Im getting all the loose ends on my project figured out and i started looking at my gauges that i got for xmas and is seems that my Auto Meter tach #5897 only came with the tach and no install kit. Is this normal for a tach? It says it comes with a install kit but it only has the light bulbs and the covers to go on the bulb, it has 4 prongs on the back of the tach but no wires or anything to hook them to, I find it odd to have to make your own wires but maybe its this way with all after markets stuff, I really wouldnt know as this is my first one. As some added info i have a MSD set up with coil and a 6AL box. Its going in a 90 s10 that didnt have a tach from the factory as far as I know.

Hey Miles,
The way things work now-a-days is you usually have to buy the install kits seperately. I would'nt bother though and just make your harness from good quality automotive wire and connectors. I hope you got the instructions with the gauge but, if you didn't, you can download them right from Autometer.
If you need any help or advice just holler, I am proficient with wiring as are a lot of the other guys here. Ask away.

Your 6AL box will have a dedicated lead/connection for the tach. Then a good ground is all that is needed to make it work, other than wiring the lights up to your dash light circuit.

Thanks for the reply's, doing anything with wires has to be the worst thing about cars, im horribly slow at it and i normally dont get it correct the first time and that just makes it even worse.I just was wondering what was needed as I seen a install kit from summit for the tach was $80 and just got me thinking, good to know its so simple to wire it up, and when I end up screwing up my wires ill let you guys know, im moving all the wires from the engine compartment to under the dash, so ill have to cut and extend some wires so things will reach, Ill holler if and when I goof something up.
