View Full Version : 68 Mustang with 18" FR500 wheels

This was originally another thread "what 18's for my Mustang" but I decided to start a new one now that I have the black FR500's. Looking for opionions and comments. Should I stick with the Cobra R's or go with the black FR500's?
If I decide to keep the black wheels I will run a 245/40-18 tire on the front and a 295/35-18 tire on the back with a 18x10 deep dish version of the wheel in the pic.

I like the black wheels if you're going to keep the car a dark color! Looks good either way, but the black wheels look like they mean business.

I just gave my 295/35-18 tires a test fit and they fit great :woot: This is the absolute biggest tire that will fit under this car with the only mod being rolled lips. Now I can go ahead and buy the 18x10 +22 offset wheels for the back. The cool thing about this wheel is that it will fit without the spacers required with my Cobra R's :bananna2:

I'm interested to see how much clearance they have when the suspension is compressed - they look really close, but MEAN!!! :)
You definately need to figure out a way to fit a large front on there now!

They do look close...but the proximity to the q-panel is basically the same as I had with the 275/40-17 tire. If I place the tire about 1/4" from the leaf springs it looks too far in from the opening. So in the pics there is 1/2" clearance to the leaf springs. With the 18x10 +22 wheels and no spacer the outside edge of the wheel will be inset .17" further than the 17x9 +24 wheels were when using a 3/4" spacer.

Although I have not yet bought them the rear wheels will be 18x10 with +22mm offset. Based on the fit of my current 17x9 +24 with a 3/4" spacer the new wheels will fit without any spacer.

In the pic there is 1" of spacers used to clear the ball joint on the upper GW arms. This is just a mockup to determine how much the wheel needs to be narrowed. On the 17x9 Cobra R's I removed 1 1/4" just to be safe and I will likely do the same with these.

I just shipped the front wheels to Weldcraft Wheels in Plymouth Michigan www.weldcraftwheels.com to be narrowed from 18x9 to 18x8. If you consider the amount of welding involved they charge a very reasonable $125 per wheel for this service. I am still waiting on the 18x10 rear wheels to show up...typhoon season in China has delayed the container ship. Beyond this I still need to purchase the front 245/40-18 tires. I will probably pick up some BFG G-Force KD's on eBay for $300...

Have you done any work recently on the Comet? Also, I was wondering if you might have tried to mount the front wheels on the back of the Comet and if so how well they might have fit?

After mocking everything up, taking measurments etc., I am going to need some fab work done. i am taking it tomorrow morning to have a fab shop that did my brothers Falcon take a look at it and see what its going to take to squeeze them in. I dont want to move the leafs inboard and only will as a last ditch effort. He will be installing squared mini tubs at the very least. I am trying to change as little as possible to fit the rears. The fronts I have yet to mess with. More concerned with the rears. I will let you know though.

Looks like it may take moving the leafs in and tubs. Going in the shop Sept 10th unless he has an earlier opening. Its been a day and the waiting is already killing me. i will definitely post the pics.

I just got off the phone with Weldcraft Wheels and they are almost finished with narrowing my front wheels so I will have them back next week. Hopefully the rears will also show up next week and I can get this car back on the ground.

Long time.. Glad to hear your still making progress with the wheels. I had to put the wheels on back burner for now - Had to get the car running better. Now She's running, got to purchase a few small items and then the wheels will come. Keep us posted.

Yeah I'm pretty slow...life gets in the way of fast progress...this hobby takes alot of time and dime!
Also BTW, this morning I bought the front 245/40-18 BFG G-Force T/A KD's on Ebay for $343 shipped. They should show up next week about the same time the wheels get back from Weldcraft.

update...got the front tires yesterday maybe the front wheels will show up today...if so then I can post up some pics...now if only the rear wheels will show up...probably going to be a couple of more weeks...then if I can get the painter to finish the hood...then if I can get my lazy ass out in that hot garage to recover the seats...might have to wait for winter for that one

They fit ok...they don't rub when the wheel is turned but it is close and the car is not yet drivable either so I will have to wait and see. Also, with this setup I intended to run a 1/4" spacer. But the hub interferes with the center hole in the wheel so in the pics there is 1/2" spacer. I am going to enlarge the center hole in the wheel to clear the hub with a 1/4 spacer. Then I am going to have to modify the center caps to clear the tip of the spindle. Once I do this and move the wheel in a 1/4" the clearance will be significantly better.
I will more than likely have to replace the front coil springs because it is going to be too low when they settle after I drive start driving the car They are GW 620's that I cut one full coil from...I shoulda waited. On the back I might have to add some arch back into the leafs.

The rear wheels shipped out on Friday....thats the good news. The bad news is that I am going to be ouf of town for the next two weeks...so it will be a while before I get any more pics....however here is a link to a vid of the engine running...

Thanks...the front bs is 5.42". In the pics I have a 1/2" spacer, otherwise the oustide of the spindle hub interfers with the center hole in the wheel. I am going to pull the aluminum Baer hubs and machine the OD for clearance. Then I will use as little spacer as necessary to get the inner rim off the upper ball joint. This will move the front wheels in 1/4-3/8" when done.

The bs is the wheel only w/out the spacer. The front control arms are GW's...

No, on the back I have 295/35's and the fronts are 245/40. The front wheels will move in at least 3/8". If they cause problems there I will go to the next smaller size tire before raising it up :fingersx:

I modified the front wheels to remove the cast in lip that retains the center cap and now the front wheels fit without any spacer :bananna2:
Don't know yet what I am going to do for the center cap...I might just paint the exposed part of the blue anodized Baer hubs and the dust cap gloss black to match the wheels and be done with it. Although I have some ideas on how to attach the center cap it will have to stick out about 1" above being flush with the wheel...not too sure how that would look.
After the front wheel mod I am able to move the wheels in 1/2, this plus I raised the front of the car a 1/4" with some Poly coil spring spacers.
I will have the car off the stands this weekend to see how much these changes improved the previously non existant tire to fender clearance.
One good thing is that I can run these wheels with no adapters or spacers at all! And for less than a grand I was able to fit 18x10 and 18x8 wheels on this car.

And the magazine articles said it couldn't be done on a 67 - 68.
It seems there's a lot of poorly written articles floating around out there about stuffing the largest possible wheels and tires on a stang.

baaaad me! I actually took some new pics yesterday...after actually driving the car around the neighborhood for a half hour or so!...I was trying to get the suspension to settle as much as possible to see where I am with clearance...good news is that the fronts now clear real well. The problem is the left rear (my fat ass did not help) on bumps seems to rub a little...Makes sense because the left is about 1/4" lower and the tire is about an 1/8" further out the the right side. These dimension were taken from the fender lip. All of this might be because the right q-panel has been replaced. I think I am going to remove 1/8" from the mtg flange of the left wheel and add a 1/4" of arc to the spring as well. I will post up some pics later tonight.
A bigger issue I have now is that the rear main seal is leaking...pisses me off! Not sure why it is leaking but it might be because the engine sat for about 5 years before I started it. So I am going to yank the engine and replace the seal. I would like to convert it to a 1 pc seal if possible...otherwise I will just repalce it and offet the ends as I am not sure if I did that when I origianlly built the engine.

I think some assumptions have been passed around and everyone thought it was gospel...But for sure this is the maximum combo that will fit on this car with the only mod being rolled and flattened lips.

This is someone elses car currently for sale on ebay. He has 03 cobra wheels on it but the ride height was pretty high. I did a quick photochop to lower it. I think those wheels look pretty nice.

Here is a pic of the hub/wheel relationship that forced me to remove the lip that retains the center cap. I was looking at the FFR Cobra in the latest issue of HR...they are running this same wheel but their hubs do not protrude very much past the brake rotor. So now I want to replace the spindle and hub with one that will allow me to run the center caps. Anyone out there now of such an animal for this car? Otherwise I an going to paint the exposed portion of the blue anodized bubs black as well as the dust cover. Also, I noticed that Steve Rupps' Camaro also seems to have the same issue with his Forgelines.

Doesnt the ffr use mustang sn95 spindles? If so, thats why - sealed hub=no dust boot.

The pics of the FFR Cobra show a typical setup...just that it does not protrude past the rotor much which means it would not interfere with the center cap retaining ring in the center of the wheel. Not sure I have ever seen a sealed hub...how do you attach the spindle nut to retain the hub?

94+ mustangs use a sealed, non-servicable (I think) hub. It is torqued on and thats it. I found a set in a junk yard and used them for a 5-lug conversion on my 93 coupe. I dont know how many miles were on them, but they were perfect. I rarely hear of people having issues. Im still hoping to hit the lotto and get a griggs setup, which uses the same spindle-hub arrangement.
Imagine never having to worry about wheel bearings or dust cap clearance again.

Here is a before and after. It might be hard to tell from the pics, but the cap does not stick out nearly as much on the newer spindle setup.

Well I recently had the front end aligned so that I could do more than just idle around the hood...and the back rubs at the current ride height. I really like the current stance so I am going to go ahead and change the rears to 18x9's with a 275/40 tire. This way I can drive it like I stole it and not have to worry. At somepoint in the future when I change to a coil-over rear suspension I will mini-tub it and hang a 315 on it. But for now I desperately want to finish the car so that I can enjoy it this summer.
Good news is that there seems to be no issues with the front (245/40)...I did have to install a 1/4" spacer to keep the rim from rubbing on the upper control arms.

I enjoy reading about the mods you have done (suspension and wheel/tires). I am more into early Novas.... I have two of them, but my son is the proud owner of a 67 Mustang, and I really enjoy working on it with him.

They are replicas of a Ford Racing Parts FR500 wheel...wish I could afford some Fikses or Forgelines...maybe sometimes.

IMO low profile wide tires look disproportional to the car unless the top of the wheel opening is no higher than the top of the tire, and preferrably a little less.
He does mention that his fronts required trimming the upper arms. I wonder whose arms he's running? I think the 275's on the front will be ok

I agree with you that it would look much better lowered. There's no way he can make those sizes work if he lowers it.
The car is clean and has a nice look, but I see that the quality of the fit and finish of the aftermarket fiberglass spoilers is still poor.
