So I'm sure that some people might not take interest in this build but I saved a car that was headed to the scrap heap. I started with a Belvedere and searched for some sort of upgrades to make the perform a bit better like a brake swap or better suspension stuff. I ended up swapping the suspension with C4 Corvette stuff front and rear. To top it off I found a Gen 1 Viper motor on craigslist for $600. I'm not passing this off as a traditional build by any means, however, I want to leave the car as original looking on the outside as possible. I guess this falls into the "restomod" category. I've been making time lapses of progress.

Welcome to the site. Very cool build. It's fun seeing all of the "alternative" cars on here lately. BTW, C4 'Vette suspension and a Viper engine qualify as PT in my book.

I ended up not using the original dash, I couldn't stand the thought of cutting it up. I just used 1/4" round bar and some 22 ga. metal to cover it with. The dash took me a few days and there is still a lot of little stuff I have to finish on it. Eventually, I'll cover it in suede and body work/paint the rest. I pretty much did the same thing on the trans tunnel which will be removable. The Gen 1 motors have the thermostat housing on the back of the motor so in the case of needing to service I can get to it. The swap was pretty straight forward, oddly enough the Viper motors use Dodge truck motor mounts which car easily adaptable to almost anything. It should be noted the viper motors are uniquely large. Also, some of the parts interchange, I currently have a Gen 3 intake on a Gen 1 motor with Gen 2 tube headers. You can get most of these parts cheap on eBay.

I finished the passenger side floors, unfortunately my real job will be consuming my life for the next few months. So don't expect updates until like March/April. However, I can still answer questions if you have any. I leave you with these last pics until my return. What you can expect to see after the next few months is the rest of the parts I need to continue with this project. To continue I'll need to find a fuel cell and pump, steering column, brake pedals(might end up making some), seats and harnesses, shockwave's and air management, finally is an I.S.I.S power system. I want to do this as well... http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/h...s/viewall.html I figured since I already have a bunch of high tech stuff going on I might as well make it as safe and stable of a platform as possible. I tend to get carried away with these projects so it might end up being a full on race car that I drive on the street. We shall see.
Thanks for reading

This week I received my steering column in the mail so I could press on with the pedal placement and the seating configuration. It's an tilt/telescopic unit out of a C5 Corvette. Eventually I'd like integrate the ABS/Active Handling unit from a similar car into this project.
To start I had to cut the firewall/floor out of the car to make room for the Tilton pedals. I had an issue with the placement of components, to include the seats, pedals and steering wheel, the problem was the with how the car "fit" me I guess. I had to mess with it for a while but I figured everything out. After all that I had to make a few brackets and mounts to hold everything in place, it was really straight forward. Overall, I think the setup is really comfortable, but it's an odd feeling sitting so high up. I really have no choice in the matter because of the height and length of the windshield and hood respectively. All that is left is finish welding everything and build a small set of gussets for the upper support that connects to the body.
A side note also.. I've finally got my CNC Plasma table working, but I still like the satisfaction that comes from making parts by hand. I'll save the table for when I need to make a bunch of the same parts, like the seat brackets.

I spent the day doing the center console... It took me a while to just get this far. I had to clean and organize the shop today, it never seems to fail that after only a few hours of working the place looks a bomb went off. I really didn't know what I wanted to do with this console I kind of just free formed it. All I wanted was something visually stimulating. After a few more hours of working with it I should be able to get it looking way better.
I'll briefly explain the process I went through to get the basic design. I measured everything like ten times and tried to visualize how I wanted it to look. I was shooting for something that was simple but had the circa 1950s futuristic feel with out over powering the dash. So that seems like a lot more than what you really see here, but hey everyone needs some inspiration! Anyways, I don't have a brake right now so I used my slip form roller to add a radius to the console.. which makes another set of problems. The roller is only 37" long and I need a console that was about 41" long thus the splice piece. Since all of this will be removable to service the rear of the motor ( i.e. the thermostat housing and rear spark plugs) and various other components I had to make it in several interlock and overlapping parts. In some of the photos you'll notice that the rear of the console has a gap between the body brace, yet the front "tubes" touch the upper rear engine cover. The plan is to be able to lift and slide the console back to remove it. Also, it's going to function as a main support between the two sections of flooring. I'll build some hidden braces that are constructed similar to an aircraft rib. I suspect that this will be more than rigid enough since it's constructed out of 18 ga steel plus the addition on the internal supports should yield plenty of strength. The remainder will be filled in sheet metal which you should see in the coming days or at least by the weekend.

Wow, unbelievable work. I scanned through the pictures before i read, i knew instantly by how far back that engine was set back (and the transmission) that it had to be a viper v10 haha.. I love the idea of trying to keep it stock appearing from the outside, great fab work with the tunnels and the floor, cant wait to see more. Good luck on the build!
Ps: i just started watching the time lapses, very cool!

I should probably include a few pictures of the outside of the car and the suspension swap. It might help since a little fancy metal work on the inside doesn't really make cars go fast and handle well on the track. I've spent the last few months doing as little as possible to the outside. The only real mods I've done are a roll pan which will continue into a full belly pan later on. The front and rear suspension was a learning experience for sure. The rear subframe was pretty simple however, it was a challenge to try and fit those wide ass wheels under the car. I ended up cutting the inner fender wells and liners out so I could make room. Luckily, the trunk was all rusted out so it wasn't a totally loss when I had to cut it out for the rear end. With the front I just made new stubs out of 2x4 box tubing. Right now they are a little long, I wanted them long so I could connect them to the core support and have something to mount the swap bar to. Eventually this car will get a full set of Shockwaves and I'll dump the 'vette springs and shock set ups.

I didn't realize early on how far back it was really going to be until I cut the firewall and set it in. That was the first "Oh ****!" moment we had on the project after that it started to get challenging in a fun way. I just hope it is fun to drive! Thanks for watching and there will be more to come soon.

I know that all too well. Seems we think a little bit alike. I'm using Gen 3 Viper suspension, Gen 2 eng/trans, Gen 4 hood skin, Gen 3 buckets and pedal assembly (planning something from each generation in the build, even the new one), RideTech, ISIS, MiModHP, ... I can relate to the fun challenges. I'm still working through a steering rack challenge on my build. Requires some creative engineering but we'll get there. I really like this build though and will definitely be following along.
I like to Gen 3 intake swap. I'm going to swap the entire upper half to Gen 4, change the cam, boom, 600 HP. Love the motor though, but yeah, it's HUGE!
Good luck with your build.

Today, going to the shop was one of those last minute ideas I had in the day. I get stressed out with work most days so this is a good way to unwind and be creative. Plus every day I don't work on the car is another day I don't get closer to driving it. I made these two filler piece that took me a few hours. I guess I'm at the point in project where I'm not in a massive hurry to get this done. In a way it's like crossing the desert, you just need to move fast enough to make progress but so fast you get burned out before the end is in sight. The passenger side fought me the whole way it seemed like. That being said I need to make a 3/4" filler piece to go along the bottom and two at the top of both sides. All and all it was fun and I'm especially pleased with the way it is turning out so far. The biggest issue I see so far is the headers being to close the tunnel it's self and burning the paint or leather that is going to cover it eventually. I want to order some Clecos and more aircraft stuff to make this project a bit easier. All of this will be attached to the floor with nut plates and gang channel. I hope it can be a load bearing piece... like I said I hope.
A little background about myself, I learned a some of this metal working stuff like 7 years ago while I was in the USAF. We didn't cover tools like planishing hammers or welding just basic aircraft repair and fabrication. I never really got to practice any of it while I was in the military. As this project goes on it jogs my memory as to how things work or a cool way to do things. A quick segue for those who watch the time lapse below, you'll notice a shaped block of wood I'm using instead of striking the metal directly. The wood is more pliable than the metal hammer and doesn't dent as much. It's also got various shapes on it to make it an all in one type tool. I'll fine tune as time goes on. That was one of the things I learned about in training but kind of forgot about until a few days ago, hopefully I didn't forget too much and can continue to get better as time goes on! Thanks so much for watching and the comments!

Yeah I do that too sometimes except this time it was an odd shape that was a little larger than I'm used to. I'm still short some tools that would have made this a whole lot simpler. Eventually, I want to buy a Pullmax, a foot shear and a brake with those I could be way more efficient. Thanks again for viewing stay tuned for more!

Fantastic project! It looks like you can put a whole 69 Camaro in the interior of that car! I have to say Thank You for saving some old iron, I see cars like this in Pick A Parts and it makes me sad knowing its going to be destroyed.
Hopefully I'll see it sitting out front of Jockos one day!

I've gotten thousands of views on there and only a few comments. I thought being such an old oddball car it'd find a special given the blend of the old and new. I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a lot of bitter old men who are jealous that a younger person can do more than they can even imagine lying about. The project is a better fit here and I feel welcome for sure! Thanks again for the interest and more to come soon.

I've been waiting weeks to finally get my CNC table working correctly, the first thing to cut you might ask? How about some fancy seat mounts? Deal. So I've had these designed and did a few minor tweaks before I cut and welded them.
These were constructed out of 10 ga. C.R. steel and is fairly light and stout.
Enjoy!

I made a quick time lapse of something I was able to make on the CNC table today. If it seems like these projects coming off the table are moving at an alarmingly fast rate it's because I've had the software and time to design all of these parts for months, however, it's only been until recently that I've had the actual table running.

So the way the floor was designed was to have the console as a structural member. In order to mount the console to the floor I made these flanges that hold to the floor via bolts. I was able to find some "gang channel" in my storage stash, it has floating nut plates so the holes don't have to be in perfect alignment. In order for all of this to work I have to drill like 160 something holes which I'm not looking forward to. Before this is complete I need to cut a few braces that go inside the console and trim about an 1" off the end so it is easily removable. Sorry if this post is all jumbled and random... I've been up for way to long. I'll get more pics of it on the console and in the car. The other pics are of the steering columns that I did a few weeks ago but I thought I'd share it. Also, thanks for all the props btw I'm glad you guys like the work!
Here is a time lapse of the braces getting cut out.

It's been a pretty busy week at work, but I've made a little progress I suppose. I did manage to cut and then weld the flanges that will attach the console to the floor. I need to still rivet the gang channel to the floor and then drill 106 holes for the bolts to mount everything together. I'm going to try and take tomorrow off of work so I can start to get a little bit further before I start traveling for work again. After this is done I'm going to focus on mounting the seats and trying to figure out what I want to do with the dash. I'd take some suggestions on what you guys think would look good in regards to the dash it seems like it stylistically it's lacking.

Not to get off track but this plasma table thing is kind of cool.. I made a couple of these for the guys in other shops near by to put on their tool boxes, overall I think they are 9" or 10" tall. Maybe I could make a business card holder out of them or something... definitely an attention getter. Thanks for reading guys!

After a lot of set backs I was able to get this console bolted down. There's like 106 holes and I'm only part way done, I'll have to finish the internal braces later once I get more time. I had issues laying everything out for some reason after numerous attempts I decided to postpone the idea until later. I still get a bit of deflection in the floor however, I will continue to work to get this resolved. Aside from the front floor I still need to finish the dog house and seam weld everything. All I know is this car is going to be bad ass when it's all done.

I made this little blister panel today so the headers wouldn't be so close to the console. I always worried that dynomat, header wrap and ceramic coating wouldn't be enough to keep the heat from burning up the carpet. I'll have to make a similar yet bigger one for the passenger side except it's going to be way more complicated of a piece to fab. To get the shape I used a planishing hammer with a 1" radius die and a wooden buck to form the edges. I'll have to make a small patch piece for the upper corner but, this side has a while to go before it's complete. Thanks for reading...

This side was a little different for me I like the plain blister panel but, I wanted people to know that there was two cylinders stuffed inside of the car. Honestly, it doesn't even matter because it'll all get covered in carpet one day. Everything else is the same 22ga. formed on the planishing hammer with a few handmade wooden tools to finish some of the finer details. I guess you can't really tell the finished quality from the pics but, it's really smooth and looks good... I'm not sure if I'm really sold on the over all shape. I just need to add some small filler pieces on both sides to finish this out. I'm still not sure if I want these welded to the whole console just because it's going to be a pain in the ass to remove the console if it's super long.
Thanks again to Carl for stopping by and checking the project out!

So guys I'll be traveling for work for the next few months. I'll still post updates while I'm gone but, there won't be any tangible progress on the car at all. I hope to be getting some air ride and other suspension stuff, a fuel cell and a radiator. Unfortunately, this car isn't my primary focus since I'm trying to start a company too. While this car plays a large role in this company as an advertisement of my abilities I need to purchase some more equipment to help take my skills to the next level. I'm trying to find a Pullmax or other nibbler type machine so I can get serious with metal forming. In my area right now I'm not sure of anyone who can do any custom metal work or form parts from scratch. Anyways that was a glimpse into my life there will be more in the future...

Just trying to sort a few things out while I'm traveling. One of them is instrumentation I want to be able to have a GPS speedo, critical engine data in one handy location. I thought it'd be neat to have a a data logging ability for various vehicle stresses via load cells and such. The next is which shockwave will fit inside front C4 Vette suspension. In about a month or so I'll be able to get back to it for a few weeks and then I'm on the road for the end of the year. I need to buy a Pullmax so I can finish all the metal working on the car. Hopefully, by next summer I'll be able to start and drive this beast!

your fab work is fantastic, and I think this is gonna look awesome!! How the heck did you score a viper engine for $600???? oh and the time lapsed videos are neat, thanks.
Those timelapse videos are great instruction for those of us that have ambitions to fabricate, but don't have the opportunity to see others doing it. Thanks for doing them!
My friend and I religiously scour craigslist, junk yards and pawn shops for tools, rare parts and all-around good deals. We just so happened to find this motor for sale one weekend in Vegas. So we piled into the truck and away we went to scope our possible score. It was quite the site I'm sure, an early 2000s S-10 with a Viper Motor covered in pine needles and leaves driving through Vegas. We had an issue trying to find a machine shop who was interested in taking this on. The person (D i c k Allard Racing Engines) who I ended up using built early blown fuel motors for his own top fuel and funny cars and didn't flinch at cracking this thing open.
The long and short of it is the thing is brand new looking outside and in. Even in spite of the fact that it was used and abused when it was in its original home. With massive amounts of sludge, worn main bearings, two burned valves and a bad piston/sleeve combo, while it sounds like a lot of work it wasn't really all that bad. Being a wet sleeve block installing new sleeves wasn't a big chore. The big chore came from trying to source the O-Rings for the 10 reconditioned sleeves he installed. Roe Racing was able to supply us with those, but it took some arduous searching to figure that out. The heads were sent out to fix the worn valve seats, install new valves (which are expensive) and an area in the combustion chamber that had been damaged by the pulverized valve seat as the motor chewed and spit it out. The heads arrived shiny and new but, no delay was made to get them bolted down with stock head bolts and Cometic MLS gaskets. After it was all said and done the only reused stock parts were the cam and lifters, crank, flywheel and balancer.
I'm not going to lie, while I'd love to film everything in HD and make a super cool video journal for you guys to follow. I can't edit video nor do I have the time to if I could. I think the time lapses will reign supreme for a while longer until the progress I make is something you can watch in video form. Me shaping metal for four hours isn't something you guys would really want to watch. Once I get home I want to get a dedicated iPod Touch to film all that stuff with. Since my iPhone is always doing double duty it makes it hard to shoot time lapses and receive text/calls.
Until next time... Stand by to stand by
Matt
For anyone interested in using any Viper stuff these guys are great to work with. They've got used parts galore if you call they can find it for you. The best part is they will make deals if you buy in bulk like I did.

Awesome build, wish I had the time and garage to do something similar.
I bet you could do this in a normal sized two car garage if you managed your space. I don't organize often enough so I find myself tripping over things.
In the past with other builds I put everything else first and the build second. This time around since I want to start a business doing this kind of work this comes first. Originally, this car was for my then fiance until she realized this car was taking over our lives. I guess that kind of dedication is self-destructive but, her absence has really helped me take this project to the next level. I guess what I'm trying to say is... if you want something enough you make time, and in this case space for it.

Hey Gang,
So just a few updates for this build so far. I get back to Cali this weekend and I can't wait! I've kind of had this plan in the back of my mind to redo the front suspension since I don't really care for the way it looks. One major thing is the way the wheels are positioned in the fenders. I didn't have the CNC Plasma running when I started this project, however, since my shops abilities have grown I would like this project to keep up. Right now I plan on building a fixture on my table so I can do it all off the car. To complete this I need to buy a set of Shockwaves and a sway bar set up. One additional benefit is I can have the motor sit a little more level. The viper motors use a center sump and initially some concern was raised about the roughly 6º incline it sits at now. If I can get the motor to sit flatter it would also lower the CG a few inches. The only thing I see stopping me right now is steering rack on the Vette suspension, which I could move maybe 3/4" or so and won't mess up the geometry too much. The rack has to move because the harmonic balancer (dampener or w.e.) sits just above it right now. I'll cheat the rack forward and the motor back some more. It'll all work out in the end.
Previously, I mentioned something about buying a Pullmax. With that I could really start to do more over-the-top custom sheet metal stuff. The, and I hate even saying this out loud, Harbor Freight planshing hammer has been good me. It's time to get with the big boys and start using real tools. A few months ago I started buying up stuff to build an english wheel too. I found everything on eBay from Hoosier Profiles and man I must say their stuff is top notch! All I have left is to buy an upper wheel, cut, build and fine tune the wheel. So basically everything!
Thanks for reading guys!

Quick update for you guys. I'm finally back in town and just waiting on some parts to come in. Before I can go whacking away at the car again I need to get my Pullmax set up since the car sits directly in front of my bay door. In spite of some pretty intense jet lag and being super run down from traveling for so long I did manage, with the help of some energy drinks, reorganize my shop. The problem I keep running into is the shape of my shop. It is a "P" shape so it doesn't lend itself well to having the stuff I do. Recently, I tried to move to a two bay rectangular shop but I was beaten to it. Perhaps once the Plymouth is done I will move. The Pullmax will be next week so look for more updates and photos starting then!
Thanks for staying tuned!

Hey gang,
Finally made some progress after my weld table top showed up. I started the day by cleaning the factory GM parts which took forever. Afterwards I started mocking everything up and building supports so the cross member. I forgot to take pics of the progress I made after last pic. I'm going to try and make as much of it as I can out of one flat sheet of metal. It'll look bad ass I think. I'm tired and I'm sure this doesn't all make sense.

I think I'm going to end up cutting the frame back a little bit further then planned. This should result in new motor mounts to help lower the CG a little. This project is getting to the point where I'm running out of stock frame to modify. In retrospec I should have just built a whole chassis... I guess it's not too late for that.
Anyways back to the updates, I made identical tabs to prop the lower control arm up the right height just as I did with the other side. I want to make this cross member out of plate so it will be easier for me to fab. I still need to figure my upper control arm mounts and mounts for the steering rack. The biggest issue I am having right now is narrowing the steering rack. I haven't figured out how to do that and I would be willing to trade work if someone on here could do it. This week look for more updates and progress!

I an effort to make some real, tangible progress I spent a few hours mulling over how to figure how to make this new suspension arrangement to work without it looking cheesy and lame. I started taking as many measurements as I could to build this in my graphics software. Holy crap it took me forever! Every time I got a few minutes into the design I'd realize I needed something else. The biggest challenge is going to be the steering rack placement with a quick eyeball comparison the cross member I build should be able to locate it in the same spot as the factory member.
After measuring everything like a billion times I started moving on to finding away to build everything from. I used little stanchions with the same size as the frame to emulate the exact location where I plan to cut the frame at. From there I only made the lower part of the frame rail so I could get my measurements (yes more of them) for the cross member. It was pretty much down hill from there, much like everything else I wanted to make it as stylish as I could. I think it looks pretty good, weights about the same as a factory member and is super stiff!
Pics below you guys (and gals maybe) stay tuned for the next installment.

You say narrow the rack... You need the rackto be narrower or you need to have shorter inner tie rods? I know I have seen on some of the KIT forums where they will cut the inner tie rods and then re-cut the threads to narrow the rack that way. That way they can use the same outter tie rod ends and then have a narrow/shorter overall rack.
53Vipette
09-11-2012, 10:05 AM
It was my understanding you have to narrow from the center out so you can mitigate any bump steer issues. I'm not sure how true that is though...
85coupe50
09-11-2012, 10:27 AM
Right, I see. You want to keep it the same inner tie rod length as to not disturb the bump steer. Maybe look into a flaming river rack. Maybe they sell something that is a custom length as to not throw your bump steer off.

I've seen this before... They seemed to do it with no problems it gives me hope that I can do it. A mustang II rack could work if it's a front mount like corvette one. Maybe I'll just order a few different racks off of eBay to see what one fits best.

On paper, at the most basic level, if you were to draw a straight line through the pivot points of the upper and lower control arms, the inner tie rod pivot point would fall on that line. Again, that is a basic, general guideline. In reality there is more to it than that and I don't understand it well enough to be able to explain it adequately.
Again, In theory, if you narrowed the control arms 4", you could narrow the rack 4" (measured at the inner pivot points) and it would work and likely drive just fine. This will not give the optimum suspension geometry, however. A common problem with the stock corvette uprights is the height of the steering arms requires the rack to mounted high in the chassis and can causes problems with mounting the engine......just something else to think about.

Donny,
If you look at the way it was before that was the biggest issue I had. I thought about running the rack lower and then maybe building some spacers to drop it down a bit. The spacers would go on the outer tie rods. I'd have to switch everything to heim joints. I've seen a few cars set up this way I'm not sure if it's correct but it seems to work. I've done some research about "improving" the geometery of the Vette stuff and all I could come up with was the most popular thing was to add more caster and camber. I think the car will be okay in it's current configuration... that's what I hope at least.

Drivers side upper control arm mount I still need to finish weld all of this together. Also, to be noted I'm going to reinforce the area around the slotted holes with either another piece of 10 ga. or 3/16" I have decided yet. The piece will wrap around in a sturdy, creative visually appealing way.

I used a truss style design to help lighten and make the part more intriguing to look at.

From the top now. I think overall it looks pretty bad ass. It weights maybe 50-60 lbs at this point.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
The large open area on the outside of the upright will be filled with a piece of material that the shock mount will weld to. I'm waiting on my shockwaves to arrive at this point.

To give you an idea of what a stock C4 cross member looks like. If anyone needs this I have this one and another with all the random hardware, leaf spring.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
So what is left for this... I still need to figure out what I'm doing about a steering rack and sway bar. It's been recommended that I should have built everything around the rack but this is the first time I've ever done this so it is what it is.

Quick update... I spent a few hours at the shop yesterday evening dividing my time between finishing a customers project and the lower control arm mounts on the sub frame. Currently, my mind is mulling over various things I need to do before I can put this suspension on the car. The big thing is I'm waiting on parts still so I can continue to move forward, I think I found a steering rack and a bad ass set of brembo's for the front brakes.
Stay tuned for a few cool things coming your way like a set of brackets for Brembo 6 Piston Calipers to C4 spindles/hubs and an adjustable shockwave fitment tool.
Sorry for no pictures yet. Look for those soon too!

In a few hours there's a swap meet I'm going to that I'm bringing my cross member to just help show people what I can do. The only major changes to the part is I added my company logo to the front, added beef up plates to the U.P.A mounts and spent a few hours welding, blending and sanding everything smooth. For the beef up plates I rendered the plates based on my current UCA they will get plug and edge welded all the way around I managed to score a set of, brace yourself for this, 6 Piston Brembo brakes for a fair price. All I need to do now is build brackets for them and hope they clear my current wheels!
Still waiting on a steering rack and my shockwaves to come from a fellow forum member.

Looks great. I love your approach to the frame, its a nice change to the standard square tube.
I built a 69 Camaro back in 99 and used the C4 suspension all around.
I built my own front subframe also. What rack are you going to use? Do you know the dimensions of the stock C4 rack VS the one your going with?
Have you changed the overall width of the front or is it still the same?
I know you have the stock crossmember so you can check that.
I used a Saturn steering rack when I built mine, it was a rear steer right hand drive model that I installed in front of the wheels and flipped it side to side so that it would work.
I can't remember the specs or the part numbers but I was shocked that the local warehouse had 10 in stock since they are right hand drive units and we sit on the left here in Canada.
What car are the Brembo calipers from? I would love to do that on mine.

Keith,
The Brembo's are off of a Porsche Cayenne S (still waiting to hear back from the forum member on shipping them) and as soon as I get them I will start to make the brackets. Perhaps you could be the first for a set of prototype mounts since it'll be a while before I can test them myself. The front end was narrowed about 2" so I didn't have to mess with fenders on the car and if my calculations, measurements are correct the geometery shouldn't be too adversly affected. There is a rack off of a mustang that will work for what I need with the inner tie rod pivots being about 21" apart it'll have to be a nonstandard length rack.
Thanks for the interest!

So... Basically, going to be moving the shop and building another chassis jig (I left the last one in Vegas) and a new chassis for this car over the next few weeks and months. With 7.5' of original frame left it seems foolish to waste my time building around it. The plan is to build a new rear sub-frame to match the front and use round DOM and square tubing to make new frame rails. It's a mild set back but not to worry it'll be well worth it I think. My Shockwave's and Brembo's got here recently! I need a tubing bender, notcher and some quiet time in the shop so I can get started on the new chassis and jig.

Hey gang,
So while this build took/is taking a brief hiatus for a solo shop to shop move, installation of lighting and power outlets and preparation for an extended through-the-holidays-and-New-Year Business trip it will continue as soon as I get back. My new lighting arrangement consist of two 1000 watt HID (metal halide) and four 100 watt HID (also metal halide) with two over my drafting table and two over my work bench. I plan on trying to get two more for a total of eight (I have two waiting to be installed) 100 watt lights around the edges of the shop. While the two 1000 watt lights provide enough light to full cover the shop in light I noticed that today while I was looking for something in my tool box the shadows cast made it difficult to find small items easily.
Expect to see a chassis jig and chassis get constructed around February. I really need to buy a lift so I can pull the body and store it out of the way with my '37 Chevy underneath. While the shop looks really big it's about 1100 sq/ft, I included a rendering of the placement of everything so you guys can have some sort of scale of the place. I plan on buying a newer plasma cutter, a refrigerated compressed air dryer and plumbing the shop for compressed air lines. The days of extension cords and air lines laying everywhere are long gone.
Thanks for hanging in there!
Matt

I had a feeling this would happen...

In other recent event... A writer from website had emailed asking for a few details on the build. I obliged, responding with a fairly detailed account of what brought a project consisting of a '53 Plymouth Belvedere and a discarded Viper motor into fruition. We corresponded a few times and a final article was written, please take a few minutes and give it a read! Just a few more weeks and I will back in the shop trying to make some progress.
Thanks for tuning in again!

sweet article! Can't wait to see some more updates!
After the first of the year things should resume. I'm ordering a tubing bender, notcher and a 2 post lift soon so I can remove the body and start building the new chassis. I've been keeping my eyes open for a big surface plate for a good price but haven't had much luck as of yet.
I promise more updates soon enough! Thanks to the 13,000+ people who have read this forum hopefully once this thing is done some of you will get to see it in person.

So some updates for you guys... Since last time I posted here I have been ordered parts and tools so I can have enough stuff to mock and finish this thing during 2013. On the list is still to buy the rest of my air ride stuff and a fuel cell. I've also narrowed down the tubing notcher and bender I want (links for both below). The bender is cheap it's just the dies that get expensive quick. I also found a sweet deal on some Glodal West Del-a-lum bushings and new ball joints for the C4 UCA/LCA. One last thing is like 300' of tubing and some more CRS 10 GA. Steel plus the stuff to build my chassis jig! Stay tuned I promise good progress and pics as always!
I found that ex-NASCAR stuff is pretty cheap, has little use (maybe a race or two) and is really high quality stuff.
I picked up some Schroeder style sway bars and arms. I went with the same size bars both front and rear so I can tune things easier. I can order a dozen or so different sizes and swap them around without having deal with different sizes-

66Larkgs,
I was able to find a Mopar "Hot Rod" swap for the Viper motor, from what I can surmise it's all plug and play and deletes all the emissions stuff netting an additional 15 horsepower. Although, not a ton of extra power it'll do for now. It should be interesting to see how it handles the 3rd Gen intake and 2nd Gen Tube Headers, I'm assuming that those too will gain extra power but, it's going to be to the dyno to figure that one out. Worst case I'll have to get a Motec to run things.
Stay tuned for a full tube chassis and some bad news about the sheet metal work. I'm thinking most of the floor and center console will get thrown in the dumpster once I get back. I've spent that last few months reading a handful of automotive design books and it's become evident that a stiffer chassis is a must for a decent handling performance vehicle. Thus, the tube chassis and new sub-frame.

I've read different results on the Gen 3 intake. Let me know what you do to make it work because I'm interested in doing it on mine. Are you doing Gen 3 heads as well? That should net some nice results. I had been looking for the Hot Rod swap parts as well. The wiring harness is still available but the computer is not. I'm going to modify mine and have the computer worked over.
Where did you get the bearings for your sway bar, assuming that's what those are for? Thanks.

Will,
I just eBay'd NASCAR Sway Bar and they popped up. I bought both sets that were available however, one set was like $30 and the other $75 so be prepared to spend some cash if you want them. They do have Teflon/Derlin sets for much less which is also a good option depending on the amount of use. I still have to build a pillow block or something to hold them I guess. The plan is to (too? I always forget lol) make everything drop out from the bottom so I can swap bars at the track if I need too.
As for the wiring harness I can send you a copy of the blueprint I have from Mopar, it's an uncontrolled engineering drawing so its the real deal. I paid like $1000 for both the harness and compy when I found it on eBay, if you search the PN for the computer it still comes up from certain venders I'm not sure if they actually stock it though... No BS I had seen a few of them go on a Viper Forum for $50.. I couldn't dial the number fast enough because the person bought all of them, go figure. I didn't know if the Gen 3 heads would fit a Gen 1 block without some major work. The Gen 1 being open deck I wasn't interested in pushing things too far past stock. Nothing would be cooler than a full tube chassis with a TT Viper motor... We can all dream about running with the big dogs I guess :D
Thanks for reading and checking in guys!

Thanks Matt. I found some of the roller bearings at Port City Racing in Michigan for $30 a piece, just wasn't sure if there was another place that had them as well. I need to pick up a couple more for my rear bar and will be doing that soon.
If you can send me the blueprint you have that would be awesome. The harness can still be bought new direct from Mopar but unless they pop up somewhere, the computer is gone. I may be able to use that blueprint to work my own harness over a bit rather than spend $1k at Hot Wire Auto. If you can email it to me that would be awesome, wellis999 at gmail dot com. Thanks Matt!

Quick update... two more days and I'm back in Cali. Anyways I bought a tubing notcher (TN-250) and a bender (Rogue Fab link below). I tried to find a better used bender on Craigslist or eBay but I ended up being unsuccessful. Rogue Fab has a simple weld-up assemble kit and a bunch of dies for a really good price (less than the cost of most powered benders with no tooling)! It's air over hydraulic driven so it will be less work then the hand ratchet style. Not that I condone drinking while working with power tools or in my shop at all but it has a built in bottle opener too it just helps illustrate the level of detail in the product they build.
I will also be buying a Go Pro for better quality time lapses and HD video. I figure that plus my iPhone I should be able to do two different angles to help build a better picture of things happening in the shop.
One last thing.... if anyone in the area wants to come use these tools and before buying let me know.
Thanks for being patient and hanging in there!

Hey Matt,
Love the build so far! You are an artist with sheetmetal.
Just dropped it in the mail this morning. 175+ lbs of steel and machined 6061 billet coming your way! too bad you have to back track a little of your chassis fab, but glad to hear you will be making it out of a more rigid material/design.

Hey Matt, I got your emails and responded. Let me know if you get the replys, I have been having more email trouble lately. THe tube bender is a great idea, but I am not a fan of that style notcher. I like a rougher endmill on a bridgeport. Its a more concentric cut and its a bridgeport so you can do whatever you want on it. For what some of those notchers cost and a little more one can buy a used bridgeport.

I tired to win a Baliegh end mill notcher but I lost by a few dollars. I don't have the space for a Bridgeport right now, but right you are the mill would do a much nicer job. I did get the email so I'll respond in a day or two once I get settled in.

To answer your second question...
You can use these graphs the manufacture puts out... and guess.
http://www.schroedersteering.com/RateChtPDFs/78x43Graph.pdf
or you can do math.
If you'd like I could pm you the formulas which I have to look up in books I have in my shop. If you tell me some measurements of your set up I can help you.
I plan on doing some sheet metal work and taking it from there. The front end is going to get a bunch sheet metal work to incorporate a front splitter. I'm trying to keep the craftsmanship high and the tackiness low.
Thanks for the questions,
Matt

Today I did a few different things. I painted my tubing bender, bought consumables for the shop, ate some food, and oh yeah, I put the body on the chassis jig. In perpetration for that I pulled the motor and dropped the rear suspension. I had to hire someone for a few hours to help me since it wouldn't have been really safe to do by myself. Anyways, I was able to get the body just on the jig. I still need to square it up and brace the body. I'm not sure if I want to cut the floors out and strip the doors and glass.

The last of the boxes are trickling in still... Still MIA are the sway bars and the TN-250 notcher which is on back order. These arms are 4130 'Moly, I'm not sure how they are mounted but I think they are underslung. I noticed they have skid pads, I think, which on one set are well worn.
In other news I centered the body on the jig and need to start addressing bracing the body so I can cut out even more stuff. I removed the remaining trunk floor and the roll pan in the back. I got so tired of climbing through the fender well to get into to the car.
You'll notice too the fender well is as tall as the tire. I forgot that the body mounts were a little lower than the old frame so I had to build the stanchions up compensate. This week my new plasma cutter comes and that day I'll buy all my tubing too.
One last thing... The alternator on the Viper motor doesn't fit with the Gen 3 intake. So looks like some thick aluminum is my near future.

I had to lift the body up to get the wheels on the rear end. The car will sit a lot lower than before, however, I plan to raise it up a bit to have a normal amount of ground clearance. I still need to square and center the rear to the car and jig. The next several daunting tasks are getting the motor mocked up again and setting in the front subframe on the pads. So I think I still need to cut out the firewall and trim back the floors in order to get the motor to clear everything. Once these things are squared away I can get some main rails started and tie everything else in.
I ordered some new rear sway bars, I went with 43" wide bars instead of the 37" I had originally. The rear sway bar mounts are about that wide already so I thought that was easier than reinventing the wheel.
Thanks for staying tuned,
Matt

So after spending pretty much all day cleaning, cutting the floors out and centering everything. The phrase centering everything sounds inspecting but turned into an ominous task. Started at the front and went back and forth checking everything a bunch of times before I start making frame rails. I kept chasing the rear end around (lol) at first it was centered left to right but wasn't square then it was square but looked strange... So I went to the tail shaft was misaligned to the chassis jig. I just kept redoing everything until I got it figured out.
I took a fair amount of measurements to start cutting some suspension parts. I just set the shockwaves in the rear to see if they will start to clears some of the stuff around them.
The bad news is the front crossmember I made is too small, so I get the pleasure of making yet another one! Just what I wanted to do again! :D

So most everyone I knew today was watching the Super Bowl, I not being big on sports, was in the shop trying to piece together this frame. I started with a set of Anti-Squat brackets and just stared at everything. It took a little while but, I figured out how I would make this work. At first, I wanted to use just DOM tubing to make everything connect together with rails over the batwing to the main cross member. The main rails were going to be CNC cut and then I opted to just make everything over the rear out of 10 ga plate. The only tube in the rear will be cross braces and the addition wait over the rear will be welcomed I think. At the end of the day I have to balance the weight of a relatively heavy V10 against light tubing and forged aluminum components. I set the motor back a little further too, only to gain a bit more room for the front suspension stuff, I need to snake a steering rack and a sway bar up front.
If I had the money, time and some more tools I'd cut all of the frame on my plasma table.
I hope you weekends were eventful, I know mine was!

I just hate the way the seam looks on the tubing, it drives me crazy. However, I will say the seam is a good reference point to bend the tube with. The DOM doesn't have that so I'll have to be careful when I bend mine I guess. I just called on 1" x .095" DOM and it was like $2.50 a foot. I guess the best part of the price is that it's made in America. Thanks for the kind words!
Stay tuned for more,

Hey Matt,
When I used to do structural and misc steel we used to use a precision bubble level on the ends of the tube. The bubble level would be mounted perpendicular to the centerline of the tube on either side that way you would just bend the tube from the level position. It works really good when you start to bend long complex bends. I dont know if your bender is set up to bend in the horizontal or vertical position. It worked really good with DOM tube when we did it at school on frames.

I had plans of using a clamp on degree wheel or digital inclinometer to get my rotation right. The seam is a good starting point though for flat bends.

When you buy tube, buy one length of tube that is just barely big enough to fit over the size you want to bend. If you put a bend out of plane, put the bent tube on the ground, park a car on it, and tweak it with the larger tube you bought to use a cheater bar.
Man I could not figure out why your rear suspension trailing arm hanger was shaped so odd. Once I saw it in the car I realized why... 4 seater. Duh. It is nice following a build that has good fabrication and for once good photography.

Slight change of plans... I thought I could make most of this out of tubing however, I don't have notcher still have several weeks of waiting. Instead of waiting I gave into the temptation of having a perfectly good CNC table in the shop and once I get a good picture of what I want in my head I can turn out the parts I need in a matter of minutes.
I made slugs out of some 1" tube I had laying around the shop to brace the two anit-squat brackets together. I ground them smooth on the outside just for looks. The middle holes, though a minor miscalculation, became offset slightly. Under normal circumstances that would fine except now I have to hand grind all of the holes with a rotary file and angle cut all the tubing. For now I did two sizes so I could brace the center until I get time and material to do the rest.
Also not addressed in the planning phase was a way to weld the x-braces in place for the top. I could have cut it faster with the machine, but, **** happens. I used a cutoff wheel to slit it and then just welded it over. I did actually weld all of stuff inside it’s not just tacked in place. I metal finished those parts in preparation for closing out the anti-squat brackets. In the pictures you can see that I was jumping around from place to place as to not direct too much heat in one area for too long. I still need to weld most of that member and will do so once the up rights are fab’d and tacked in place.
On to the up rights. You can see I was able to get the four main pieces cut and now it’s just a matter of plating and welding it all together. They will be about 3.125” wide or 3 1/16” for you non-decimal types or if you like fractions, roughly 50% of the depth of the root. They start at 6.375” and taper up and back to a 2” radius, then spanning about 30” and rising 11”. From their current position they will get a flat truss brace tying the up right to the anti-squat bracket. To hold them together left to right I haven’t thought about yet. I was going to run a piece of 2” across the back and fill the rest in. I still have to get pinion snubber in there too. Something will come to me I’m sure.
As part of my New Year’s Resolution I wanted to use my MIG more, while I love my TIG to death it’s a time consuming process that gets expensive and tedious. I can make parts way faster with the MIG and since I plan on smoothing most of the welds down the name of the game is penetration. Am I right fellas?! I added a 30’ cord to the weld so I can use it all over my shop. From Miller it comes with a 3’ cord which is useless. Once I swapped that out I find it easier to use.
Stay tuned for more guys,
Matt

I started building the up rights for tomorrow (Sunday) so I can get the rear suspension squared up and continue on to the main rails. I bought another sheet of 10 ga CRS in anticipation of serious progress this week. This week I need to build ears for the bat wing and shock mounts. Eventually, I need to weld nuts into the uprights to mount the pillow blocks for the sway bar.
The last of my parts arrived this week too, including a TN-250 tubing notcher and a complete 43" sway bar set up (didn't take pics of that yet).
First, I cut DOM slugs to fit into each hole, I used my Uni-bit to ream the holes to the perfect. I took the opportunity to go a little deeper and on one side so the weld had some where to sit. I tapered and beveled the slugs so they were self centering in the holes. Once I tacked everything together I started banding the outsides. The time lapse is below for the top of the second up right. Overall I think there is 12' of weld seam for each upright, so that's 24' of weld for both lol. Once I get them metal finished they will get attached to the car.
I hope you guys are enjoying this build,
Matt

Holy smokes batman... Like two hundred views today on this forum. Thanks for those who stick with this and check in day after day, week after week. Once this car gets into a roller I wanted to have a meet and great at the shop, so some of you can come see it in person. I'll buy the hot dogs if any of you show up.
After like an endless amount of welding (what seemed to be, pun totally intended) and metal finishing I was able to get them welded to the cross member. I also installed my Banski Motorsports dog bones, but only on the bottoms. I have to cut off the bolts on the tops so I can get them out. With the C5 wheels on the C4 rear it doesn't leave much space between the tire and anti-squat brackets. So bolts facing opposite will hit the tire. While I was busy measuring twice and welding once, I missed this minor detail, so cutting the bolts will be in order. The Banski kit comes with all the spacers and hardware you need to install them into any C4 based suspension. Anyways, I am doing a two piece pinion snubber, an upper cross brace and rear bat wing drops.
It'll all make sense soon,
Matt

I built this trussed cross brace to hold both uprights together until the cage gets in. I am making a semi serious effort to reduce the total weight of the car and still make it functional, visually appealing. Even an attempt was made to trim down the banding on the i-beam portion with a coke bottle shape. I started with a quick rendering I made of the part after taking a few measurements. Then I started designing the outside shape, then the inside. I am trying to combine both the trussed look and the lightening hole style for a more vintage look. It's hard to build a 1950s style car with modern tech and not make it look too futuristic. I made some sweet drop down tabs in the back to hold the batwings to the uprights, those will get plated and smoothed out like the uprights did for a more finished look.
That's pretty much it until this weekend!

No it's just a CNC Plasma and it's home built table. I picked it up second hand for the original builder for a, what I think is, fair price. Tourchmate's stuff is really expensive, so much so, it wasn't an option for me to even consider. It has it's flaws but with a piece of equipment like this you learn to make them work for you and not against you. That being said with a powerful tool like that it's hard to not make everything out of flat plate and show off some trick looking stuff. The front and rear are going to be really fancy but everything in between will be all business!

Even with a frustrating delay I managed to get the cross brace welded, the rear bat wing brackets finished off and shock mounts tacked into place. Now I have to pull the sub frame out again so I can finish weld the everything still. I started laying out and cutting the sub frame. It's going to take shape over the next few days. I can briefly explain what took place today to help you guys get a better visual handle on things. The bearing plates were fun to cut, I'm still figuring out this new plasma cutter. It's super sensitive to changes in input voltage on my THC. Once I was able to cut dross free pieces again I was in business! The inside plate is .271" narrower than the outside one so the inside plate can be hidden by the surrounding plates. The areas on the bottom sub frame plate that are moving in a wider direction (this is getting confusing I know) will get bent to move the ends under the car so it can connect to the frame rails. The main frame is going to be "narrow" at 30" or so. There will be other means of connecting the car to the frame later in the project. I didn't see a reason to make things harder by changing directions drastically to get a winder frame.
This part of the frame will be the main support of the wheels and drive tran. The secondary parts will connect the rockers to the main rails and the third part will be roll cage will which will tie the upper part of the body to everything else.

There is a minor misalignment problem with the oil filter assembly and the sub frame. In case anyone was curious the rear of the frame rail is tapered from 4.125" down to 4". I ended up with that taper because I forgot to account for material thickness, which is .271" smaller. So tomorrow I need to get more material and start to weld the top on. Once that happens I will cut the brackets for the UCA/LCA and motor mounts.
Should be a blast!

Another 33' 2" of welding today was started today! Once I get everything welded I'll stick it back in the car to mock the rest of the stuff up. The truss piece on the side is functional, it's being used to gusset the joints on the outside. Plus it looks cool.

Cool project.I wish I could draw CAD Better so I could use my CNC plasma table as well as you.
Check a software suite used for graphics called Corel Draw. It's based on a 2D environment and has tons of little tools to make designing faster and simpler. I never did learn CAD programs well enough to make parts either.

After a harrowing weekend of 33' 2" welding and grinding it's in the car to continue the mock up phase! The jury is still out on the design, geometry and a few other things pertaining to the front end. I'm debating on cutting out the crossbar out all together and doing some tabs that locate the UCA on the car. I'm waiting for Banski to send my new tie rods so I can set the steering rack. Also, I thought about making the whole frame of the car from 10 ga steel plate, mostly just because I can. I would have those main rails cut on a shear and not on my CNC Table. This week and weekend I will make main rails (of some sort), square the rear to the front and start on motor and trans mounts.
Thanks for reading!

That front subframe looked HUGE and BULKY, then I saw it under the engine and next to the body. The nice close up photography was playing tricks on me. Beautiful work on that sheet metal.
What are your plans for tube? Upper suspension mounts? Bracing? Trans tunnel/X member?

I agree, it is monolithic looking, however, given its purpose to the car it needed to be strong and someone visually appealing. The squareness of the overall design coupled with smooth radii in the corners lends itself to be more intriguing to eye then originally thought. I have even had someone make a comment that it could easy be passed off as a solid machined chunk or cast piece. I am still trying to channel the inner essence of a race car straight out of the 50s. So things might look foreign until the car is almost done and everything is tied together design wise.
As far as tube work, I want to use it for the cage, radiator and fender supports. There will be some tube work to mount the car to the chassis and braces for the trans cross member. The fact of wasting DOM scares me a lot; at $3.50/ft mistakes are rather devastating to the pocket book. Just hang in there… The time for the bender is coming!

You're using a Gen2 short block right? If so, what did you have to do to make the Gen3 heads/intake fit/work? I recall hearing the holes almost line up and one or two have to be opened up, but thought something had to be done for the water passages. Not sure though.

The block is a Gen 1 with a Gen 3 intake and Gen 2 headers. We did nothing to make the intake fit, however, to make the headers fit there is a few simple mods you have to do. I have a time lapse showing how to do it. The Gen 1 altenator doesn't fit with the Gen 3 intake either so I get to relocate that soon as well!

Is putting an offset shifter in the car going to be enough to get it comfortable? Or are you going to have to make a pivot linkage?

I wasn't sure what to do with this, so what I will do is add some more to close out the sides. I guess removing some of the bulbousness from the look. The trans is now resting on the crossmember. Tomorrow will be motor mount day and then start getting the body mounted to the chassis.

So last week I was able to get a motor mount done. I still need to build the other side and recheck everything. Then on to body mounts! The other two pics are of an adjustable oil filter bypass. I'm not sure how to plumb it yet but two of the lines go to the oil cooler, I know that much :D .

They are for a 80s W150 Dodge Truck... I borrowed these from a buddy who is building a truck like that. The Aluminum parts are stock viper and the steel parts I made. If you need the Aluminum part let me know I have someone you can email that has a Viper Junk Yard.

The motor i'm putting in my 37 is from a 81 truck, I ordered a replacement and it came in as about half the thickness.. maybe i'll try a replacement from another supplier.
