View Full Version : 2010 LS3 swap- 69 camaro; wireing ?s

i'm upto my eyeballs with a LS3/tr 6060 transplant swap in a 69 camaro. the good and bad news is there's not a single wire in the camaro (basically an empty shell). the LS3/tr6060 is a 2010 camaro ss removal with complete factory ECM engine trans wireing and pedal.

1, is there a single kit that wires the 69 camaro and modifys the LS3's factory ECM, programming and wireing ( a one source vendor would be ideal).

2,or am i stuck wiring the 69 with an aftermarket kit in addition to modiyfing the LS3 ecm programming and wireing. (trying to avoid mix and match at twice the cost)

were/or who offers the best source for wireing and LS3 electrical mods to accomplish this transplant?

Eventually the car will be street legal but trailered to road race, autocross/scca events.

any advice experience appreicated.

Nice project. I've done a couple LSx swaps. On both I did a complete rewire of the car to go along with the LSx engine harness.
It's difficult to find what you need because there are so many variables in swaps.
If you have the capability I would suggest modifying your engine harness for what you need. Then get a heavy duty aftermarket harness, plan it out, and make it to fit your car.
Btwe, good to see another MO LSx.

Thx for the reply. This is my first LSx rodeo so ill use any input/experience from others i can gather. do you have a preference for a "heavy duty" aftermarket harness?

its personal preference, but if you have no wire to start with, try the painless kit, they offer a easy kit for the first gen, and the ls kits. I've used numerous painless kits, simply & every wire marked

I use the words "heavy duty" because LS alternators can put out over 200 Amps. If you try to run dual electric fans, fuel pump, big stereo, seats, windows, etc through a direct replacement made for a 63 amp alternator, you'll have problems.
Most good aftermarket universals can handle it.

thx Gary. BTW, have you had factory ecm's programed for your swaps? if so, who do you reccomend for reprogramming to get them to run? its going to be factory with headers, minus the cats.

I had both of mine programmed, but they were gen III ecus. You might want to get reccomendations on gen IV tuners on LS1tech swap page.

Rogue Racing in los Angeles does a great job with custom wiring harnesses for LS motors. They are also good engine tuners.

you will need his dbw harness kit

for the body you can use a Hwy22 AAW kit. no point in buying n update series if you are going to run power windows, ls swap, etc

well , i tackled the factory wire harness on my kitchen table and sent the ECM out for reprogramming. ive gone thru the harness and ohmed out every wire to assure i did not screw it up. i feel good about the harness and cant wait to get the fuel thing figured out. ive uesd ron fransis products before (not a complete car kit however) and found their quality was quite good. so im leaning toward ron fransis for the rest of the car.

hopefullyit'll start when i go for it this spring!

Sounds like you are into it already Joe - good for you. That's a great way to learn and you will have way more confidence in the finished product should you wish to make any changes or have to diagnose issues in the future.

That said, I think the key is what others have touched on here and looks like the route you are taking..... you can ALMOST treat the body harness and engine harness as two separate pieces of the puzzle. They have a couple things in common (pun intended) including ignition etc. A 3-wire hook-up harness from someone like SpearTech really takes care of everything and a kit like the Highway 22 from AAW would be my recomendation - only because I've had both and know they come both perfectly engineered, completely labeled, with everything you will need and allow for customisations. One harness does not rely on the other to any major extent (depends how you inter-mix them and/or how much of the ECU functionality you intend to use). For example - it's a good time to start thinking about how you will wire your dash and feed your gauges. Will you pull the temp/tach/speed etc from the ECU or run separate senders? Depends on the gauges you end up using and again - the body harness (AAW has a dash kit I think). Same for the fans - will you let the ECU trigger them or run a sender-driven controller/relay? Just things to think about while you are wrapping up your harness. Speaking of wrapping the harness - don't do it until you have the final layout you expect to keep. Actually fit the harness in place and make sure it all fits where you want to run the wires AND make sure you can get connectors through things like the firewall where and if necessary. Do all of that before you final-wrap the harness. It will make for a much cleaner installation with little to no extra work on your part.
