Holy crap! This is going to be awesome Thats one lucky race car driver. Is the widebody build inspired by the all metal dodge charger maximus?

Thanks! The nose is from cobra automotive. Mine has been heavily modified though in order to accomodate for the fact that each side of the car has been widened 40mm (1.575 inches each side) so it had to be cut and widened and then lowered/ reshaped at the front as well given big the sill drop on the car. Fortunately the original piece was high quality and very strong.

They make one for 65-66's as well.

As for the front suspension, basically the best stuff I could get from Griggs Racing.

And thanks Geoff B, unfortunately no real progress over the last few months but that ought to change soon. Will update when there is.

Extremely nice build James! That is going to be a seriously quick car! Very nicely and subtly done widening!

      1967 Mustang Fastback

These things take a lot of time for sure. I have a 65 fastback in the corner of the garage that I'm getting some ideas from you on.

wild mustang! very impressive work, and I like the wheels, they look similar to some SSR's I used to own. What are your plans as far as road registering this thing in Queensland? (i grew up in Noosa)

      Thanks Jim

Noosa is a great part of the world.

As for registration in Queensland, it is a nightmare. Tried the ICV route but no real joy (yet). I'm not giving up but it seems I will be able to run a very limited rego that would allow me to drive to/from events and within 15km of home if I'm "testing"a new part/item. It's madness. In order to race and run properly you have to have a proper cage to FIA spec's. BUT according to the geniuses at Queensland Transport as soon as you have cage structure in front of the b pillar you can't register it for road use regardless of how well constructed it is and how safe your car is. Pure bureaucratic b/s.

Anyway, I might need to join a lobby group and start agitating. Failing that, I will have a cheap fuse that keeps failing requiring regular "tests"!

Finally have some progress to report. Good and bad.

The good - Dry sump tank recess in boot and brackets done. Swirl pot for fuel. Running 2 pumps - 1 in tank, other from swirl pot and additional filter. Clutch and brake reservoir in position. Ready to run lines.

The bad- #'n Griggs Racing - someone did a hatchet job putting camber in the diff. Really shoddy. Axles don't fit properly. You can force them in but the result is awful. Would inevitably lead to huge strain/forces, the robbing of horsepower and a broken gear assembly/axle. Will need to be done properly.

      Some pic's to follow-

Thanks! It's a bit of a theme. Plan to have some consistency with the engine compartment, interior, and boot etc so it flows through the build.

Good explanation, It's something I know I'll have to look into in the future also, for now I think I'll plan to keep my camaro in the states until (if ever) things get a little easier in queensland.
I'll keep an eye on your progress. It would be too much of a shame to see a beast like this never allowed on the streets.

      Excellent work !
I hate to be that guy but I have done almost the exact same thing - '67 widened 2" per side. It really looks good on these cars and like you said people don't know why it looks so good. I've had a guy doing a concours restore of a '65 who couldn't pin down what was different. I wish it wasn't so damn much work.

Would love to see some photos of the metal work in progress. Are the tailcaps built from scratch or a modified fiberglass piece ? I ended up building my hood from scratch, how about yours ? I would say the hood was by far the most ambitious part of this, widening the doors and quarters was fairly straightforward as was the tail panel. I just pushed the fenders outboard and then worked the windshield corners, not too bad. Might of been easier to widen the fenders and use a standard hood but I don't think it would look as good.

Car looks awesome and will be fun...if they let you drive it.

      Thanks Preton! Great minds eh......

Tail caps, boot and bumper are from Ring Brothers. Have another steel boot that might end up with a wing mounted to it but that is down the track (and will be for the track only). The hood is modified but for the front the extra width was built into the fenders. The front cowl has been extended forward. A lot of time went into the rear quarters and rear valance - they are all metal. The shape at the rear I think blends nicely with the fuel cell with each side gently curving up toward the centre before levelling out. The front was made to mirror the appearance as much as possible. Running a splitter underneath the front and will likely build a removable splitter system (again for track only) that will extend much further forward but, like the rear wing idea, will wait for some proper feedback from the track.

When it's done I will do a thread dedicated to the fab work, particularly the widening process and, if people are interested, the cage. In the meantime Preston, post some pictures of your car! Would love to see it.

      Thanks
      James
