I have a 9'' housing in my 61 and 5 years ago I had to replace the drivers axle bearing seal. I chalked it up to that the year before when on my first drive in the car I had a wheel come lose and that is what maybe let the new seal go by the summer after. Now this summer I noticed the passenger side is leaking a bit. It is a big bearing ford 9'' housing with the lincoln markV discs on it as well as dutchman axles.
Is there anything else I should check to make sure this isn't just coincidence? Or is it possible for it to just go after 5-6 yrs of only summer driving?
FYI it is a taper bearing style.....

Do the axles slide in and out easily or do you need big hammers for assembly?

From what I remember they went in and out pretty good. No hammers. If my memory serves me correct just a good ''tug'' on it and it popped out last time. I am yet to pull this one out, probably do it this weekend and get a new seal and bearing pressed on monday.

The axle came out with a slight tug on the flange.
I could move the bearing about .155'' away from the retaining collar once the axle was out, is this normal?
before I removed the axle i removed the wheel, and brakes and I could pull the flange in and out about .045''. Good? Bad?
I also noticed a small nick in the seal not sure if this was the cause of my leak though.
Is it a good idea to smear a little sealer around the outside of the seal where it seals to the housing?

Do you have a working vent? Look for it on top of one of the axle tubes.

It does have a vent but will have to check it to make sure it is good. I am guessing it is cause it leaks all the time lol. Upon taking it apart yet again it seems that it is leaking at the seal part that seals to the axle not the housing.
