Yes low pressure side...and I would think that a power steering cooler might be overkill if the car is just a driver . I could very well be wrong though too.

The PS cooler goes in the low pressure side. We use them on all our PT cars even if they're a street car. When sawing at the wheel at the occasional auto-x, a cooler really helps.

If you have a fast ratio steering box, you need a cooler. The factory cooled them with a loop of steel line running over & back, just above the sway bar.

yup, i know 3rd gens did. I modified one to use in my 77. I also used a magnafine filter that i suspect might have some cooling effect as well. I think i got the filter idea from mr pozzi but my memory is sketchy lol

I ran the Magnafine filter on Mary's car. It won't work well with braided hose though, the braid won't expand enough to insert the filter nipple. Lee sells a nice inline filter with -6 hose ends. EVERY PS system needs a filter, ESPECIALLY a Rack & Pinion!

Wow, I have never even thought about needing a power steering filter. I wonder if a magnet in the reservoir would be effective enough?

I run a power steering cooler with its own 8 inch cooling fan and a magnafine power steering filter, I use a AGR 12.1 steering box and a re-valved corvette power steering pump

The GM steering boxes get by without them from the factory but way back when there used to be an internal filter inside the pump on some round necked GM pumps. On rack and pinion systems I've seen the rack boost fail due to a sticking flow control valve, probably due to metal shavings in the fluid. Adding a filter seems to have fixed it.

Can I just use normal "push lock" hose on the return side? I know it will handle the pressure, but will it be compatible with the fluid? The recommended hose is PTFE, but I was going to add a small filter with barbed ends and I am trying to keep things simple.

Yes, push lok is fine for the return side.

Ok thanks - push lok it is. Do you know what temp is too hot for power steering fluid? I'm guessing as long as it is above freezing it can't be too cold (?)

A note on if you need a cooler. Years ago when I regularly autocrossed the 79 Camaro C/P 10" slicks IROC steering box I bought a Dorman "Help" line PS cap melted after a few runs. A GM one did fine but these things do make some heat.
