      Build Your Ultimate Pro-Tourng Car

Throw out the budget, pull out the magic wand and get those creative juices flowing Given unlimited resources, please describe your ultimate pro-touring car.
The Rules: (If you don't like the rules start another thread)
NOTE: This is an exercise in creativity, so please refrain from just picking a well known car that someone else built. It's too easy to just say Big Red, or Malitude, etc. Those cars reflect someone else's creativity. That would be a different thread: "What well known Pro-Touring car would you like to own?" So, for the sake of argument, pretend that your magic wand will not get you someone else's car. Let's see YOUR creativity.

This is going to be a cool thread. this is just the kind of thing a car builder like me can get ideas from. I would tell you my idea, but I plan to build it and want to hold my cards close to my chest, at least unitl I get started.

For the record, I do think the all wheel drive Riviera is near the top of the list. let's do this thing!

Oh okay, let's "build" that Rivi on paper.

-Platform: 1965 Buick Riviera. If you're gonna go "Touring" (i.e. Power Tour), I believe the platform should have a spacious interior and trunk. In that respect, an A body or similar is a better platform than an F-body or Mustang.

-Front Suspension: 2004 Cadillac SRX with custom chassis

-Rear Suspension: 2004 Cadillac SRX IRS with custom chassis. Back half of chassis would be raised to compensate for tall tires.

-Wheels/Tires 18"/20" with ample sidewalls. wheels would be Budnik Inverter FL or Muroc II FL since these wheels hint at the original beauty wheels but are totally custom.

-Engine: Blown Northstar V8. Bone stock--right down to the exhaust manifolds. Should fill the engine compartment nicely and clear the stock hood.

-Drivetrain: 6L80E six speed electronic auto overdrive with paddle shift (of course)

-Body: Refurbish existing color combo: Black with black vinyl top and lots of chrome. Custom cast emblems proclaiming the project name (Which I will keep secret until the car is debuted)

-Cockpit. Reconstruct late model seats with moderate bolsters, heat and memory. One-off retro steering wheel with integral paddle shifter. The stock column, dash and console are works of art on these cars. They need to be maintained dash and console would be upgraged with modern "black" woodgrain from a current high end luxury car. Integrate late model seat belts front and rear.

      -Special Features
Pod of small HID headlights hidden behind stock "clamshell" doors. Hidden flip down NAV system. Custom "Redline" striped radials. Integrated, hidden radar.

      That's it. (That's plenty)

P.S. If anyone wants to fund this monumental project, I'll sign over my Rivi for $10K, plus retain the rights to manage the project--start to finish. I build it my way, you get the car on completion AFTER a tour of duty.

62' nova(which is in the corner of the shop)

      full frame
      C5 front suspension
      3 link rear w/9in
      Single turbo 427 LS1
      6spd auto
      19' 20' DPengineering 3 piece wheels
      15' and 14'in brakes

and I guess it is the poser coming out in me but it would have to be on shockwaves sitting on the ground!

      Let's go NASCAR ricer:

Early 80's/late 70's Malibu as platform.

Narrow front and rear frame rails and put in custom-built SLA front suspension. Rear is 3 link, based on floating axle setup.

Channel body over frame 3 inches, put in tasteful cage with halo bar for extra head room.

Engine is SB2, but using EFI. Small dual or triple disc clutch, TK0-600 5 speed.

Carbon fiber everywhere: hood, bumpers, front and rear wings, seats, dash insert, gauges, and custom design touches. No chrome. Everything fastens with Dzus fasteners.

Body is silver, wheels are anodized clear: no shine, but grayish/silverish in color. Basic 5 spoke design.

Brakes are massive Wilwoods with fluid re-circulators.

      Okay here goes.

I would do a total build on my current 69 firebird

Front Susp: Wayne Due AM front subframe complete with QA-1 coilovers, rack&pinion, art morrison suspension.

Rear Susp: Wayne Due C4 IRS with DSE mini-tubs (shortened halfshafts to allow for less wheel backspacing)

Wheels/Tires: Fikse FM10's 18x9.5ront with 295 section width rubber, 18x12 rear with 335 section width rubber.

Engine: Indian adventures II aluminum block with Tiger heads, journaled down to accept BBC 6.8" rod, fully balanced rotating assembly. Mass Flo EFI system utilizing Torker II intake manifold. Single turbo setup with air/air intercooler (GT47/T88 something in that range).

Drivetrain: Geforce modified T-56 with custom gearing (no overdrive). Carbon driveshat. 3.73 final drive ratio.

      Paint: Two tone black/cherry

Cockpit: Stock dash painted in black cherry with modified consoul to accept multiple driver facing guages. 6 point cage, Carbeau racing seats front rear seat delete.

Body: Fiberglass 1969 TA hood with custom louvers on the snorkles, fiberglass trunk lid with camaro style spoiler. Camaro style front spoiler. Custom sub-frames to tie in front and rear subs and rocker structure, half height solid body mounts.

Brakes: Wilwood 4 pistons with hydratech master cylinder

That would be pretty much it. I would likely do a plastic road race fuel cell with custom fuel system utilizing stainless lines with AN fittings and aeromotive a1000 pumps. Dual batteries relocated to the trunk with diamond plate encosure over the batteries and tank.

      OK, Here goes:

      Platform: '89 IROC

Front suspension/rear suspension: full on Global West road racing setup with slightly less stiff front springs, Koni double adjustable shocks, AGR quick steering box and pump, Wilwood 13", 6 pot front brakes and 12", 4 pot rear brakes

      Wheels/tires: 17" Fikse FM-5s, Michelin Pilot Sports 235/40 fronts, 275/45 rears

Engine: Open topic for now. I want as much torque and hp as will pass CA emissions and be reasonably street driveable

Drivetrain: Built 700r-4, Gear Vendors over/underdrive (Steve C; is there a way I could use a Shrifter here or would I need to switch to a computer controlled transmission. If I did, would that be overkill?) Ford 9" posi rear end; ratio another open topic

      Body color: Red; stock graphics

Cockpit: Recaro or SPARCO seats, 6 or 8 point cage, harness, back seat removed, big Autometer tach to the right of the instrument cluster

Special features: dirty undercarriage and high mileage; this car is to be driven. To bust the butts of some friends of mine, a placard on the passenger side dash that says: "Notice: This car is faster than anything the Freeman brothers own!"

Basically what I am doing now, I like the looks/style of my car...but with a big budget I would go EFI/bigger motor/more boost, 6 speed trans, bigger wheels, tubular a-arms and maybe shockwaves.

Maybe not radical enough for what Steevo is looking for as an answer......??
(just try to do it in my style with my budget, so the style would not really change, just the quality/finish/price of the parts)

An idea just for this thread since I intend to build a few others I have.

      1959 Elcamino

Feel of the car would be somewhat multi era / road warrior / road course warrior / kill small children.

      Exterior color

Graphite metallic (almost black) with lightly tinted windows

Custom carbon fiber bed cover with small wing for down force on shocks to expose goodies underneath

Custom chin spoiler complete with all proper air ducts for brakes and mesh inner head lights for induction

All chrome re done to resemble more of a "black chrome"

Satin lip wheels with matching centers

Either Wide 5 mount or a stock car inspired wheel

Tube chassis with cage, all body panels quick release

Custom long arm short arm front suspension and traditional NASCAR type 9" rear suspension

      Brakes
One off to match car depending on wheel choice

      Engine
Intercooled Twin turbo small inch high rev SB2 with a 6 speed and a little bit of meth

      Interior
No frills, minimum gauges, black in color along with some sheetmetal and carbon fiber.

And a killer stance of course

You need an electronic trans. Substitute 4L60E for 700R4. And you need GV's new digital sequencer to keep hands on the wheel at all times 8 speeds overkill? Probably, but you can only use 5 or 6 at a time if you'd like.

Martin: It's your magic wand, so build it your way. My crazy Riviera project makes sense to me because I already have a "done" Camaro.

      -Platform-65 GTO convertible
      -Front Suspension-Global West,Wilwood
      -Rear Suspension-Global West, Wilwood
      -Wheels/Tires-Forgeline, Pirelli
      -Engine-LSx with magnacharger
-Drivetrain-4L80 with shrifter paddle shift, 9"ford rearend
-Body Color-two tone, red over silver
-Cockpit-updated, modern seats with 65 style stitching
-Special Features-full custom dash, special gauges. Car is a touring car so must have creature comforts like electric windows, A/C. Basically a modern car built around a older body.

Needless to say, I have had to chance to build my dream car this year. Even now, that it is almost finished, I don't think there is much I would do different even with an unlimited budget.

BTW, I have added this picture because the car has changed a bunch since it was taken, the stance is much lower now and of course, many more parts added.

Here's our current house project, some details subject to change:

Platform: 1970 Camaro RS, with body modifications (subtle, TBD at this point). Two different easily replaceable body themes: one for street/cruising which will have a tasteful, small front spoiler (custom), and will utilize the short one piece trunk lid spoiler. second is track setup with full aero, deep front spoiler/splitter with small dive planes, full carbon wing on rear, fully adjustable for height and trim. Custom radiator outlet ducting, brake venting. Color: dark, and sinister, probably ghost flamed.

Suspension: Full Lateral Dynamics road race setup. Three link rear suspension with Watt's linkage, 9" Ford with aluminum carrier, Penske triple adjustable shocks, Eibach springs. Full LD front subframe, fully braced (available early 2006), Chro-Mo tubular control arms, adjustable stabilizer bar, Penske triple adjustable shocks and Eibach springs.

Brakes: Big, most likey AP Racing 14"/13" six/four pot. No cross drilling. Bias bar front-rear, cockpit adjustable. Porterfield pads.

Engine and Trans: (Current plan) Donovan based Big Block Chevy, 4.5" bore, short stroke. Anticipated redline well north of 7500 RPM. Injected. Possibly dry-sump, most likely wet sump with fully baffled custom road race oil pan. Transmission is not set yet, but first choice is Hewland sequential shift five speed, second is Jericho road race five speed, long range cruising trans will likely be Tremec.

Interior: Cobra Seats (Street = Misano, Track = Suzuka) with matching back seat, full DOM cage with removable side and back braces. Hand fabricated aluminum dash, A/C. Stereo with Morel speakers, Zapco amps.

Wheels/Tires: Kinesis forged wheels, 315/335 tire stagger.

Current progress: Body stripped and on rostisserie, cage installed, mini-tubbed, new qtrs, trunk floor, rear light panel installed. Three link being fabricated. Anticipated completion: Before Power Tour 2006!

I like this thread. "net" racing is all I do.... It would have carbon fiber/NASCAR/Road Race look.

-Front Suspension-Mustang II - coil overs and cobra brakes
-Rear Suspension-Cobra IRS - coil overs and cobra brakes
-Wheels/Tires-17x11, 17x9 HRE843R (polished lip, black or dark grey inside color), 315/35/17 and 275/40/17
-Engine-FORD GT 5.4 with a Kenne Bell 2.2L blower with Stand-alone EFI or the new 3 valve 4.6 Mustang GT motor with said Kenne Bell blower
      -Drivetrain-CF driveshaft, w/4.30's
-Body Mods-Carbon Fiber NASCAR style rear spoiler, carbon fiber front splitter (road race style with the attaching aluminum rods), Carbon fiber trunk and hood
-Body Color-Either black (just like my dad's or a dark silver or white)
-Cockpit-Black cage, Red corbeau seats, red/black interior panels (like the new '05 Mustang red interior)

Nice, that would be a cool project. I'd probably change up the engine a bit though.

I'd do a VT Competition Engineering 324" stroker based off the aluminum 4.6L mountain block. I'd top it with a set of slightly worked over 03/04 Cobra heads and JDM Engineering Stage 3 crower cams. I'd go with the 2.4 KB instead of the 2.2 as well. I'd also do the Horsepower by Herman blower spacer to unshroud the intercooler and lower charge temps.

That would be a kickin combo for quite a bit less money. This is however not an issue in this thread, so 5.4 GT motor it is!

Here is my contribution... it is much like the project I am currently working on... except that I'm sure I'll have to make compromises with mine due to funds.

      -Platform

Datsun 240-Z with custom tubular titanium spaceframe chassis. Floor panels will also be titanium sheeting.

      -Front Suspension

Unequal length A-arm with coilover shock. Adjustible front swaybar with adjustment on the fly from the cockpit. Big disk brakes.

      -Rear Suspension

If I could afford it... and design it well, I'd probably go with an IRS setup with unequal length A-arms and four forward links. Inboard mounted disk brakes of course.

      -Wheels/Tires

18'' wheels with 335 rubber out back and 295 rubber up front.

      -Engine

Strokes LS2 with custom fabbed 32 valve heads, force fed by an intercooled twin turbo setup.

      -Drivetrain

Sequential shift transaxle out back geared for 200+mph.

      -Body Color

Silver with single wide black stripe down the center.

      -Cockpit

Minimalist, easy to read controls, comfortable but spartan.

      -Special Features

Can drive to the grocery store, then hit the open road race and top 200mph!
      John
