Is Epoxy Primer still cool these days?
---
Several times in the last couple years I have been steered away from buying epoxy primer for a situation that seemed suited for it. The guys at the paint/body stores seem to be increasingly turning against the stuff for anything related to an old-car project at all.
The other day I went into a paint/body store to buy some EP for coating the inside of a subframe rail. After talking with the guy at the counter about paints & primers for a while I came out with SEM's EZ-Coat aerosol can for the job.
When it comes to the shiny side of the body, they are pushing to start with a metal etching primer and go directly to a higher build primer on top of that, no EP anywhere.
I was raised in the Church of Epoxy Primer. Taught to view it as a spray-on substitute for a modern car's E-coat layer over the bare metal. Primer sticks to it well, the epoxy part makes it cure very strong & well sealed, etc.
What gives? Any feedback from the bodywork pros here?
