      LS help

I am thinking of doing a LS swap in my 73 Camaro and don't know what LS to go with. Is there any motors to stay away from?

      LS help

All the Ls based motors are basically the same. There all great motors, make great power with minimal mods. The truck motors are known to handle up to 800 horse when boosted on stock bottom end and the truck motors are cheap.

      LS help

I guess the only motors I could tell u to stay away from is D.O.D. Motors. They cause a lot of problems but if you do buy one, get rid of all that crap before you run it. They tend to burn oil and kill lifters.

If you go with an aluminum block LS1,2,3 they're pretty strait forward and very similar.
If you go with an iron block truck motor, yes, there are issues with like Castech heads, 99 & 00 long crank, VVT, DOD, adjustable pedal, etc. Some other issues will depend on what features you want or how you'll be using it.

I agree with all above. I think you will be pleased with either choice. The aluminum engine a bit lighter and as a result a cool factor exists. My 2001 ls6 has the well known cold start piston slap. It's only an annoyance and goes away when warm. I have read 2001 and older aluminum (and even some iron) ls blocks are prone to this, just something to keep in mind but shouldn't be a deal breaker as many motors have it. The iron block has displacement advantage and nice heads on it and is probably more capable out of the box it terms of power. Some say the iron block is more abuse friendly, especially for forced induction. I think either block would stand up to big time abuse for the majority of us. Ls1tech is your friend on all things LS and a search there can yield all sorts of helpful insight. These motors are so much fun you will be happy with either. Enjoy. Once you go LS you'll be hooked.

Look out for the I believe 99-00 lq4's. They have a longer crank and will only bolt up to a 4l80 (and maybe a turbo 400...).
