      Naming a project?

It seems to be increasingly common that peoples project cars have names. (II Much, Illusion, Sick Fish, Thrasher, Mule, etc etc)

Where did this come from? Is there a purpose? How does one come up with a name for a project?

guys have been naming their cars, bikes, planes, boats.... since the beginning of transportation history. Especially the racing crowd.

I suppose this isn't any different.

Having a project name that is well-known is easier to use when tallking about specific cars. We could say "Mule", or we could keep saying "That silver 1969 Camaro with Fikses and twin-turbos that Stielow built". Those in the know hear "Mule" and instantly know what you are talking about.

pick a name that describes the character or style of your car.

There was actually a really long thread about this very subject a while back. You can check it out if you'd like:

      https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4752

The cliff notes version of why I chose Retribution for mine was actually fairly simple. My first car was a 93 T/A and it was pretty peppy. Not fast by any means, but quick (mid-12 sec daily driver). Well when I sold that car, I went through a really bad year and a half period (roughly) where I didn't have ANY car that ran worth a damn (mostly due to a failed 96 Impala SS project that never went anywhere). So I always used to catch a ton of grief from my buddies in the local F-Body club that I belong to about never having a running car and always having to catch rides from people or having to use the "Nike Express". :bsjerk:

So, upon the purchase of my 67 SS and figuring out what I wanted to do with it during the planning stages, I pretty much told myself that I was going to build this car to not only make me happy, but also to allow me to come back and stick it to those same people that enjoyed all the good natured ribbing they dished out.

I think that reasoning fits pretty well with the definition:

      1) Something justly deserved; recompense.
      2) Something given or demanded in repayment, especially punishment.

heh, my non-musclecar friends are all into VWs; GTIs mainly. They thought the naming process for projects was hilarious, so they both named their projects.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't help being reminded of the lifted 4x4s with names like "Thunder" painted across the tailgate.

Although.....I kinda like "Switchblade" dunno why...sounds cool though huh?

I think the name should have a theme and have multiple meanings, like mine:

named mine a long time ago, i was driving from Lubbock to Austin and was somewhere between Abiline and Brady jamming out to Metallica's kill 'em all album, the song was Phantom Lord, when all of sudden i had the living crap scared outta me, i looked up and saw an F-4 Phantom doing maneuvers and he gave me a couple of fly-bys and i was sitting on the top of the door giving him the old evil horns and he gave me wing wave and took off on the afterburners. when i got to austin i called my best friend up and told him the story and he actually named the car then and there.

      Project Phantom Lord.

that also kinda goes with the theme of the car, which will look like what ford might have made if they had built a 69 CALIFORNIA SPECIAL, which is typically called a phantom car when you build a version of a car that was never built. also kind of goes with the sleeper theme of the rest of the car

Can't help with the naming deal, ours are pretty simple (Lateral 1, Lateral 2), but I will say, True, BUILD THAT BABY!!!!!!! That is one super cool looking car, the stance is "right," the cage and window net let people know you mean business. Perfect.

(Not to mention I love blue and black cars...).

      Yeah baby.

Yeah, Tony totally read my mind when he did that illustration. Though I think I still want the 17" version of the mini-lite wheels for a bit of the retro thing. I have yet to find a forged wheel that dosen't look too "modern" for my taste.

I am more excited and commited than ever on this car. I have been talking off-line with a bunch of members of this site concerning various portions of the car. The plan is starting to gel and I'm begining to be able to visualize the various milestones that I will need to meet along the way.

I can't say thanks enough to the people on this site for the experience and insight that has been leant toward this end.

Sik boy was one of my options as well (dig the avatar & future fender tatoo). But adding " _____-boy " is somewhat ubiqutous among the ricer crowd out here. Probably not in your neck-o-the-woods though.

To be honest, I'm not serious at all about the name thing. Though something may pop up along the way.
