      X-Pipe Design

I'm going to have some exhaust work done on my '67 Camaro before the Spring and will be switching from my H-Pipe to an X-Pipe setup. It's a 2 1/2" system with Magnaflow mufflers. Everything forward of the mufflers will be replaced including headers.

What are you're opinions on these two different designs from Magnaflow? Is there really any advantage of one style over the other?

IMO opinion the crossovers have to much restriction. The top one gets my vote because it keeps the 2 pipes more separate while also not giving up any of their individual diameters.

I think the top pipe might work better for my application. Also, Magnaflow sells it as part of a kit with mandrel bends.

Now I have to decide on a 2.5" vs 3" system.

We just put a PYPES system on one in the shop right now, but we won't get to hear it run for a while yet. Install didn't go to bad!

I am thinking about adding a set of exhaust cutouts to this system just for the fun factor. And while the Pypes system already has the provision for it, it might not put them in the ideal location for my setup.

      Here's the 2 1/2" Pypes system:

Here's the Magnaflow 2 1/2" system I'm strongly considering. If I add a set of dumps, I would do a Y-pipe just before the mufflers. I'm looking at the Doug's electric cutouts since they are the gate style and do not seem to leak like a lot of the butterfly systems:

Pypes is good stuff in my experience. The price also can't be beat.

I ordered the 2 1/2" Magnaflow X-Pipe system I pictured above from Summit. I don't think I'm going to bother with cutouts at this point. I've been trying to resolve some annoying exhaust leaks and this just seems like adding fuel to the fire.

I'm waiting on a new Driveshaft to be built and a couple of other small suspension pieces to arrive so I can button everything up and send it off to the exhaust shop (probably 2-3 weeks out on that). I'll post up some pics once it's done. I did an exhaust clip last fall with the H-Pipe, so I may do a comparison sound clip with the X and post it up as well.

You will notice a sound tone difference when going from H to X-pipe. I got one of the stamped style ones, but the exhaust shop 11 years ago was too lazy to put it on. Did his version of an h-pipe, which had pretty crappy torch cut inside openings. Swapped in the x myself. Think you'll find the sound more throaty.
If you want to spend a little less on cutouts later, you could do like me & oval shape the end of a 3 to 4" pipe & fishmouth it in right at the end of one of the x- pipe ends, turning the outlet basically into one large Y exit & of course requiring only 1 cutout. Adding a little length of pipe after the cutout & making it a side exit will improve the sound quality.

Since Nascar uses x-pipes, it's a proven fact it makes more power;;;; at least on a left turn.

I got the new Magnaflow X-Pipe installed today. They welded a set of flanges to the back of the collector and to the front of the intermediate pipes. All the seams are welded. They did a decent job, but I'm not sure I would have been so liberal with the BLACK spray paint on all the seams. I'll probably hit it with some ceramic silver header paint to blend in a little better, but at least they didn't leave the welds to rust.

It sounds great, and better yet, no exhaust leaks! I'll do a video comparing it to the old H-Pipes in a few days. But from inside the car, you can't really tell much of a difference between the X and H pipes (other than the exhaust leaks are gone).

Thanks, but I already had my X-Pipe installed two days ago (see pic above your post). And the link you provided with the "best design" actually has 3 different designs. Which did you think was best?

the design that fits the car/exhaust you are working on. haha. i was talking more about the intersection. they can make them parallel entry and exit or what ever variation works best for the application. burns usually charges in the $400 range last time i checked for that type of X section, so the price is pretty darn good for a hand made piece.
i have used alot of their parallel X pipes and work great in tight spaces.
i only say "best design" as i used them in my own custom exhausts i marketed for awhile and they blew all my competition out of the water on stock car, bolt on exhaust only dyno tests. consistently 7-10rwhp over other designed systems on stock car.
i personally feel the angle of entry/exit and the middle cross section dia to be the key.
