View Full Version : How do I keep fuel from sloshing out of filler neck?

I went road racing at Thunderhill Raceway this past weekend in my Nova. Had a blast!! But had fuel creaping out of my fuel cap. I have a Rock Valley SS fuel tank with internal fuel pump, sump and baffles. I also have the stock style filler neck and stock type locking gas cap. There is also a small vent tube attached to the filler neck. I installed an extra gasket in the gas cap that makes a tight seal with the filler neck. But obviously not tight enough to prevent gas from creaping out. What's the fix? One way valve? Removing the stock filler neck and attaching a more modern filler neck? Any suggestions? Thanks...

Sounds like you have a vented gas cap. Try swapping out the gas cap for a non-vented version.

I am running a non-vented stock 1967 Chevy Nova chrome locking gas cap. Anyone else have this issue when they first road raced??

I had a similar issue on my GTO. My problem was that the fuel was coming out of the tube that was attached to the vent. Once I installed a one-way valve in the vent tube all was good. Don't just plug the vent because it will cause problems as fuel levels go down. Your tank can even collapse.

I didn't plug up the vent tube, just left it in the original position-venting into a small hole in the frame. The fuel is definitely spilling out the gas cap. I think a call into II Much Fabrication will shed some light...thanks!!

Hopefully you find a solution. I've had similar problems with my 67 El Camino. One solution I saw was in the tank of a 79 El Camino I had. The filler neck went into the tank all the way to the opposite side of the tank. Another was in the tank of the 2003 Sunfire I had, it had a flapper valve where the filler neck entered the tank (it had a plastic tank). When I pulled the tank to change the fuel pump, none of the fuel could get past that valve. Made for an easy tank removal & install without spilling anything, which I am usually good at doing (the spilling part). Unfortunately neither of these solutions are easy to do that I know of on older tanks.

Hey everyone, I spoke to John Parsons today from II Much Fabrication. Had a very good conversation with John about the fuel slosh problem. It sounds like the cure is going to be his Gen 1 fuel vent system. Thanks to all that responded...
