      engine assembly

OK, my coupe is in paint and don't expect it back for another month or two. During this downtime I've collected my engine parts; AFR165, XE268 hyd tappet, roller rockers, etc. The motor ('68 302, .030+) is recently rebuilt so this will be a bolt-on scenario. Once the coupe gets back I still need to install the new wiring, so I don't expect to have this motor installed, started and broken in and running for another 2-3 mos, possibly as long as 4-5 mos. I want to take this downtime to fully assemble the motor. Will this long wait period be detrimental to breaking in the camshaft? Everything will be lubed up, but no break-in oil until I drop it in car with the tranny and get ready to start it.

Are you putting moly on the cam lobes & lifter bottoms?

The amount of time the motor sits for wont be a serious problem. As long as you use the proper pre-assy lube on the cam lobes and assemble everything correctly. With a light coating of oil on the internals and sealing the engine up moisture shouldn't be a problem either. The most important things are using the proper break in oil with the proper additives and also pressurize the oiling system prior to start up.

thank you. We're entering spring summer. gonna be 90 today. Its nothing to see 100+ in the garage during the summer, but luckily its a "dry heat" I'm more worried about the lube thinning and running to the bottom of the engine than anything else. Sounds like I've got a plan, and proper lubes to do the work. Thanks much.

Back off the rockers so there is no tension on the valve springs, mystery oil in the cylinders, cap the intake and exhaust.
when it comes time to run it re-adjust the valves, remove the spark plugs and bar the engine over to get any excess mystery oil out.
pre-lube the engine, fire it up and follow the camshaft manafacturers recomendations for cam break in. I guess after that you get to enjoy...
