      Bolts for 3 Pc Wheels

I just received some 3 piece wheels and the bolts don't seem right. What grade and size bolts should be used? These are blind bolts. Should there be any locking devices or locktite? What do you have on your cars?

Thanks for any information. This whole precess has been a nightmare instead of fun.

They seem to be working hard to correct the problems. I am giving them a chance to make it right.
      These are the bolts.

Per the head marking, Class 8.8 metric hardware is analogous to Grade 5...can't tell the size without more info, a wrench size, something. "JH" is the manufacturer stamp. The best way to determine what you have would be to remove a fastener and measure the thread diameter/pitch and length if the manufacturer/supplier can't provide that info, although they should be able to.

If you want a higher quality fastener, you could always run an NAS aircraft grade fastener in either stainless or titanium, neither of which are cheap, however the Ti fasteners even less so. I'm not cool enough for 3-piece wheels, so that's all I've got.

That looks like a 1/2" head so I'm guessing 8mm bolts. I don't like star washers for anything but grounds.

Forgeline uses ARP fasteners in stainless. If you wanted something prettier I would go that route. The flange on their botls should cover the scars left by the star washers. torque to spec with some loctite and you should be good to go.

My NewGens are identical to that. Been running them for a few months now and no issues....yet. I'll admit I wasn't very happy when I saw star washers either. I plan on swapping them out with better fasteners over the winter.

Thanks for the input. The vendor is working hard to make me happy. Grade 5 (metric 8.8) m8 x 1.25 provide approximately 2,800 lbs of clamping force each. I think a properly torqued bolt will stay tight. I will remove the washers and may use some locktite.

I am just used to seeing 12 point bolts on 3 piece wheels with exposed bolts.

If you don't want to mar the wheel finish worse than the star washers probably already have, you could invest in some AN washers. The have small OD's and are pretty inexpenisve, something like $3.99/50 qty for stainless through Speedway for the 5/16 size which should interchange with M8. They're also available in steel and aluminum options, but the added bearing surface for the underside of the hex head would be a good thing IMO.

      Larry,

If you want some 12.9 SHCS call me up. I have metric and will size some AN washers for you.

If I dont have them at the store I can order anything.

I can't believe what I am seeing. Is that a star washer??? and plain jane screws??? I can't believe something claiming to be high end went so wrong in the details.

Granted I am certain they will hold the wheel together just fine, it clearly shows a lack of engineering. This is no place for a star washer.

Industry standard would be a nice flanged reduced head fastener like pictured. These are ARP stainless.
