Aftermarket OBD 2 for custom late models

So , does any body make it for a late model car ? Not a re-wirer of the computer , but a computer to run the engine straight off the shelf . Is it just a factory controller thing ? Every once in a while me an other people talk about this . Are we the only ones that want this ?

OBD II Stands for On Board Diagnostics, and it's ONLY function is to monitor and make sure the the emissions equipment is working properly. Not sure why you would want to monitor this?

All the GMPP crate motor/controller harnesses have an OBDII connector that works just as if the car was a late model.

Is that what you mean?

My guess would be the benefit would be to be able to have it emission tested/inspected but have the tune-ability of an aftermarket ecu like Holley/BigStuff etc...?? Maybe?

Yes Parsons that is what I mean . Some places have smog and anything 96 an up is plug in smog for DMV only . Me an a friend wanted to put a 302 in a 98 Taurus an a 340 in a 04 300 M . I don't mind smog , if a car is running clean it is making good Hp . Cats. on a car are not a big deal .

I'm not as up on Ford as I am with GM, but I'll bet you can buy a late model engine complete with OBDII and accomplish that. Check out Ford Racing to start?

Not sure of your state requirements, but in NY, the state inspection computer is plugged into the OBD-II and not only reads any engine codes, but also scans the imbedded vin in the ECU. So, though not impossible, it makes it very difficult to do an engine swap in a '96 or newer vehicle in NY using a different computer. I believe their are companies out there capable of reprogramming the vin, but not sure who or what platforms they support.

Actually that's false, obd2 was developed as a universal diagnostics port that was to be installed through out ALL makes and models with federal epa registration.
BUT federal/carb rules were written to encompass ALL generic diag codes, protocols etc. Is all obd2 tools had to be able to connect to all cars. AND the other fact is that the codes, written rules, and stipulations mandate that as long as the light says out the car is in emissions compliance. But its not JUST for monitoring as you state.
Because all obd 1 connectors are different the obd2 connector solved this issue and the need for application specific software/hardware combo.
But at this also eliminated some model specific tests and failure codes. Thus making all aftermarket makers to step back up to licensing OEM diagnostic information and test paramaters .

Yea Monzaracer , the 302 in a Explorer has OBD 2 . But if I try to use it's computer and put it in a Taurus of any year , I fail . They say no to any heavy duty and or truck motors , even if it runs "way" cleaner . And OBD 2 tells DMV that it's a truck computer . A Taurus SHO 5.0 would be to cool .
