I have a Chevy 10 bolt. I would like a Chevy 12 bolt but I don't have the money right now. So can I build up the 10 bolt?

Why, are you drag racing, building a 1000hp fire breathing monster?
Bob Joysey and his dad ran street car races on 8.5 10 bolts and could stand car on bumper and did it on 8.5 10 bolts. ring gears not much bigger on 12 bolts nad good parts ar now available for both 8.5 and older 8.2 (BOP)10 bolts.
Lot of people have made tons of cash selling scrap 12 bolts to guys replacing 10 bolts and then those guys spend tons of cash getting them built.
Unless your putting HUGE slicks on, turning 700 to 1000 lb ft of torque, pass.
My local machinist ran a 64 Tempest with a 400 Pontiac, crane super flow RAIV heads, HUGE cam, 4 speed and race 11 1/2 lb class(ie 11 1/2 lbs per CI.ie a 4150 lb car) and slammed a 4 speed muncie and all he ever did back in the day was strip ring gear teeth off as Pro Gears were not invented yet. Estimates on specs of engine 589 hp, 698 lb ft of torque, wheels up, and a 4 SPEED.
Save your cash , add in some good Moser street tuff axles, maybe a good posi and gears and enjoy.

Not many sink money into the 8.2. The 8.5 can be built just about as strong as the 12 bolt. And like Lee said, what type of driving are you planning on?

I planning to put 3.73 gear in it. I heard the 10 are junk. But you saying I'm going go to the junk and get one. What bears and gears should I use?

Also think long term. If you will be adding more and more power over time it might make sense to build the rear end ONCE.

But I agree. The 8.5 10 bolt is an overlooked piece.
