Holy Cow.. can this be right???

So I just bought a car from a guy in Florida.. It is a beautiful 69 Camaro Convertible that has been redone in Viper Red with Black Stripes.. I dont believe anything is original on the car but then again I haven't checked anything out.. So when they ran the VIN in their system, it came back as a 1969 Camaro Convertible Z11 PACE CAR! I told them that it must be a mistake but they said that when they punched the VIN number in that is what the system told them that the car was... Does that mean I have a 69 Z11 CONVERTIBLE PACE CAR?? How do I go about proving it and potentially documenting the car as such? With all of the CLONES and FAKES out there I wouldnt want to portray it as something it is not nor would I want to go through the expense of making what it originally was without being able to document it as that.. Anyone gone through this before?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if there is any way to verify a true Z11 through the VIN, but here is some info that may interest you.

I know it is not in that list of 55 that were actually at the indy 500... That would have been unbelievable but there has to be a way of getting Z11 Pace Car VIN numbers.... I am curious on WHY it would pop up at the registry that way?

You should be able to identify it throught the cowl tag. Does the car have the cowl tag and does it look like the original? You might want to check out camaropacecars.com. I hear those guys know everything about pace cars.

I dont beleive there is any way to document a Chevy.... So I dont know how they would know it a Z11 Pace car...

Pontiac has PHS.....

and I am pretty sure MOPAR and Ford have services....

Pretty much why there are more 69 Z28's running around then Chevy ever built.....LOL

What is "their system"?

The only thing a VIN can and will determine: Make, 6 or 8 cyl, vert or coupe, year, built in LA or Norwood, and sequence that it was built. That's it. Anything other than that on a title or database is irrelevent.

The trim tag has more useful body build info but they are faked left and right.

YEA I agree with you there.... I dont know how the heck the registry would be able to punch that number in and have it pop up as a Z11 Pace Car Convertible. I would ask them but they are pr*cks to deal with past getting them to do ANYTHING in the CommonWealth of Massachusetts... Thats why I am trying to dig up info here. . Cowl tag has a X11 code but then again I dont think it is original to the car.. I can imagine why if the original cowl tag had a Z11 code on it that someone would want to take it off but then again Ive seen really screwed up things so.. Anyways, I know the last 6 numbers on the pace cars that were in INDY started off with 631... or at least with a 6 as the first number in the series code and mine is 588885 so would that help at all? Not gonna change a thing as if it was originally a pacecar then I would have to put waaay too much into it to restore it as such but the more and more I look into it its starting to look just like an SS CONVERTIBLE.. Which I am not complaining about that. Its a beautiful car!!

I don't know of any Camaro Registry ..
And I don't think any state governments keep car records for the whole country either ..
Also , A VIN on a '69 Camaro will only tell you whether it was a coupe or convertible , 6cyl or 8cyl engine ..
The Trim Tag under the hood is actually better for option info.

If your car is a Z11 Pace Car Convertible , In the bottom RH corner of the Trim Tag , it will have a Z11.
If it has an X11 , it was an SS350 ..

As others have pointed out, the trim tag next to the master cylinder will help.

How does the firewall look? Does it have all the original holes? Or were they all filled in?

If you PM the info to me I can check the range of the VIN and the data on your trim tag to see if they are in the right range to see if they are correct for each other.

There is no way to prove it without documentation and have no idea why it came up that way. I find it crazy to think someone would replace a Z11 tag with an X11 tag. Have you checked to see if the hidden vins match? btw, the registry I think being referred to is CRG or www.camaros.org

Mike is completely right about the X11 tag. Check the VIN on top of the cowl and compare to the VIN tag.

Tony I will send you the VIN and tag info tonight. Thank you for doing that for me. Thanks guys! As usual I am dealing with MASSACHUSETTS so I wouldnt be surprised to find out that they tried to find the HIGHEST value they could find so they could charge more sales tax! Heck they should have told me that I have the ONLY Z28 Convertible made!!! LOL! The Cowl Tag VIN matches the VIN on the car and it has an X11 on the tag. Dont know if its the original one or not though and like many have said I dont see why someone would want to change it from a Z11 car to an X11 car. Either way I am very happy having an SS350 CONVERTIBLE camaro but just thought it was weird seeing that when it came back from the registry.. Now I have to file for an abatement to get tax money back.. big pain in the arse but then again thats what I get for living in TAXACHUSETTS!! Thanks again for the info guys!

i think it is a typo and still do not know why they would have that code in their database. X11 can be an SS car, so enjoyed it. BTW, if it was the ONLY z28 convertible it would be a 68 and worth 7 figures.
