I started rebuilding my 81 Malibu.I originally put it together when I was 15.. And 11 years later and after years of sitting outside here it goes, getting work done on weekends when I'm not on call..this is my first frame up and im pretty bare bones for tools and equipment.(and knowledge lol)
I'm not one for big stories so I'll let the pics do the work.

im hoping i get some more time this week to tidy that up, as well i need to remake the tubs i had a friend help me out with that...( the only part anyone helped with) and i dont like how they fit.. at all, so i picked up another comp engineering tub kit.. time for a little redo

Thanks! Car is setup for a 700r4, I have one mildly built, but looking at a Hughes or Tci version to replace..
And yes the tubes were fully welded just before I cleaned up for paint.

Plans are for an LS5.3 and tko 600 tailed up with a moser 12.. Next year when I can save up

Just a 1991 toyota 4x4. solid axle front.. on 20" beadlocks with 40" tires.. 4 linked rear suspension, i cut the frame off at the back of the cab and made my own tube rear section.. first time bending tube and with a manual bender haha
oh and its 4 cyl... with a final gear reduction of 223:1....first t-case is 4.7 gear set.. followed by a 2nd at 2.23.. and 5:29's in the diffs.. all locked up.. with an air actuated rear driveshaft disconnect for front wheel drive in those tight turn spots. with removable bed sides so i can still drive to trail if i want.

command centre haha.. with individual rear brakes to work with the driveline disconnect

it took about 3 months to remake.. it started like..

Im going to be going with the same front end pictured in the 1st pic.. blacked out, and bumper sectioned and tucked powder coated satin black as well..

is the el camino front end more desirable? more appealing? do post a pic if you have one, id like to see :)

If youre sticking with a light color and chrome rims then yes you need an el camino front end, direct bolt on check it out.

[QUOTE]

Plan was satin black.. everything else blacked out with a touch of brushed aluminum here and there to tie in with the rest of the chassis and motor accents..

thanks for the pic! opens my eyes to that idea, never really noticed the elcamino front end before... definetly considering that now..

i started making up some hard lines last night.. i was a little un-sure on the whole setup and i never really got a complete answer from anyone... SO my plan is to run the stock (but new) distribution block/brake light switch.. followed by a baer proportioning valve on the rear line right before the in-line hand hydraulic brake.. and then back to the T on the diff.

meh. the later nose (came stock on malibus, not just el caminos) looks too much like a caprice IMO. the earlier single lights look better, but to each their own. I always preferred the single headlights to the quads.

anyway, I love this build! I had a '78 malibu for a little while in the early '90's (w/ a 3 speed stick!) but didn't have the money at the time to finish it.

I think you should stick with the 81 front end. You don't see them to often because everyone either has the 78/9 or the 83 quad headlight setup. Clean lines and just a nice grille/headlight bezel setup.

You shouldn't use a disc/drum combo valve for 4 wheel discs. The metering & proportioning setup for rear drums will cause excessive rear lockup with rear discs. Master Power Brakes sells a bolt in combo valve that is set up for 4 wheel discs.

thanks tommy..

Ive again changed my plan, ive ordered a master cylinder from an 82 camaro with the rear disc option, and ill use only a wilwood prop valve with brake light switch after that..

LS6 Tommy
11-01-2012, 05:27 PM
Good deal! That's a better setup as you can usually build a high performance 4 wheel disc brake system that works just fine without any metering. The Wilwood valve doesn't provide any metering function. At least not the one I'm thinking of.

And cleaned up until another couple free days, slowly but surely..

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

mounted handbrake, finished a few supports from trunk hinges to tubs.. and finish welded everything else left.. spent half a day cleaning up every spot where work was done to look purdy..

Decided to cut out fender lip for some more clearance.. cut and tacked it back together as i went.... can stuff a 14'' wide tire tucked now... weeee

seam sealed the whole underbody.. which was messy as hell, i dropped a huge blob in my beard and spent a half an hour with acetone getting it out ( didnt pass out tho!) win...

next day i cleaned up the rest of the underbody and scuffed up...then masked off for some underbody rubber rock guard..

Finished a bit more this weekend. Started out by shortening the obscenely long factory bumpers a few inches, tucked them in tight..
- installed trans last week.RMVB 700r4, upgraded internals and added a 2200 stall converter..( thanks geard customs! )
- went thru and tightened all suspension
- finished up 95% of the brake lines, installed master, booster and pedal assembly. just handbrake to go.
- starter/distributor/fans with shroud/trans cooler/stage 8 header hardware.
- fuel cell, prelim filter and pump mounted.. Going to get fittings to plumb it all tomorrow.
-installed heater setup, started to layout painless kit..
-locks mirrors and other misc as well.

More to come this week.

This last weekend i finished up all the engine bay wiring... ran all the 1/2 aluminum fuel line and the main power from battery... made my junction point in the 1/4 brake line on the drivers side for the hydraulic hand brake.. tidied up a bunch of other loose ends and spent a good 3/4 of a day cleaning the shop, wire mess everywhere.

i only took a few pics but ill get some more tonight.

this is after all the wiring was finished... still looks nice and clean!.. i ran the alternator wires up from the bottom and kept everything else tucked away as best i could.

I've been having cabin fever not having time to work on my car, and looking at your photos reminds me what I did to mind and has eased my nerves a bit. Very cool stuff you've done, and the matte black looks great. Engine looks great too.

I noticed when you boxed your frame you didn't have holes for the center body mounts. I made a separate plate with a hole for mine that I welded in between the two solid plates. What did you end up doing with that? Check out post 258 here- Pumkinator frame (https://www.pro-touring.com/showthread.php?80582-Pumkinator-A-G-Body-G-Machine-grocery-getter/page13&highlight=pumkinator)

Keep updates coming!

Thanks!! initially when i boxed in the rails i safety wired the bottom energy suspension bushing in place i didn't take any pics of that i guess.. it kept it in place and easy to line up after paint when i assembled with the body.

The heater is just a flexalite mojave system with one of there dual outlet plenums, used some heater ducting and made an outlet for defrost and a floor level.

Being a good Dad outweighs anything we can do in the garage, congrats. He your first? How old, he looks almost brand new.

My oldest is 15 now and will be driving very soon. Already have a Nova project for him. He's in basic automotive this year in school and is learning a lot, he's soaking it all up. Almost scares me that he's as into cars as much as I was when I was his age. Lol! When he was 12 and 13 there was a big conflict between us parents and him. Now that's all sorted out and he and I spend a lot of time together discussing cars and such. As much as I encourage him to chase what ever he wants to do in life it's nice that we have this bond centered around our hobby of hot rodding. Hope it works out for you that way too!
