Can any of you guys tell me what it is about the camshafts that are for designed for fuel injection applications makes them unique? I am putting together a Gen I 406 SBC that I have intended to run fuel injection on (including already purchasing the FI setup and camshaft). It turns out that I need to sell the FI to help fund the finish of the paint and body work that is currently going on. I would like to put a carb on it for a while to get the car driving up and down the road and then just put the FI on it later when I can aford it again. I realize that the engine will obviously "run" with the combination of FI cam and a carb, but what problems am I likely to see? About the only thing I could see really being a problem is if I somehow wound up not having enough vacuum to pull the fuel through the carb. Anybody got any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

I'm not a cam expert but here are my thoughts:
EFI cams generally don't have as much overlap to generate more engine vacuum at idle and low speeds. A carb will run fine with an EFI cam but could tolerate less vacuum and an ideal cam for a carb might have a little more low end but rougher idle due to the extra overlap.

Thanks, David! I was hoping someone would say I would be OK until I can buy the fuel injection system again. I could not think of any reason why it would not work (albeit not completely ideally), but I am not a camshaft engineer either.

I found that you can post this type of question on Comp Cams' website and I will do so just to see if I can get any of the experts over these to give us any other insight. I'll post up any and all feedback I get just in case we could all learn something.

Thanks again,
Mike
