      67 Camaro RS build

      Back in January I picked up a 67 Camaro RS. It was a rolling shell, body was in good shape, no engine, basically just the body on wheels. I have all the glass and chrome, But that's about it.My plan for the car is going to redo it. I am less interested in being totally original as I am in being for me. So I am going to build it up to be an SS/RS clone. I want it to be a cruiser, but I want don't want it to be afraid to go on the track. The goal is to update a lot of the car. That includes:

      1. 4 Link rear suspension
      2. Coil Over Springs
      3. Updated steering
      4. 383 Stroker Engine
      5. 4 or 5 Speed Transmission ( I'm still deciding what I'm gonna go with, but I'm leaning towards the 5 speed)
      6. Slightly Lowered Stance
      7. New Control Arms and other steering components.


      Right now I have the car torn apart and sitting on a rolling dolly ( When I took the rear axle off, I found out that it didn't have rear drums on the brakes. The pads were there, but the outer drums weren't.)



      Now I am 23 years old and this is my first major build, so I'm going to have some questions for the people on this board as I make decisions on what routes I decide to go with different parts of the car.

      The first real question I have is about Steering systems. What are the pros and cons of a steering box vs. a rack and pinion system. I am not sure which one to go with since I don't know much about them and none of my friend seem to know either, so any information you guys have on how they work and which is better would be great.

      I don't know what info you guys need so feel free to ask questions.

      The car and build plan that you are doing is a fairly common build. In fact, I am building one There's tons of information out there already on these, so learn to use the search feature on the sites.

      As for the steering, I'd recommend sticking with a box if keeping the original frame. The 600 series boxes are the best you can get. They offer a steering rack feel without all the hassle of setting up a rack. If you are going to an aftermarket frame, then they usually are setup for using a rack, so use that.

      my dad put rack + pinion in his 67 rs, mounts up where the control arms bolt on. makes it feel a lot stiffer like newer sports cars and much more responsive. I have a gear in my 73 chevelle and it steers REALLY easy, almost no effort, not really the feel you want from a street/strip car.
