Hobart Plasma Cutter

Guys, I need to cut some sections on my 70 firebird frame in order to install the speed tech chicane coil over setup. I will probably use this plasma cutter once or twice a year. Do you think it will be sufficient for cutting a 2nd gen frame?

I've never tried the Hobart but I have an Eastwood which is very similar in that hobby range and it's been great. 2 1/2 years and no problems. Still have the same tip on it.

Is it powerful enough to cut the frame?

Hypertherm 30 or Thermal Dynamics. Can't go wrong with either one as the experts will tell you. I have the Hypertherm 30 and it will cut the frame as well as the others you listed. You may have to make more than one pass and it won't be clean but it will do it.

Fun2run if you have to make more than one pass and the cut is not clean I would say that cutter is not suited for the job. Sounds like the hypertherm 30 you reccomended is a little under powered for frame work.

I've cut 3/8 steel with mine and going slow and with the right air pressure it cuts nice. Most of the stuff I used it for is sheet metal to 1/8 plate.

how thick are the frames on our old muscle cars?

Not very thick. 1/8". Most any plasma cutter would work at a very slow speed. I watched the guy at the Miller booth cut 5/8" steel with the extreme 375. Thats when I knew I didn't need their bigger one.

BTW. It is like writing with a pencil it cuts so nice. It also means you need a very steady hand.

Did you do this mod yet? I am in process of doing the same, but I am not sure about the plasma purchase.

yes here's a video of the mod. The plasma cutter is perfect it is very powerful and works great on everything I have done.
