Hey guys,

This project is in full swing and the car has road miles already. I am leaning away from drag/high HP and working on more suspension/PT side of things with the project. I will give you a quick cliff notes of where it started, and where it is currently. I will be updating this thread as I go from here on out with the project.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/03/IMG_20120530_151106-1.jpg

One of my main focus's with this car was to build a very budget minded performance machine while trying to learn more about all aspects of the hobby. I strive to do DIY projects along the way. I do understand that working with the knowledgeable people around us does help, and our friends and family greatly help is accomplish our goals as well. I look forward to sharing my build with you all.

The car came into my family in 1989. It was bought from a friend of the family. It was originally a califorina car and we still have the protetco plate to this day. It came to us as a 350SBC with a power glide trans and bucket seats/console. It has been through a couple different carb'ed SBC's and ultimately was sitting engine/trans less for about 7 years while the engine was used for another family car ( 67 Camaro RS/SS Convertable).

Once I took enough time and $$ to finish the dettached garage, we brought the chevelle over to my place to start on the rebuild and get it back on the road.

The plans were orignally to do a LS swap and get it running with stock stuff, then build up from there.

Things snowballed a bit....

We picked up a lq4 from a wrecked truck, added a used turbo cam from ls1tech, push rods, head studs, and LS9 head gaskets. We topped it off with a Edelbrock pro-flo due to it being a great looking intake and a very good price point. The turbo kit was built by me and was built around a used Gt4276 Turbo. The turbo is rated to 1250 HP with the compressor and exhaust housings.

The transmission was a 4l80e from a friend that needed a rebuild. We sent it to our trans guy at Master Transmission in Rosemount, MN and added a PTC spec'ed conveter and a transgo HD2 shift kit. The rest was all left stock.

the engine way was cleaned up and all the wiring was done by me. We deceased to update the suspension for the added power. The front consists of JY sources LS1 brakes, Pro Comp A-arms, Pro forged tall upper balljoints, and a 1.25 Hellwig sway bar. Single adjustable QA1's n the front. The rear I selected the UMi roto-joints for upper and lower arms with the double adjustable links. we also added CPP frame braces, QA1 shocks and a hellwig pro-touring sway bar. LS1 brakes were also JY sources for the rear.

The wheels are BMW Parallel M's at 18x8 and 18x9.5 that were craigslist sourced.

The car puts down 767whp on about 16 psi, and is quite the handful on the street. We did Car-Crafts Real Street Eliminator this year and now want to work on getting into more autocross/road course type events. It is a great option to drag racing, and we had a lot of fun.

Any comments/questions/suggestions always are welcome. We have some plans for this year that we will be updating on here.

If you have some time, I do have the build thread for the car so far on lS1tech if you care to read more

Wow, this looks like fun. How street friendly is your combo? It looks great.

Thanks! I am assuming your talking about the turbo in regards to street friendly? It is very street friendly really, out of boost its just a cammed 6.0 really, very reliable, will take road trips no problem, and good torque. Since we have lots of available E85, the tune is not a issue under boost and I am able to take advantage of that. I am working on a pump gas tune so that I can take long road trips out of state and still play it safe.

Thanks. I actually am not running any spacers. The offset's seemed to fit perfect, and I even ran the stock BMW tire sizes this last year too. They are a bit tall at 245/40 and 275/45 but worked pretty good for a all season performance tire.

Haha, it is funny at shows when people keep asking and the look on their face when I tell them they are off a OEM BMW.

I hope to increase the power a bit by upping the boost. The stock bottom end doesnt owe me anything after this year, so I think we will see if she can hit 800+ with not much more work. :)

Nice fab work on the turbo.

Thanks, It was my first real "fab" job so there's lots of learning and the next one will be better, but I think it turned out pretty well too. Its always a good excuse to buy welders and more shop tools to make the next one better. Hopefully this year brings a nice TIG into the garage.

A twin turbo CJ? rock crawler or secret Camaro/Mustang killer?

haha, its a offroader, it has a 5 speed Manual, gears, lockers, chromoly shafts, winch etc. Once it get running/driving, a set of full width 1 tons and some 40's are probably on the agenda with a custom 4 link set up.

Updates:

Picked up a set of new injectors a while back. The 80lbers were aroudn 98% DC on the dyno pulls, and if we want to turn it up we were pretty much out of fuel. I found a good deal on a set of 200lb FIC injectors on LS1tech. They may be a bit overkill, but couldnt pass up a good deal and now if we ever build up a better engine, we are covered with injectors. They are short LS3 style so the fuel rails will have to come down. I can make it work with 2 -8 an straight to 3.8 npt fittings on the front rails.

We are looking into tires as well for this year and are swaying between the BFG KDW's and Nitto NT05's. I would love a set of Dunlop Direzza Z11's or a set of the new BFG Gforce Rival's but $ is a factor so they are pretty much out of the question. We are looking to squeeze 295/35/18 and a 275/35/18 on the stock tubs. I see that Tom Farrington's 66 fit them with stock tubs, so I think if it works out we might try the same route.

Justin,

Great project. You may want to look at the Falken Azenis RT615K tires. They offer a 295/40-18, which looks really good on our bigger, older cars. I run that tire on the back of my GTO with the 255/40-18 front.

Thanks, I will look into those as well.

I got some prices on NT05's today and they seem to be 200 TW and better priced than the BFG's. I do see most run the BFG's on here as well. Not much on the Nitto's though.

yeah, no pictures this time around.......................

I have a pile of parts and hope to get to take advantage of this good weather coming up. It should have been spring a month ago, and now we are finally snow free in WI/MN.

Last weekend I swapped out the JGC Steering box for a reman unit. The one I was running was from the JY and developed some leaks after last year.

Also the new centerlink had some slop as well, so we changed that out with a piece from Proforged. It is a very good quailty centerlink with nice joints and grease zerks.

We also tried fitting some 275's in the front, and boy is it close to the turbo. I hope to make it work going with a bit shorter tire.

I should have some updates and pictures from this coming weekend.

The plans this weekend:
gear swap
diff cover
axleshaft swap
install Proforged tall lower BJ's to work with the Proforged Tall Upper's
install injectors and get the offsets complete in HP tuners

I just grabbed the cheapest off rock auto, its a lares rebuild, it is rebuilt in cambridge, MN. I do not have any street time, so I cannot comment on quality. It came painted silver/gray already and was reasonably priced. I will report back after mutiple manuvers and autocross events.

OK Updates:

I just installed a complete set of Viking Performance Coilover's. These are new on the market and are Double Adjustable as well.

I highlighted my install in detail with lots of pictures in the Suspension section

I also worked on the engine a bit, I pulled off the crossover pipe and wrapped it with DEI Titanium wrap. I purchased a Turbo blanket from ebay, XPS I think it was. The DEI blanket is nice but couldn't justify the price. I think the XPS Titanium T4 blanket fits great and was a good deal at around 80 bucks.

I also made a new overflow for coolant since we orignally rigged up a cheap white plastic one when the car got running. I used a Stainless water bottle, made a fitting on the bottom and brackets and mounted it next to the BOV. I did not get a chance to snap a pic of it though.

It has been a while and I have lots of updates. I will start with current upgrades this year. Pictures to come also.

The short list is a forged 6.0, suspension upgrades, possibly brakes, and a bunch of little stuff. After running the car for 3-4 years now on budget parts, I have found some things worth upgrading to good stuff and found some things have lasted very well.

The stock bottom end 5.3 lasted a full summer before a rod knock, it had 170k when I put it in. I just pulled the engine a couple nights ago. Also while it is out I will be adding a high travel front Coilover kit from UMI performance and using a set of Viking performance shocks. I wanted to take the time to also re-notch the cross member since it is a bit tight getting the motor in and out.
