Mike Maier 65-66 mustang front coilover kit

I received the first production front coil over kit from Mike Maiers new company. I ordered my kit back in October before I learned of Mike opening his new company. As opposed to taking what was already on the shelf at his old company I waited it out to get his latest and greatest product. I considered other front suspension packages but with Mike's success on the auto cross circuit I had to get his kit. The youtube video big muscle featuring Mike's blue 66 had me hooked.

Here was my experience with the installation:

First the upper shock tower: The three bolt slots need to be widened at bit. The bolts were about 1/16 wider then the slots.

I little work with a grinder open the slots just enough. The top two aluminum pieces fit in perfectly. The 65-66 kit has a spacer that the 67+ kits do not require.

Under the top of the shock tower is a round bracket that is put into place.

The bolts provided need to be longer. When I put on my shock tower brace the bolts are too short.

The lower control arms need the shelby drop holes drilled into place. On the 65 its down 1" and back 1/8"

The upper control arms needed a lot of work get fit. The arrow on the upper control arms point to the front. The back part of each shock tower needed some major hammer work to create the space needed for the control arms to fit.

A fair amount of hammering and a little spray paint and the control arms fit like a glove.

(Note in the picture the control arm was on the wrong side with the arrow pointing in the rear as opposed to the front.

The coil over bolts in pretty easy. Aluminum spacers are needed to ensure a good fit.

Once the top of the coil over was bolted into place the lower control arm and spindle bolted on easy as pie.

I have noticed that Mike Maier is running 18" wheels. I was worried about the 17" wheels I am running hitting the upper control arm. I mocked up my hubs and brakes with a 1.25" spacer on wheels with 6" of back spacing.

Overall I had over 5/8" of spacing. I am going to run a 3/4 spacer to move the wheel in and away from the fender to run the car as low as possible.

Overall I am very happy with the coil over kit. I can't wait to get the car finished so I can test it out on the track.
