I pulled my trans pan to replace the gasket & filter and I found this in the pan.
Anybody know what it is?
The trans is a chevy 350.

Looks like the clip that holds the speedometer gear to the output shaft of the tranny.

Does that clip on the inside of the trans?

It is located inside the tailshaft housing. It is the clip that holds the speedo gear in place on the output shaft. If it was inside your pan then the person that rebuilt your trans probably left it lying on the valve body and put the pan on. You can take your tail housing off and check the speedo gear to make sure it is secured with a clip. Pretty simple and lots of info on the web. There is no way for that clip to get into the trans pan from the tail housing.

I pulled the tail shaft off and I don't see how I could put a clip on there.
Does this this setup not need one?

Underneath the blue gear is where the clip goes. On the Id of the blue gear there is a slot for that clip. Right now since there is no clip on the gear it should be able to slide off right now. What you do is slide the gear to the rear of the shaft a few inches. That will reveal a small channel in the output shaft. No for the clip. There is the loop end of the clip that faces the front of the trans. Then there is a short side of the clip with a tang which rides in the channel of the output shaft and the long part of the shaft which will ride in the channel machines into the gear. Put the clip into the channel of the output shaft (closed end facing the front of the trans) and then slide the gear onto the clip. You will have to push down the long side of the clip for the gear to slide on. It is on now and cannot slide out of place.

Not a problem at all. Been through just a few transmissions to say the least.
