Saw your car on the cover last night and quickly opened to read what your wrote about yourself. Cool article and great write up. I think Johnny could have taken better pics of your car but oh well still looks great. Just looks soooo much better in the sunlight. The pics really didnt do your car any justice of how nice it really is. Again, congrats on your job opportunity and the success with your 69 Camaro (Project Z069).

You got your PHR already?!?! Jeez, I just got last months issue a couple of weeks ago! Well, congrats Steve. It's a beautiful car. I guess I'll see it in a few weeks! Hey, who did you have to know to get your car in PHR?:poke:

Thanks.. here is the story behind that..

When I was applying for this job Super Chevy was recruiting me to be on thier May 2005 issue (ls1 issue).. I got this job and joked that if PHR wanted my car they owed me a cover since I had it set with Super Chevy..

Well, we pick covers based on what looks the best more than the car.. best angle, lighting, background and what is best for inserting cover blurbs. After we shot my 69 Johnny was not happy with the location (March AFB).. too many trees and too cluttered. So, we went with the red firebird esprit on the cover, it was a better picture and even though I was dissapointed it was better for the magazine.

Johnny surprised me by putting my car on the sub-cover (what we call the subscription issues). After all the work it was sure nice to see it on there. So, that is three magazine features and two covers in my life so far. I am due for my next cover in 2024.. ;)

Also, it was weird writing the feature since I was writing about my own car. Usually when you write about someone elses car you "talk it up" and I felt stupid doing that in this case. I also figured it was a good time to sort of introduce myself to the readers. I hope it came out ok, I am sometimes hypercritical of my own work.

Anyways, thanks for the comment and as Paul Harvey says.. "and now you know the REST of the story."

Yea, it is a lot like those cars that use names like "extreem g" yet have never been around a road track or probley even a corner very fast..

Actually I would have LOVED to take that car to buttonwillow but it sold too quickly.. dammit!! Sure did handle well on some of the local roads :D

Haha. Ouch. I'm frantically trying to beat that stigma. The Chevelle is getting dyno'd then track tested this weekend, but it's already been shot and written up for PHR. Crap! STOP THE PRESSES! :lmao:

Kris

Still got that dyno set for tomorrow?

KrisHorton
07-14-2005, 02:20 PM
Yup. 10am it's doing a pull with the current 2.5" exhaust. Then it get's a shiny new mandrel bent 3" system and another go on the dyno. It's being done up in Lancaster at R&E Racing. I'm excited and nervous. I'm low-balling my hp expectations. We're running kinda low boost right now since it's not intercooled. So I figure maybe 700, though that may be kinda high but who knows. Any guesses based on the specs I gave you?

Kris

Steve1968LS2

To the wheels? hmmm

wild ass guess of the day.. 572 to the wheels.. figuring pump gas, lower boost and no intercooler.. well actully I asked the magic eight ball...

KrisHorton
07-14-2005, 03:18 PM
Sorry about the lack of info, we're at about 10psi, running race gas or at least a mixture. I'd like to see about 600-650 at the wheels, but since it's not intercooled yet, I don't expect anything too stellar. We'll see though.

...looks like some extreme G-forces going on in that photo :bananna2:

I put 4500 miles on it during Power Tour, thats plenty of fast corners

But, lets not get into project names since your Corvette themed car had a Subaru paint job and pretty much no Z06 parts on it

Congratulations from me as well Steve. One complaint though: I think you shortchanged your own car in the writing a bit too much... you overcompensated! That car is badass and there wasn't enough of the romanticization of the car as an icon which I enjoyed so much in some of your other articles. Still, another fine article, and one helluva a car!

Well, the last thing I wanted was to sound like an arrogant sob that thought he was super bitchen..

The exercise was akin to getting up in front of tens of thousands of people and telling them about yourself.. there is a fine line between being humble and being a braggart..

Thanks for the compliment on everything.. I am still a newbie at this but it is fun and I like to think I learn more each time.

Steve,
Congratulatons on the cover!
Great article but who messed up the wording on p44?

"THE RESUME
My '69 Chevrolet Camaro was worth more that 1,000 words." :spank2:

I'm not seeing it.. whats messed up?

And Johnny wrote that.. my original one was..

RESUME CAMARO

Steven Rupp's '69 Camarow was worth more than 1000 words.

(and yes.. resume is spelled correctly :enguard: )

Damn!! I didn't write the deck.. but, I should have proof read it.. I guess our copy editor missed it.. I didn't even see it when David hinted at it.. now it JUMPS out at me..

Oh well.. can win them all... The Firebird Esprit has a typo as well but at least it is in the first paragraph and NOT the deck of the story..

I wouldn't worry about it. It's not that obvious. My copy still hasn't shown up! I want to see the feature.

Picked my copy up at the local speed shop. Excellent story idea--and it could not be more true. There can be no better job qualification than showing the ability to see a magazine quality car through to completion. :icon996:

Now let's see some ink on Bad Penny!!!

One of the sweetest looking Gen III engines I've ever seen. The brackets powdercoated the color of the car were a nice touch. Sorry to see it go.

Now you own a '68. You've joined the dark side. Now you're one of US!!!!!!

The b@stard stepchildren of the '69's. LOL!!!!!!

Sorry Steve, had to leave town before the homing pigeons could get my copy to me. I am sure it looks good though and will check it out when I get home.

Just read the story, well done. You did a great job covering all the parts and suppliers, which I think people find interesting. I like the way you handled the paint and body part of the project knowing what we on the board here know. I am assuming the second shop is the one you refer fondly too?
I remeber when I did some writing, the hardest thing was to talk about a product that disappointed me, did not perform up to expected, or a car, or a part of the car. It was always hard not to blurt out, So and So SUCKS!
Oh Yeah, and the car was nice too.
