Help ID rearend
I have a 67 GTO and this rear end does not have the stamp code on the axle tube. However it does have some numbers on the housing. I am assuming it is a 10 bolt based off of the cover but i dont want to assume.
As you can see it says 12 over the serial number so i dont know if that is saying it is a 12 bolt or not. I dont know how to look up the info off of the serial number alone.

Can you pull the cover & count the ring gear bolts?

Normally i would say yes but i just packed my garage up in preparation for my deployment and it is not very close to the front lol if it comes down to that being the only way i will try to make time to do it.

I believe there were some Buick-Olds-Pontiac rear ends that have 12-bolt on the ring gear carrier & a 10-bolt cover. You'll need to pull the cover to know for sure.

Looks like a 8.2 10 bolt to me. WHich should be what was stock in a 67 GTO.

It is a 10 bolt...all 10 bolts have 1 bolt dead center at the bottom of the cover, 12 bolts have 2 bolts at the very bottom of the cover and they are in line with each other, also if you take some sand paper or wire wheel to the back side of the right or passenger side axle tube you will find the original GM stamped numbers with you can then decode and it will tell you yr..type...model etc.

Some of the tube stamping letters were pretty shallow and with surface rust/grime disappear over the years.
8.2 is not a real stout rear. Posis not a lot of choices. Gears not as strong as others.
Best bolt in is a slightly later 8.5 10 bolt out of a Buick or Olds about 72. Bolt in axles 8.5 posis and gears.1978 Black Trans Am 455 Edelbrock heads [email protected] through mufflers on pump gas

I plan on getting a ford 9 inch or a 12 bolt in the future i just wanted to make sure this was not a 12 bolt. I already wire brushed the axle tubes and nothing showed up. I was pretty sure it was the basic 8.2 10 bolt but like mentioned above i have heard the the cover was not always a correct way to base it off of.

FYI the cover does give it away as previously mentioned....but too many people count the cover bolts and think thats the correct way...it's not..bolt count is the amount of bolt which hold the ring gear to the carrier
