I'm swapping in a LM7 into my 77 El Camino.

I got in a rush and wasn't paying attention to my wiring when I disconnected the starter on the previous 305 that was in the car.

Could someone tell me what wire I'm suppose to connect to the small solenoid post?

At one time I thought I saw a thick purple wire, but now I can't find that. At another time I thought I saw some thick yellow wire. I'M LOST.....PLEASE HELP.

I also want to point out that the previous owner had switched the car to HEI on the 305 if that seems to make a difference.

Otherwise tomorrow I took off work and I will trace all my wiring back to the ignition switch.

Thanks!
Pat

I could DEFINITELY be talking out of my a** here so please take this with a grain of salt, but maybe it is better than just leaving you dangling.... I am looking at a wiring diagram for a 67 Camaro and the starter solenoid is supposed to have a 20 gauge yellow that goes to one side of the ignition coil, and the other side of the solenoid is a 12 gauge purple that goes through the bulkhead connector to the ignition switch. I only provide this because you said that you thought that you've seen a purple and a yellow... Don't know how the HEI would fit into the grand scheme.

Yeah I've read something like that as well. Since I no longer have a coil, I'm thinking its the yellow now, but I've never heard of a yellow wire going to the starter. Well I have two days to figure it out and get this beast running so......here I go!

Thanks for posting though!

Of course, you should verify this with a test light, but it should be the purple wire on the "S" terminal. That's your start signal to the solenoid.

Purple wire to the starter solenoid as stated above. It should be a "thick" wire compared to the others.
