      Setting vent window glass

      Hey guys
I need to install new vent glass into their chrome frames and was wondering on the best method. I've done a search a found a couple of guys recommending RTV over setting tape. I've never used setting tape so I don't know how easy or difficult the process is. The RTV sounds simple enough but when I test fit the new glass I find there to be a lot of side to side play. If I used the RTV would I try to center the glass in the frame while the sealant cures or push the glass closer to the interior or exterior side??

      Thanks
      Ken

The tape (or sometimes rubber) serves as a shim to alleviate the movement you are experiencing.

I used clear silicone on mine with very good success. Gives you ability to get the glass right were you want it and let set up.

It seems like the RTV may be the way to go. Thanks

I got some setting mateial from a local automotive glass shop to set the glass into the frames on my 57 Chev. It comes in several different thicknesses. You coat the material on both sides with a film of oil which helps with the installation. As the material soaks up the oil, it swells. The extra material is then trimmed of with a razor blade. I was told this was the way the factory did it back in the day.

I used the setting tape. RTV is nothing but a dirt magnet in my experience and will likely look bad over time.
