As you putting drag tires on it? How is it built now? A well built 8.5 can take it.

I have ran my 500hp LSx on drag radials with the 8.5 10 bolt just fine. I'm using Moser 30 spline axles and welded the housing though.

I agree with the above posts. If the 10 bolt was built correctly you should have no problems at that power level.

FWIW the factory 28 spline axles have been holding up to slicks and 10.90s in my TA with roughly 550 hp. Does have an Eaton posi. When it gets freshened will get 30 spline axles.

I'd bet you would be fine with no stickies. The other things like welding the tubes,30 splines and girdle all add some support there.

I have basically the same build as this ^ and so do LOTS of Buick Grand Nationals running in the 9's. Stock 8.5" 10-bolt with 28 splines will handle any street tires even at the strip, going to slicks with more than 400hp just go 30 splines and forget about it.

With all the truck 8.5" housings out there don't know why folks don't lop pff the ends and weld some new non C clip ends on and some leaf spring perches.

If the axles in it look at all worn time to upgrade to 30 splines.

Its a lot work that's why. If you are going to modify a 10 bolt that much and get custom axles, you might as well just buy a new Moser. The upgrades I did to my rear were to improve what I had and that was close in $$ to a new rear. If I went that one step further, it would not have been economical and I would have an inferior product in the end. If the OP is going to get serious about the rearend, buy a 9" or a Moser 12 bolt.

i built up a 10 bolt with 3.90 gears, auburn posi, support cover, and braces, it lasted for years behind my 500hp 455 with slicks with 28 spline axles, when i changed out to my 470 that was a little over 600 hp and 650 lb ft of torque it lasted about a month. i did a few hard launched at the strip and the axle splines twisted something awful i had to use a lot of force to get them disenguaged from the carrier, went to a 9 inch after that and never looked back

I agree you can sink some money in a 10 bolt but they end up as strong as a 12 bolt. 10 larger bolts for the ring gear some size pinion, same axle bearings , axles are the only thing weaker if using s 28 spline. And I ended up with as much freshening a 12 bolt as a new Moser and the new housings are stronger, but that way you can buy one piece at a time.
Some guys running 10 bolts well in the 9s. 33 spline axles and spools available.

Just tossed out the truck rear for those guys with access and good at welding.

Size: 229.3 KBI would use a 8.5 Corporate ten bolt out 1973-9 Nova. They bolt right in. 8.5s are very strong ,and easier to find. I have one in my 1979 Z-28 RS Camaro Pro-touring car. It has a 364 Cubic inch 500 HP plus Supercharged Small Block Chevy .With a Super T-10 four speed.I upgraded mine with Moroso "Brute Strength' Center section, New Chevy 3:42 gears, and Moser 30 spline axles. And I never have had a problem.
