Wheel choices for my '70 Mach1

Well, I've been debating my wheel choices again. I'd decided on 17" '03-'04 Ford Mach1 wheels because I found them very very very attractive. But now I'm second guessing myself since they'll require me to run 1" spacers. I'm not super fond of the idea of running such wide spacers on a car I intend to drive pretty hard, plus the extra $140 sorta kills the cost/benefit ratio on the wheels. So what to do?

Well, I've been doing photochops for everyone else lately, so I thought I'd do some for myself. These are all 17"x8" and are in my general budget range, though I'm on a pretty tight budget since I'm a doctoral student. Whatch'all think?

Coys Edelbrock 454 copies, $200 each:

Saltflats (painted inside) - $220 each:

      '03-'04 Ford Mach1s - $120 each:

      Hotwheels Sixty-Eights (painted inside) - $150 each:

I was just messing around and found another option. I'd had black wheels on the car since '90 (AR-767s), but eventually decided I wanted something more glitzy when doing this build. Anyway, I was looking at the Hotwheels Revolutions (also 17x8) and thought they looked ok but not quite right, so I tried blacking them out. I think I like 'em... and they're only $100 each:

The black wheels look excellent, and at $100 each are a great deal! How is the weight of the wheels?

I think I like the salt flats the best. Second would be the 454's as those are always a good look on a Mustang.

in order of what i like

      1 salt flats
      2 black hot wheels
      3 454 copies

i like the 454's a lot, but they are getting overdone on stags now, don't see many salt flats on them yet, i don't like the solid polished salt flats but rather the gray centers like you posted. you can also get the hot wheels 68's in black and they have another 5 spoke that looks really good with black centers. a friend has them on his saturn and they look really good.
Do you have a 69 or 70 stang? If so then check out www.69STANG.com

I see I'm not the only one that likes all of these.

I got up this morning and wasn't feeling as fond of the black wheels, but they do look pretty good and sure are cheap. As for weight, I suspect all of these wheels are on the heavy side. Since this is going to be a daily driven street car, I want a good durable street wheel that isn't gonna bend on the first bad pothole, so heavy wheels are probably a better choice in general.

I agree about the 454s... The more I look at them, they look too busy for the look I want. They've sure got that race inspired look, but I really want a more street oriented look. I get the same feeling about the Saltflats a bit too.

Oh, and I like the black Sixty-Eights on compact cars, but I tried 'em on the photochop and they just didn't do much for me. I do think I like classic 5 spoke designs though, which is ultimately why I seem to just keep coming back to the Machs. I love the machined aluminum finish, and since they're OEM, I know they're durable and easily replaceable (if I curb the crap out one). But at the same time, I can get most of the same look with the Sixty-Eights and get proper backspacing to boot. Decisions, decisions.

      Other thoughts?

Add another vote for the 454s. I've seen that style of wheel in 17" on a 17 Mustang and it looked great,

Coys Edelbrock if you want something different.

My personal choice is the 03-04 Mach's. It gives it that modern day look while still keeping the characteristic of the car the same.

I've been debating bigtime on what I want for wheels too. From your selection I like the Coys.

One thing to think about is what you will do with the car. If its going to be a showy kind of car anywheel will do, but if you are going to race you will want to get the lightest wheel possible. You will be amazed at what reducing unsprung reciprocating weight will do. The car will have an easier time stopping and accelerating. Recently I upgraded my brakes to larger but lighter rotors. Even though the rotors were only 10lbs different each I could feel the difference when I would launch the car. It felt like it actually gained 20-30hp.

The wheels that I'm thinking about are from www.Bogartracingwheels.com welded. Talked to a guy and they can make most wheels from 13-17"dia by 3-15"wide with any reasonable backspace. I want the RoadRace RT welded in 17x9.5 which he said only weighed 15lbs! If I was to only do drag racing they have a similar wheel that's 9~10lbs! BUT, they do cost $460 each

For some crazy reason I think they are worth it.

It's funny that this wheel has yet to really catch on for vintage Mustangs. The more I look at it, the more I like it. I actually almost can't believe that I still debate this since I actually won a set on eBay in early '03, but the guy got a better offer locally and sold 'em out from under me. Heck, I'd already mailed the guy a check and had to put stop on it. Subsequently, I've just put buying a set on a back burner since the car still needed a bunch of other stuff. Soon though...
