Thanks for standing on your engine and taking a "top-down" shot of the front suspension to show us just how far mid engine this beast is. Nice work. Did you run any numbers to plan the balance out for 50:50, or are you not very concerned with that as long as it is reasonably close?
I'm not sure that I can figure the weight ratio just yet. I still need to get some more parts but, since the motor is so far back I can guess that it should be pretty close to 50/50(ish).

Awesome work... The parts from the 2 axis computer controlled plasma cutter look awesome. Really cool to apply your skills to such a unique body choice. I'm subscribed because I look forward to seeing this B.A. ride when you're done with it.
Do you ever do piece work on the cutting table if someone (oh, like another Pro-Touring forum member) were to send the CAD file?

The UCA mounts are tacking as well as the motor mounts. I was able to start the LCA mounts and still need to finish the mates to both sides. I did get the hubs free of the stanchions to see how well everything. So far so good, just need to get the steering rack and finish the rest of the car.

I started mocking up the front Big Brakes, I'll run the stock brakes for a while as this turned out to be a bigger deal. I want to buy another set of uprights to modify to except these Brembo's. For those wondering I did slightly modify the calipers and intend to do so on the uprights. I won't disclose the specifics on how or what we are doing to make this work until I am done. This is purely for mockup and I don't intend to drive this on the road with bolts that are to long and with stacks of washers!
Stay tuned for more.

I can't figure out why the front upper A-arm/wishbone mounts are in single shear on the Corvette... If it worked there I am sure it will work here though. Seems like it would be flexible.

Double sheer is always a better option when packaging and weight are not an issue. It does depend on the dispersion of the load and the directional loading of the bolts in sheer that will determine the fatigue rates and yields. In this setup where the centerline of the a-arms pivot sticks out only a minimal distance past the mouting surface for the wishbone ( where the bolt in single sheer is at its strongest) "flex" is not a real issue. The shock and spring absorb the vertical forces and act as a non stationary fulcrum. However the farther the distance between the mounting surface and the pivot (in this case)...the forces will be increased and the yield as well as the fatigue rate will suffer.

I don't think weight or packaging is a problem here. Those LCA bolts should be rigged in double sheer. A corvette weighs in the low 3k lbs with a better weight bias. What is the front end of this going to weigh when it is done?
Question for the OP. Have you calculated a new camber curve to compensate for the increased body roll this car will have vs the suspension donor car? If you haven't, perhaps a lower hole for the UCA's will provide some adjustability? Plus, I would like to see a small plate perpendicular at the top of the UCA bolt flange.
I wouldn't normally ask these questions of a work in progress, but I was a bit curious.

I have to agree with Ochohill on this one, at least a small triangle or fish mouth gusset layed horizontal from the top of the mounting surface to the vertical support of the side of the mounting surface. If you could figure out a creative way to put those bolts in double sheer I would go for it. Espically the way they are spaced away from the mounting surface. Never skip on safety right! Just my .02. Looks great Matt!

The LCA mounts will be in double shear, I just got lazy and still need to cut the other sides. I think I mentioned that in a previous post. Almost all of the time I'm updating this after a 17 or 18 hour day and the weekends it's a cat nap followed by several red bulls until like 3am Friday and Saturday. So if I did forget to mention that I apologize for any confustion.
I had someone who does suspension analysis professionally review the design. The whole front end was narrowed about 2" everything regarding the dynamics changed considerably. You guys can review the final design but I think we did a good job.
As always thanks for reading and commenting!

The bolts on the original vette crossmember were placed in single shear. Unless there was a way to sandwich the crossbar between two plates would be about the best way. Right now the mobility and configuration of the suspension wouldn't allow this and I think would hinder the design overall. Eventually I will swap the bolts for something stronger than "grade 8" and thicken the supporting structure to beyond a 1/4". If I can get some time I want to make a plate that doubles the UCA thickness. Trust me I know this seems strange but I got this!

I didn't bring up the LCA chassis mounts, those looked like a "1/2 done, position set, will come back later" thing to me. The Upper wishbone pivot tube being in single shear just looked flimsy and before I posted I went and looked at Vette pics. Same exact mounting. My post was more saying why did chevy lay it out like that, not why did you copy it. I am sure it is fine. If you look at the forces, they are mostly in line with the bolts (axial), so no real shear/bending issue. I am glad you have it plated up to .25" though, good to be safe.
Keep up the good work. And you should get rid of some of your customers so you can work on this more. They can wait. Haha

I'll be swamped for the next couple of weeks I think. Once I'm done with customer stuff I'll get back on the car. I'm not sure I'll see it on the ground by mid-May like I had hoped.

As promised... BODY MOUNTS! Whipped these little guys up in a little bit just of time. Sunday is the only day I have to work on my car until my customers car is done. I think I'll do another two for the rear to connect to the sub frame some how. Also I will make some trick pockets for the roll cage to sit into.
Thanks for reading!

So I've been back for 7 days now. I've managed to put about a hundred hours (or damn close) into the car to get it off the jig and to a car show. So you might think car show as in running driving, but I happen to apart of a good group of friends that helped me trailer my car over there. It must admit I got some funny looks rolling a car over into my spot. I heard some snide comments concerning the fact it didn't run or it didn't have a motor, floors or whatever. I popped the hood to be greeted by a the small group of people that suddenly fell silent. It took a solid two minutes before anyone really said anything. The silence was broken by a solitary phrase, "That's so ****ing awesome!" Everything after was awesome that. We spent from 10am to 3pm just talking, telling the story of the Plymouth to everyone. Out of 70 cars it was one of the only cars that had a constant crowd out front. I'm sunburned, tired but it couldn't have been anymore fun!
I missed you guys, I hope you missed us too. More to come and as always stay tuned.

great build! I have loved following it!
I hope that you are NOT doing a rat finish. it would not do the car justice!
for the outside of the car I think that a 2" chop in the front and a 3 or 4" chop in the rear would give it an awesome led-sled look.
that's my 2cents.

I'm going fix the dents and rust, polish all of the trim and clear the patina. I want the inside and fab to the focal points. I am a little scared to cut the roof off on the car right now. It's on the down hill slide and I don't want to get myself in a bind. I'm glad you enjoy the car and the work.

You have great drive and are using skills you learned years ago and now they are paying huge returns in a passion compared to fixing USAF planes which could have been fun at times yet this build has taken on its own life and I'm truly enjoying the passion you have for your show piece, not sure where abouts your located along the state, yet you're work and hands on approach is reassuring to myself that it's doing a little each day/week you can and don't be afraid to start over when a better method shows it's head, I'm happy to see the art of metal working from a budget minded guy get things done at a very high level of craftsmen ship, when you pounded out this blister panels I loved it, forming metal is an art it's own, love the fab work and most of all your distinguished style to make your chassis one off and functional, with C4 suspension upgraded with huge Brembo's to the massive radiator, I love your ability to find great parts and resurrect them, your engine was in shambles and you breathed life back into it. Hard work and patience has done you well, I've done my share of custome exhaust over the decades back east for many hotrod members, those old guys love their flame throwers! from 50's street rods to 1927 Rolls Royce Limo's, it's all about satisfying your customers, bending is something I'm sure you'll have mastered in time, just be patient. Enjoying the effort to rebuild your tools/machines too. Awesome skills and vision to be different!!! Way to go, your an inspiration to myself...

Oddly your words ended up being inspiring too. I guess sometimes I forget that not everyone can do this stuff. Thanks for the kind words.

I trimmed and fitted the dash to the accommodate it's new location since the cage has been finished. I had to cut more than I expected to get it to fit around the cage but I'm happy with it! I'll start to plan mounts and how to close all of it out. I really don't want to turn it into a big project, something clean and simple will do the trick.
I also finished the drivers side body to cage mounts.

Maybe you covered it in an earlier post, but why did you "bob" the rear frame rails, then build new outriggers for the fuel cell (instead of just making the frame full-length)?

I didn't see a reason to build this massive frame work to hold a fuel cell. The roll cage termination dictated the upright length and size, once again not trying to add more weight than need be behind axle. Thanks for the interest.

Do you sell those spindle fixtures to set the ride height on the front
Hey gang,
Finally made some progress after my weld table top showed up. I started the day by cleaning the factory GM parts which took forever. Afterwards I started mocking everything up and building supports so the cross member. I forgot to take pics of the progress I made after last pic. I'm going to try and make as much of it as I can out of one flat sheet of metal. It'll look bad ass I think. I'm tired and I'm sure this doesn't all make sense.

Give me the exact size of the tire, the size of the hub and I can give you a price. These are to just locate the hub at ride height and not to support the whole car.

I don't know how I missed this build, but please provide a link to where I (and others) can find your chassis progress and whatnot. Apparently, you've exceeded the capacity of the server here, and many of your progress pics have been wiped out. I've seen a few of these old Chrysler Co. bodies around my neck of the woods, and have had some sick thoughts related to doing a chassis switcheroo. Yeah I got it out of a NASCAR set up that I found on eBay. It's probably too large but for the money I paid I won't lose sleep over it not working or not.
I like T5s a lot but I already owned these and had the installed in my old shop. Should be everything I need for right now.

I've resumed progress on this thing again (finally) between my move from Cali and getting the shop going again it's been a little stressful to say the least. I won't bore you with the details of the rigors of adult life but I'm sure on some level you guys can relate.
In the past few weeks I've done a lot, or more than I expected to anyways, I was able to strip the chassis down to nothing and started finish welding all the stuff that was just tacked together. The front is currently done and now I'm working on populating the rear of the car with the remaining bits and pieces. I built a new fuel cell mount since the original was damaged in the move, I welded all the tubes on the roll cage and the remaining suspension points and I started to build out the trunk sheet metal. Believe me when I say it's hard work! Well I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking and feel free to ask any questions.

Yeah there's been a few cars in and out of the shop since I've last posted. I actually built a car from nothing in about 6-8 months to flip. I just never had time to really work on the Plymouth but I got time here and there. I had a few customers that would make me feel guilty about working on personal cars and I avoided doing so to not deal with confilct. Soon I'll post the last two cars I built to show you guys what I've been doing.

Instead of eating BBQ and drinking too many cold beers I took some the time to work on the Belvedere this weekend. I was able to get the forward close out panel that's over the wheel well trimmed, fitted and installed. I also bead rolled the adjacent panel and worked out the lap joint between the two parts. After all of that was accomplished I added a two piece fender brace that will get riveted on mid way down the wheel well. That's pretty much it. Just waiting on my air ride stuff to arrive.

Today, I built these mounts for two Viair 444c Stealth compressors. It's integrated onto the back side of one of the trunk close out panels which keeps the trunk area open and clean looking. It's CNC plasma from 1/4" mild steel and will mount with screws or perhaps some rivets. I haven't decided yet. The bracket itself is light and has been designed to support 1.5x the weight thus keeping things as slim as need be.
It's been a slow last couple of days in terms of tangible progress. I did however, order a large amount of the parts I need for this project to continue the major build out. Today, I'm expecting my air tanks and valve block to arrive so I can populate the sub-trunk area with those components. The next big items will be the battery, fuel system parts and main electrical harness.

I made this primary fuel filter mount. The bezel will get some fine stainless mess to keep any vapor from building up and keep junk out. The lower portion still needs the flange trimmed and fit better. I still need to come up a bead pattern for the filler panel.
The air tanks and the like should be here soon. Pretty excited about that.

Very cool to see the progress!
I know it is early to ask but have you thought much about how you are going to finish the inside of the car?
It would be fun to see the inside match the feel of the patina on the outside. Some paint - rust - clear coat?

I probably won't have rust but I plan on using this black patina that I have and then maybe clear or just wax to seal it up. I might paint the bottom of the car black to help provide a real barrier against corrosion.

Quick update for you guys, I was able to get these two small things done. I also was able to build the lower brace that fills in under the fuel cell mount, it can be seen with the lightening holes. I added mesh to the primary fuel filter bezel and riveted the housing onto the floor panel. The battery selector switch was originally supposed to be mounted into the side panel with just a simple bezel, after mocking it up I realized that I hated it. I do like the formed mesh and thought it could be neat to incorporate it somehow in another design feature so I added it to the lower cut outs in the bezel. The mesh isn't functional but it still looks better than just a flat plate screwed to the side.

So my battery showed up and I got to work right away making a battery box that holds the battery in the dead space inside the rear quarter. Originally I planned to mount it low and out of the way but it ended up in a strange spot that wouldn't allow you to access it if the car was down all the way. I riveted the remainder of the panels on to the body and started laying out the last floor panel. It should come together quickly I hope! Then on to the firewall and the rest of the sheet metal.

I built this small tool tray to store just simple things you should have in a vehicle. I'm hoping it's big enough to put a small air hose to fill tires up in case of an emergency. The "ribs" that connect the fuel cell to the floor do double duty, not only do they hold up the inside edges of the floor but they also connect the body to the rear sub frame. Since most of the original body bracing was rusted out or removed to install the chassis it left the rear flimsy and weak. Now there's no flex and it looks much better than the original, factory trunk floor.
The lid of the tool tray will get a Hartwell latch and a small piano hinge to keep it in place. I plan to move onto the forward trunk area next and then start on the firewall.

Just wrapping up things on this trunk area. Still some small detail pieces to finish but I did get the trunk stay built and mounted (sort of) I need an offset rivet set to get some of the rivets. The ribs under the fuel cell are mounted, the lower section is riveted on and the top is welded. I don't have a Terry drill so I wasn't able to drill the ribs from the inside to install fasteners so welding it was.
Today or tomorrow I plan to install the motor and trans again and then start the firewall. Once that's done I'll be able to get my Tilton pedals installed into my toe well and get my steering column set up.

I started on the firewall after wrapping up most of the trunk. The motor was reinstalled and major components installed. Tonight I'll start to get the passenger side toe box wrapped and ready to install. The top half of the firewall will be removable to aid in removing or working on the engine. The inside will have a dog house built so that you can get to the back side of the engine too.
I still need to order a bunch more parts like fuel lines, brake lines, master cylinders, brake reservoirs, steering shaft stuff, electrical harness and more.

I love the detail you've added to the top firewall panels. Could you explain / tell us more about how you recessed the entire center section? I'm sure the vertical lines were made with a bead roller, right? But I'm curious how you were able to recess the whole interior section of each panel?
Thanks!

So different project but same set up. The key to this whole thing is good layout. Before I start I clean the metal with acetone and ultra fine scotch brite. I look for any flaws in the metal that might be in the way, deep scratches, bents, rust spots or whatever. I use different color, fine tipped sharpies for the lines (blue for beads, red for cutting and green/black for bending), grab yourself some scrap and go through a mini version of the part you are going to make, I've got a lot of little parts I tested to see how they will work, after all it's only metal, buy extra and don't be afraid to start over. Set your dies up with whatever profile you need, I use a tipping die and an offset die sometimes in tight spaces (as pictured), make sure you check that you have the throat clearance to do the whole piece, it happens to me sometimes and it sucks, run your boarders first and then add your inside pattern if you have one. I normally hold back from the edge of my boarder .5" or so to keep the offset from getting crushed. Clean again with acetone and scotch brite and you're good to go.
The firewall piece is just an 1/8" offset die on the boarder and the "pinstripe" is a tipping die with the lower die (the open channel part) of a 1/4" round bead die.
I hope that answers your questions, if not feel free to ask more or give me a call 561-662-7117.

I started on the dog house that will cover the engine but didn't take pictures because it's pointless to look at right now. I did also start laying out the pedal and column location. I'm trying to drill the firewall once and not botch the **** out of it. The wheel is just for mock up and so are the boards. New wheels are on their way too so it should be cool.

I just don't have the space for it to be honest. I never planned to go that wide with the wheels but got a sweet deal on them. 275-295 is probably too small of a tire but I also don't want the car to push in corners.

After fitting the center filler I got to work on sorting out the lower floor sections. I used a tipping die on my bead roller to help form a flange on the lower portions of the rear side panels (as noted by the row of clecos). I did manage to get the upper filler piece made too. This is as far as I've gotten the past few days. I managed to get the interior sheet metal at least bent up and formed for the most part. The trans tunnel is taking shape. I need to drill a few hundred holes, deburr, paint the back sides of the panels and assemble. I need to get the dash sorted out too, it needs to be mounted properly, end caps made and some structure added.
My new coil packs should be here this week so I can at least get those mounted, I don't have a lot of space so they will get relocated to a lower portion of the engine or most likely on the trans tunnel some how.
Next week I need to order all my fuel system stuff and get it plumbed up. My stainless steel brake lines just arrived so I will have to bend those up soon too. I hope a lot of this is straight shots to and from components which will save me a lot of time. The worst thing for me is going to be bending up my airlines and mounting them.

I made a good amount of progress today. I was able to weld some panels together, reconfigure the shifter offset, build this center console bezel and get the dash laid out. I can say the console bezel is one of my favorite parts so far, the hammer formed metal really adds to the design. The dash still needs to be formed, bead rolled and riveted together. I need to figure out how to fasten it to the body, I'm guessing simple tabs that it will rivet to. My R888's arrived yesterday too! I'm hoping the wheels come back from powder coat soon, the stuff should be cool as heck!

So I've gotten a lot done in the past few days. I managed to install my Banski Motorsports Camber and Toe rods installed and the rear end rehung. It's interesting to install the wheels into the car, the hubs must be broken down and installed onto the wheels first, camber rods and drag links connected and then the axles. The rear end as a whole unit could be installed if it were more than just me.
I remade the rear shock mounts to make the car a little higher. I wasn't comfortable with how low the car was and how it put loaded the u-joints on the rear axles. Honestly, I see myself adding at least another 1" to the rear in the future but as it stands currently it'll work.
I reworked the inlet to the water pump with a cast 90° elbow. I'll need to work on the plumbing a bit more when I cross that bridge but it shouldn't be too bad.
I remade the low control arm mounts. The first design I never really liked but it worked at the time. As things progressed one mount got damaged and surface rust propagated in areas that needed welding. I made these mounts from one piece of 10 ga. CRS. A quick bend in the brake, some welding and they are ready to install. These were actually really fun to make and install. TIG welding these in place was a challenge but added to the thrill.
One of the major issues I had with the front suspension was too much shock angle change through the travel. Even though, in theory, the suspension will only really cycle through a fixed range when the vehicle is at ride height it was something worth addressing. I also needed a bit more height too so this was a great way to kill two birds with one stone. I made these mounts to allow a little adaptability to whatever the car is going to be used for. I may move the eyelets inboard a bit more but we shall see how these work.
While this is all mocked up I'll need to measure for my new steering rack and figure out sway bar ends. I plan to start plumbing everything soon. I need to still mount my air tanks and valve block which I will do tomorrow.

Me too! Good luck with that lol. You have to take half the car apart to get the plugs but that's just how it goes sometimes.

I started getting things mounted, the air tanks are in position and the titanium is polished and ready to bend up. I mocked up the Z06 brake calipers with the new wheels and I'm waiting on the brackets from Van Steel to arrive.

I wanted different wheels all together but didn't really want to deal with possible fitment issues. I was able to get a good deal on those so that's what I ended up with.

I was able to get a few notable things done so far. I mounted my MAP sensor on a small bracket I that bolts to the back of the head. I built the drivers side exhaust section and heat shield. I need to complete the passenger side today but haven't got that far yet. The coil packs are mounted as well.

Both sides of the trans tunnel and all the firewall pieces are trimmed and fitted. Overall, the fit and finish on the trans tunnel is okay, there's still a bit to be desired but it gets covered mostly with the seats and people. I designed the seat brackets too, all once piece and they get folded on the mag brake and then their seams welded together. I made little tabs to hold panels in place and once those were welded in place I started adding patina to the panels. There's more stuff going on but overall it's going smoothly.

Semi productive day, it's now rounding hour 22 and it seems like I didn't get much done. I disassembled, cleaned one side of the front suspension and replaced the upper ball joint. It got dark before I was able to get to the other side. My Woodward Steering rack came yesterday and I needed to build mounts for it. I had to temporarily modify my Bankski steering arms to work for now. It took a long while to do a few simple things it feels like. The steering rack mount is made and welded in. It was a challenge to design them since they need to be strong, clear the air and brake lines that run along the front subframe. My lug nuts also came in too, purple might seem a bit outlandish but, I think it works well with the copper color rim. I did also trim the trans tunnel exit for the driveshaft. Tomorrow, I need to build a flange to mate the tunnel to the rear of the interior panels. I also have the pleasure of trying to neatly tunnel through my upper shock mount for my steering shaft to connect to the column.
Off camera stuff: I worked on my '30 Model A for a while and built a new front seat for it. I recently got it running (sort of) and found that it has a few stuck valves. It's soaking in oil but I'm hoping it comes loose without pulling the head or the manifolds.

The bead rolling makes the panel fairly strong as does the riveted flanges on the edge. I used riv-nuts to provide a mounting point for the four screws. You could send me your radiator and fan and I could make something for you. Other than that just good lay out and design principles will make an effective part.

I used this software in the link below. The body was placed on a jig, drivetrain and suspension components mocked up and then data points were taken. I had a forum member help me with the optimum placement of the LCA/UCA mounts and rack placement. Overall, I think I ended up with a good starting point for this car.

The fuel system is pretty straight forward, it's a standard return style. What you are seeing isn't a surge tank, it's a surplus NASCAR canister pre-filter to catch any junk before the fuel pump and there's another finer filter upstream of the FPR.

I made this bracket to mount my Ride Tech controller in an area behind my interior panels. The brake line shop whipped up these cool purple and black smoked brake lines that match the look of the car. I did sand blast the intake and valve covers. I applied the slate black patina on the intake and valve covers and got this cool dark cast color.

So this took forever. Originally, I planned to only use a small diameter tube and different steering u-joints but things changed. Instead, I opted to use 3/4" weld on steering ends which means the opening in the shock tower needed to be much, much larger. I got a piece of 1.75 DOM and began to open up the holes. Several hours later I had three holes and a piece of tube that fit. It's a good feeling to sit in the car and feel the rack work. Still a lot of work left to clean up that shock tower area but it's been solid forward progress.
As a side note, I recently got my 1930 Model A Tudor running and driving. That's why the updates have been spotty lately.
