10-19-2005 #2For the long answer, read this and this.
The short answer is that 'L' signifies Low carbon content in stainless alloys. These are generally preferred because they end up with less internal stress in the weld, and in the case of dissimilar metal weldments, can reduce the likelyhood of hot cracking.
Please be aware that ER308x is the prefered filler for 304 base metal.-Matt

So Matt, 2 more questions for you. What wire would you use to go 304 to 304 ss and #2 where do you find all of this information??? Thanks Chris
11-16-2005 #4Here's a stainless filler metal selection chart, but to quickly answer your question: 304-304 joint would need 308 filler.
I found the above link with a search on "stainless filler selection chart" or some such...it's been a few years. I have it, a mild steel chart, an aluminum chart, and a magnesium and titanium chart on my office wall.-Matt
