VIN tag installation

The VIN tag was removed from my son's 1969 Camaro during the restoration process, and, of course, we misplaced it. I'd been dreading the registration process, as I figured it would be greatly complicated by the missing VIN tag. Well, good news, I found it this morning. Now, what are the rules regarding re-installing the tag? It's rusty and looks a little dinged up. Can I sand and paint it? Are there special rivets/screws that need to be used? Do I need to get the State involved before I re-install (I'm in Texas)? Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

The 69 Camaro came with a pair of rosette rivets. The best thing to do is contact your local DMV for instructions and possible paperwork. I have found that each state can be different. Sometimes you have to visit a local branch and/or have the vehicle inspected. It is less painful than it sounds. Good Luck.

Bill is right must get Rosette rivets, you can sand and paint it no problem. In CA my advice is Don't contact DMV! Buy rosette rivets in Ebay and put Vin back on. You are not switching the Vin on to another car or trying to deceive anyone, unless you want the car to be re-vinned with a new non-Camaro number, don't tell DMV!

I've seen some discussions about hidden VIN numbers on a car and how they should match the one on the dash. Well, I suppose I should check. Anyone know where they hide them on a 1969 Camaro?

I think there may be a body/trim tab on the firewall and it should have a patrial of the vin. As for the secret/hidden VIN, only law enforcement and the super smart thieves will know where they are located.

There are two (2) on the '69 Camaro. One is under the the fan (for your heater) which is located on the firewall under the right fender. The fender needs to be removed to see it...a PITA. The second is easy: it is under the cowl panel on the top of the firewall and to the passenger side of the car. It might be visible thru the cowl vents...otherwise removing the wipers and the four (4) small screws is all that is required.

These won't work for a "VIN" tag (dash area). They are for the body tag ( on the firewall )
Do a google image search search for "rosette rivet for vin tag" and you will see the rivet for the "VIN" tag
