Hey guys, I have not been on in a while mainly because I have been broke from paying for two years of my sons college(that was the promise I made him). Anyway, I have come into a little bit of money, and I am going to change some things on my 69' Goat. This thing is not much more than my weekend warrior, and I have already decided on Vari-Shocks for it. I am currently running Global West tubular suspension on it. It has been lowered 1.5" in the front(spring choice), and 1" in the rear(spring choice). I am wanting to upgrade the brakes, so some suggestions there would be helpful. It is a factory disc brake car, and I am looking at running either 17", or 18" wheels. I am also wanting to swap rear ends, but I am having a hard time deciding on a 9", or a 12 bolt. Any suggestions there will be helpful as well. I want to ditch my current dash, with stock gauges for something that is more modern, so any suggestions on who I can contact for that is greatly appreciated. My engine combination is listed in my signature, but feel free to ask me questions. Also, the car is a factory auto with a TH400. I am trying to decide between a Keisler 5 or 6 speed, or a 200R4 auto with overdrive. Any input for that would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance guys.

Go with the 12"., looks more natural in that car.

Putting a Ford rear in a GM really "gets my goat!" (te-he)

I have a 700r4 tranny with the overdrive and i love it.. had to get a new drive shaft but heyyyy its life.

I think for brakes its all about budget. People go with wilwood to baer to kore3. Its all about budget, just remember to save some money for your emergency brake setup. I think that cost 600 by itself.

ANd why do you want to swap rear ends?? do u have a 8.5 or 8.2? I hear that if u are not draging the car with slicks any rear end will do and because I assume as gto owner you dont want to cut into it so u arent going to minitub it. Your rear wheels probably wont be bigger than 285... and i dont think that warrants a rear end swap! Maybe upgrade ur differential and axle and keep it moving?

good luck and show a pick of the beaut 69!!!

good luck

Just my opinion as a 8.2 rear owner who.

I might have to stick with the TH400 for a little longer. The Keisler set-up is going to cost $5,800.00, and it is a 5-6 month wait. As far as rear end, it is a stock 8.2, and the carrier was on it's last legs when I put the 462 in it. This engine combo was already responsible for breaking two carriers, so I know the current carrier is not long for this world, it already goes in and out of posi at will :). As far as brakes I will probably go Wilwood, but I am still investigating. I am even re-considering the Vari-Shcock choice. I might go with Koni's, or QA-1's some suggestions there would be helpful. I do not plan on tubing it so the widest I can go on wheels is 10", 18 x 10's might look a little funny.

Did some more parts investigating yesterday. I have decided to NOT go with a Keisler set up. Too many questionable issues with them. Next question, how many of you here are running a hydraulic clutch? What are your thoughts?

I am using the Keisler firewall mount MC and a Quarter Master hydraulic TOB. I would never go back to a mechanical linkage. With that being said, setting up a TOB needs attention to detail. Keisler's full kit (which I do not have) uses a more forgiving Sachs bearing.

What shocks are you running on your 70'? Also, didn't you do an LS swap in your Goat?

This is my current ride height. The front is about a 1/8-1/4' higher right now because the hood is off. I'm not going any lower. This is with KYB shocks on it, I don't know if it will settle anymore with a vari-shock, Koni, or QA-1

Just before I put my GTO away for hibernation, I let my son take it out and take a little rubber off of the back tires...

He was always scared of it.

I think you have to be logged in to FB to see it, I'm working on trying to embed it.

The LS bone yard route with 6 speed is about as cheap as you just wanting to add a 5 or 6 speed to your existing setup. That's why I did it. The boat load of benefits as Andrew has point out above is just icing on the cake.

I don't doubt that it is cheap. My List of mods that I will be starting on here in a couple of weeks is adding up.

Kore3 Brakes $2,200.00

Double Adj. QA-1 Shocks $940.00

Swapping an 8.2 rear, for an 8.5 $1,800.00

Electric Fuel Pump $250.00-$300.00

And if I decide to bite the bullet now for the TKO 600 set-up $5,400.00+

Intro Wheels, and some tires 3,500+

This is all before the Re-paint... :)

I did some tuning on the GTO yesterday. I installed some stronger springs in the MSD HEI that is in it. The timing was going in and out of mechanical advance at idle, and the timing was jumping. new springs corrected that. I reset the timing, and re-adjusted the carb. The paint and body guy will be coming to look at it today, so I can get some idea about re-paint cost. I will be ordering a bunch of parts next week: Kore3 brakes(All the way around), TKO600 and install kit, new rear end carrier, 3.73 gear set, all new rear end bearings, QA-1 Shocks for all 4 corners. I will order new wheels as it gets closer to the paint being finished. I am also planning on having the exhaust turned down just behind the rear wheels. I am also looking at having the rear bumper redone in a brushed nickel.

Click on the picture for a short idling video.

The Paint/Body guy came by yesterday to take a look at the Goat. There is a lot of stuff I have to get done to this thing in a month. Unfortunately the TKO600 will not be one of them. I am going to have to put that on the back burner until later this year. With everything I am wanting to do to this thing, the paint, and body work was going to put me over budget. I will still get 90% of the things I wanted to do, but the Trans is a no go for now. The paint/body guy will have it for 3 months.

I have decided on GM Atomic Orange for the color. NO Stripes, no graphics, just the single color.

At this point, you might as well do a frame off! LOL

If you do a frame off, you can box the spring and I would also run the Global West extended front travel coilover kit. You can also reinforce the frame in the rear and run a proper coil over kit back there.

I know right. I did a frame off 7 years ago when I got it. Had I been interested in the pro-touring thing back then, I would have done things differently. I will at some point in this cars life, put a complete new chassis under it made for track time.

Spent 3.5 hours tonight removing the front lighting harness, and the engine harness. I managed to get the front lighting harness replaced. Tomorrow I will be removing the brake booster, M/C assembly, and cleaning up the firewall. I won't be doing the flat firewall conversion, so I will just get it cleaned up, and paint it satin black. Two weeks before the new Hydroboost system arrives. I may be asking for some guidance on the installation.

Two original Fenders showed up today. One has a dent, and the other has two small dents(quarter size), and a small patch of rust on the outer skin. Both are better than what was on the car, and the body guy knows what he has to start with.

A lot of stuff going on today. I removed all items that were hanging off of the fire wall. I am replacing my ext. regulated Alt with an int. regulated Alt, so was able to do away with the ext. regulator. I am putting in Hydro-boost, so the Vac Booster is gone. I washed the firewall, and gave it a coat of semi gloss paint.

Got my P/S Pump issue squared away. Now I am just waiting on more parts. I did get the electrical H/L door conversion in, so I will probably wire that up tomorrow. Not as productive as I wanted to be this weekend, but I used all of the parts that I have received so far. This week should be a busy UPS/Fed Ex week. My gauges should be here later this week, and if I get my dash harness, I can start that upgrade.

I got the ABS plastic mounting/backing plate cut for the new gauges. The cluster openings are 3 11/16" across, and my new gauges are 3 3/8" across. There will be a couple 16th's of an inch of the backing plate showing after the gauges are installed. I have some more trimming to do, and then a shot of flat black.

Dang...You're fancy....parking brakes and everything!!!

You will love modern brakes. I don't know how many people have told me how good my GTO stops, even with manual brakes and being 4100lbs with a passenger.

I had to splurge for the e-brake. They check that here in Texas.

It is going to be a busy week this week. My new suspension pieces will be arriving from Mark at SC&C. My Dash harness will be arriving, along with my hydro-boost system. I will have two weeks to get this thing up and drive-able for the paint guy.

I am getting excited now! :)

There is one word that I am learning very well in this rebuild/upgrade of my GTO. That word is: "Patience". Yesterday when I got home from work, I ran into the house like a kid on Christmas morning expecting to see a nice big box from SC&C with all of my new suspension pieces in it. The box that was waiting for me was quite a bit smaller than what I expected, and when I opened it all that was in it was my new upper control arms:crying:. I guess I better learn the patience thing, because when the paint guy picks this thing up in two weeks, I won't get it back for 3 months.

Long story here guys. 5 years ago, when I paid an alleged "Body/Paint guy to redo my GTO, I got sold a bill of goods (no other way to put it). 2 years after he did the body work and paint, the paint started to bubble up, and I don't mean your typical little rust under paint bubbles. Anyway, one afternoon, I decided to get out my hand grinder and see for myself what the idiot did. I discovered that instead of the guy taking the time to correctly align the panels with shims, and panel tweaking, all he did was bondo everything to line up. I swear he increased the weight of my car by 100#'s :). When the current guy came to look at the car, I showed him where I removed the paint, and just how thick the bondo was. All he could do was scratch his head, because he and I neither one could figure out why the previous guy had done what he did. So, two weeks ago, I removed all of the front end sheet metal and took it to the new shop. The new guy removed all of the paint, and found a layer of at least 1/2-3/4" of bondo on at least 80% of both fenders :o. Today I get a phone call from the new guy, and he told me that he removed the paint and bondo from the doors , and with a 6.00 box of shims, the fenders and doors fit, and matched damn near perfect. He will have to pull the drivers door forward just a smidge to even up the gap, but that is nothing. I took a couple of pictures. I am so pleased that the car is at a real body/paint shop. The next hurdle is to get the hood, and endura bumper fitting correctly.

Checked on the goat this morning. the shop got the drivers door moved forward just a little, so the gap now is balanced. The body guy peeled a piece of paint off of the hood that had bubbled up and handed it to me. Most of you probably already know this, but paint thickness should be somewhere between 4-6 mils thick. When the guy peeled the paint off, there was still a layer of primer left on the hood. I brought the piece back to the office with me and mic'd it. This car had been completely blasted and was starting with bare metal when the first jack-wagon got it. I will let pictures do the talking.

I have had the hardest time settling for the "One Color", "NO Graphics" paint scheme that I thought I wanted. I pulled out a 69 GTO Model, and did some painting today. The real car would have a black line separating the Atomic Orange and Silver

Any thoughts?, Comments?

Stopped by the shop this morning to check progress. They have been trying to get another customers 72' C10 finished for a 4th of July Parade, so not much has been done to mine. One custom thing that we are doing to my GTO is "tucking" the rear bumper, and painting it body color. They removed the bumper bolts, and welded the bracket to the bumper, and then welded up the visible bolt holes, and the jack slots.

IMHO:
Go single color. ORANGE
Anyone that knows me knows I don't like black wheels... HOWEVER, THIS THING LOOKS PERFECT WITH THEM!
Lastly, if, when you finish your ride folks tell you "that looks like a Foose car", it is quite an honor! Just make it YOUR dream machine. Then it will be perfect.......

Went by to check on this weeks progress. He got the hood on and the gaps cleaned up on the panels.Right now he is fixing all of the dings, and dents that seem to be all over this car. I also got another rendering in. It will need some tweaking, because the artist has it sitting too low, the wrong mirrors, and he has the rear spoiler on it, which I am not putting on mine.

Pictures from today's visit. They are pretty close to being done with all of the panel alignments, and are in the middle of fitting the front bumper. When they get done with this, they will sand it 1 more time to remove the last of the filler that needs to be removed. They will then prime it, and block sand it. When the block sanding is done, then they will prime it again, and then let it sit so that that the primer can settle and shrink. After the primer sits, and shrinks then they will wet sand it before they paint it.

HOK Tangelo

End paint debate

Tangelo requires shooting it over a HOK Base of white. The painter is telling me that that makes it a Tri-Coat, and wants an additional $900.00-$1,000. He may just not want to shoot it.

I know this is a mute point but the HOK Tangelo could have been painted over the grey primer. The white sealer he's talking about does give it that lil' extra pop! The color you chose is going to look awesome anyway.

I don't know about the Goodguys trip yet. I don't want a 4 hr trip to be the "Shakedown" trip. If I don't get mine back before Mid-September, it is going to be very tough to get it finished for either show.

Pictures later today. I removed the old steering box, and I started to remove the drivers side upper control arm. One stupid header pipe is in the way, so tonight I will remove the offending header (thankful for individual tube headers) and get the new SPC control arm on. I will just leave the tube off until I get the new brake lines connected to the distribution block.

Ok, got the upper control arms installed, as well as the new chin spoiler. I am trying to get it looking as much like the rendering as I can. Tomorrow, I will tackle the Vari-Shock installation on the front. I will have to drop the lower control arms and knock off the blind nuts that are inside the control arms, and then mount the shocks. This is going to be the fun part.

4 hours under the Goat tonight. Got the old shocks out, installed the Vari-shocks. I had to drop both lower control arms, remove the spring, grind off the welded on nut for the old lower shock mount. I bolted up the top of the new shocks, re-installed the springs, reset the lower control arms. I also temporarily installed the new tall spindles, waiting on new lower ball joint dust boots. I also installed the front braided brake lines.

Yep, NO More Kroger. Kroger booted them. I feel bad for the eateries around there. Niftee Fiftees was a big draw. Now they are looking at having it at the old Randalls at Louetta and Kuykendahl. That might be a questionable spot. We will see when the first show starts in March.

I had a question about the wheel tire combo. Iam doing a 68 GTO convertible right now. It was taken down to the frame and is now on the way back together. It is fitted with a complete Front and Rear UMI suspension.

What size wheels and tires did you use with what back spacings? Did you have to trim anything or do any other body mods to fit them? I am planning on doing a 17" or 18" wheel on mine and want to know from others experiences what will fit. It has 1" lower springs on both ends.

Your project is awesome I hope mine can be as nice. It is a factory Black convert with a black top and red interior. I am trying not to do anything to it that cant be reversed if someone should want to put it back to stock some day.

Thanks, Chris

Short of modifying the floor, there is not much I can do. Fortunately the headers are tucked up pretty tight. My front suspension is pretty taught so there is very little give. Hopefully I won't have to do anything.

Hooker headers for Ram Air IV heads, modified by a local fabricactor. When you change up all the suspension to aftermarket its not uncommon to run into issues with your headers. Plus I lowered my front end by 3". I needed the clearance underneath. Money is not important when you don't have enough to began with. My thought was to do it once and make sure its right. A little lesson I have learned over my 50 years of life.

I just could not leave well enough alone. Now I am kind of kicking myself because I have lost a summer of driving, and national shows because of it. I yanked the engine in April so that I could drop the oil pan to retrieve about 3-4 inches of dipstick that had broken off (don't ask).

While I had the engine out, I got the hair-brained idea to upgrade from the CnC ported Iron Heads, to the KRE CnC Ported Aluminum heads.....

So, I yanked, and sold the iron heads, and purchased the KRE Heads from SD Performance... 8-10 week wait :(

With the old cam out, I cleaned up the pistons, and repainted the block.

After talking to Dave at SD performance, I decided to go BIGGER with my Hyd. Roller Camshaft.

A buddy checking that the installation was correct.

I had been looking pretty hard at putting a 5 speed in this thing. However, the cost to do this with a new unit, was proving to be expensive. I had an opportunity to purchase a New, never installed built 200r4 with a 2800 stall lock-up converter at a heck of a price, so I snapped it up. I will have it gone through, and have the hardened parts replaced with billet parts, and I will be saving about $2,000.

I also purchased the items needed so that I can re-locate my battery to the trunk.

I am hoping to at least have her back together for the October Good Guys Event in Dallas...

SWEET! Is that SD Daves Old Faithful grind on a 114? With a 4.25 stroke crank that usually comes out to around 550hp and 600 ftlbs with the 295cc heads.

Yes it is, and Dave is doing the 305 CFM port job on my new heads.

You'll like having overdrive in the car.

I'm hoping to drive my car to FW Goodguys as well. Trying to get the local Firebird owners to go along.

My, oh my. You seem to take the long road to completing your car. I don't know whether to laugh with you, or cry for you! Just remember each improvement your taking with the car takes it to the next level. Good luck. R.P.

First head will ship tomorrow and the second one will ship on Monday, so if you can have the funds there on Friday would be great as we typically do the billing a day or two before shipping to avoid any delays on the day of shipping. We ship the heads separate to keep the values under $2000.00 so we don’t need to use a customs broker which drives the shipping cost up a bunch.

Thanks

Dave
