Hello,

My 1968 Camaro "project" started out im 3-2011 as a rust free (pretty
much) restored Pro Touring car.

It came with a 383 stroker and a 5 speed Tremec transmission.

I really couldn't post this build on a "true" Camaro site, as I would
most likely receive tons of hate mail. What I did to the car after I
received it would be considered wrong on so many levels by Camaro
purists.

Pulled the entire drivetrain, which was sold to another enthusiast

Towed car to local body shop for a "freshen up" on the paint

After doing a thorough review of my body and paint work,

we decided to do an entire repaint, as well as a few

other tweaks. After reading several articles, I decided to have the car painted

with all panels, trim etc. off the car.

After owning 3 cars with LS drivetrains, decided to treat this car to the same.



Started collecting information on how to swap an LS drivetrain into my car.

Attention to detail has been paid close attention to.

I am building a true Pro Touring car that can do well on the road, be very reliable, even get decent gas mileage!

My father owned a '68 Camaro. Out of all the cars he owned, he loved
it the most. I always loved the first Gens as well.
I had a hard time getting past the feel of a new car.
LS motors and the six speeds that go with them kinda ruined me.
My last car was a 2007 Z06.
I am new to the Pro Touring scene and had to do many, many, hours
of research on my own to get where I am. I ordered all that has been done.
Not turning any wrenches, but designing all on my own. As you know, no one
has a complete book on everything you need to know to swap these in.
I put together my parts list in an effort to help others in their design.

You car is awesome! Love the '69 body. Didn't see as many high end 68's,
so this one has to be exceptional! I am cutting no corners and am taking the time
to get the parts and the look I envisioned. Their are some undivulged design plans for the
car that will be shown once finished. This will be a one off design that will keep the classic
look, but nothing else. I hope others will like my taste, as I see many customs that are loved
solely by the owner. LOL.

I have owned both colors, liked the black better when it was clean.
My reservation with black was that it spiderwebs easily.
The spiderweb effect is supposedly non existent with the PPG Ceramiclear that
I am using. Otherwise, I would have stayed with silver. I do have two other silver vehicles,
thinking three may be a crowd.
Going to include pics of the minitub job as it will be done tomorrow.
Thinking of pulling the frame and powdercoating it, as car is pretty much a roller.
Especially since we notched and boxed the frame. No rust for me! Guess it's my OCD acting up!
Have to know that car has absolutely zero issues.

I am thinking of using a Ford 9" for the rear end, but am looking for recomendations.

Also need help with the fuel system, as car should be over 600rwhp. Aeromotive has a new intank pump
that fits in place of a Walbro that should support this kind of power.
Don't know what to do on the rest, as I am not sure the Corvette regulator will work. Thinking hardline, or Teflon (Aeroquip brand) fuel lines,
maybe a combination of both. Thinking Rick's tank.

Looking at Speed Tech Performances torque arm setup, as I will be running 345's vs 335's in the rear. May do their coilovers in front as well.

Also need help with a custom intake. Thinking of custom bent stainless pipe (maybe powdercoated black). I want the least amount of joints possible.

Looking at a custom rear seat, as I am unsure of mine, with the minitub. Maybe a Mike's Custom setup?

Door panels. Looking at Fesler and Marquez.

Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated!

Car looks great, I'll be following this one for sure. Don't worry about what people say on other sites, there will always be purists. It's your car, do what you want with it. I started with a Plain Jane '67 because I didn't want to hack up a real SS or Z, but didn't want to be stuck driving and "old car" either. Still a work in progress...

Heres my new center console. It is very well made and one of the coolest parts of the interior. My particular console was the first one built specifically for the '68 Camaro and is the one pictured on the website. modernclassicsinteriors.com MCI is now a forum vendor!
It will be covered in black leather. The lid opens to a large compartment. The inside bottom of the compartment is lined with neoprene.

I have seen several outside the box LS cars selling for alot of $$. LS swaps seemed to be an acceptable
mode of transport for many. Its funny. I bought a restored car just to tool around in, and ended up here.
Should call it Project Money Pit, but am quite sure that name has been already taken. Infinity is the name of the project.
The name of the car will be unleashed once the beast itself is let out of its cage.

Just sent my deluxe door panels,rear side panels,dash pad,grab handle,a pillar panels, and rear package shelf panel to Mike, my fiberglasser.
He is re designing them (as he did with the center console) out of fiberglass. I am recovering all in leather. Should be interesting!

I know someone will surely shoot me for this, and maybe it's because I dont know any better, but
I feel,all things considered (power per cubic inch,physical weight,gas mileage,durabilty,etc.) LS motors are
unbeatable. If there is a motor out there that is better in all of these catagories, let me know! Ill buy one!
My 505hp Z06 got near 25mpg highway!

I wanted to rob my nissan titan at one point if not for the unique sound, then for pure messin with the purists factor! You obviously will have an insane car capable of many things!

Eliminating leaf springs, notched the frame. DSE tubs installed.

This is a great looking project, I will love to see it as it evolves. Nice choice on the LS swap. I am almost finished with my LS2 swap in a 74 Corvette. I was very unsure if I was doing the right thing by choosing the LS, but at this point, nearly finished, I feel I made the right choice. I feel the Gen 1 motors are a thing of the past and we will see many more choosing to do the LS swap.

Just ordered Morris Classic Concepts driving lights and 3 point seat belts (front)
plus rear lap belts.
Billy has the ability to leave out the amber parking light lamp for use with my 68 Anvil Auto valance.
He is making mine up to work with the dash mounted switch versus working
only with the high beams. Now thats service!!
Robin (not sure if I spelled her name right) at Morris Classic is wonderful to talk to and will treat
you like gold! I recommend ordering directly from them! Ill post pics of the parts once I get them.
Car still in paint prison, but should be out soon with any luck!

Morris Classic Concepts actually adds the amber bulb to the assembly for the 69.
I just called them to ask them if we could get it done that way. They were very accomodating!
I will mount the lights in the valance and take pics immediately!
All these parts make it hard to wait, but at least I will be able to finish the car as I envisioned, without comprimise.
The lights are 55 watt halogens. I will be using them as driving lights and will be on their own circuit.
The switch actually shows what color is being illuminated by the halo. Coolest lights EVER!!

A couple of additions

Morris Classic Concepts lights. Had trouble fitting these. Pretty sure the valance mounting was off. Had to flip the visor for the light. Think I will powder coat the stainless visor for the lights to help them blend in. The lights are very good quality with glass lenses. The color of the led halo ring can be controlled from inside the car.

PSI Conversions LS3 engine harness. This was a real bargain. Made to order $549! Only three wires to integrate into vehicle harness. No emission wiring,etc. Wires are lengthened to mount the ecm behind the dash. The harness has a really nice, sliding rubber firewall grommet for a waterproof seal.

The Morris lights comewith a polished metal shroud(bracket) that surround the lights. The part of the shroud that looks like a visor (sticks out) is supposed to mount mount in the hole in the valance facing up. It stuck way out when I mounted that way,so i inverted it. I am convinced that it is the aftermarket valance mounting points causing the issue. I had to elongate the mounting holesin the valance, and sand off some material to make it work. It looks good now.I am okay with the shroud being inverted, as it is just a gap filler. I will powder coat the shroud black and be done with it.

Working on door gaps. Setting them at 3/16". Sliding the smooth end of a 3/16'" drill bit through the gap for consistency. We are also taking measurements at several points down the gaps.

We are then panel fitting all the Carbon Fiber components including
front valance ,header panel, hood, cowl panel, trunk lid and rear spoiler.
Will also fit the bullet mirrors at the same time. Smoothing firewall as well.

I am adding an Eforce supercharger, so looking between 610-650rwhp.
Already have a blower cam(114 LSA for driveability), dual springs,etc.
You generally don't see high power and clean together, so trying to make

Sweet car right now I'm building a 1970 chevelle with an ls motor in it and its not even finished and I have people at autozone telling me its a shame I'm putting that motor in.... Im 19 and my chevelle will be my daily driver back and forth to college so i want something decent on gas and not a hassle to stop at a red light with. Its pretty ridiculous how people pretend like its up to them what we do to our cars. your car is going to be sweet and who cares what they think! Nice ride can't wait for updates!

Car is going to the race shop this week to get the Tru turn kit, new subframe, and coilovers installed. Smoothing firewall, installing weld in subframe connectors, Lizard skinning interior and underbody.Will post more pics soon.

BTW, Jonathan, I was searching the last several Barrett Jackson auctions. The last several pro touring LS3 Camaros (with a nice interior,etc) average sold price was $137,000.
Guess LS power isn't such a bad thing!

New subframe. I am having a Screamin Performance tow\ jacking plate welded on. Welds are within the outline of the plate.
Priming frame side of plate with weld thru primer before installing to prevent corrosion.
Grinding the welds smooth. This plate will look factory when done. It will add hidden tow hooks to get the car into the trailer without damage.
Priming the frame and painting with John Deer Blitz Black. Using an airless sprayer to apply paint.

The guy that applied it said it was easy to spray. I purchased the Lizardkin application kit to help things along.
To me, it made a huge improvement over the way the underbody looked. I am very happy with it.
We did quite a bit of work to make sure the bottom of the car would look great before spraying it,
including using panel bond on all seams. The car was stripped of all components,brackets, clips,etc. before spraying.
We also sprayed it with the subframe removed. I feel prep is 99% of what will make this application look good.
It looks much better than bedliner and should make a huge improvement as far as the noise level of the vehicle.
Will be spraying the interior with Lizardskin ceramic insulation early next week.

good to know....i'm still on the rotisserie but plan on shooting it here in about a month...been working on prep as you said can't do enough. I also plan on shooting it with a single stage ureathane. How much did you use ........i bought 6Ga of the sound deadner and 4 Ga of the ceramic....?

I have sprayed my 69 Camaro inside and out with Lizzard skin SD and Ceramic insulation. I have been told that it needs to be covered in a coat of paint (on the underside) to protect it from the elements. Mine is not on the road yet but I can't wait to see how effective the lizzard skin really is.

I have also covered the inside with a half inch thick layer of foam sound insulator sheet where I could. I am aiming for as close to modern OEM sound levels as possible.

The shop that put the swaybar on wont be touching my car again!

I have a great mechanic now that is going over all.
I bought stainless bolts to replace all suspension bolts that weren't stainless or zinc
plated.

I also purchased Billet Specialties Pro Bolts for the front sheet metal and
Totally Stainless OE style stainless bolts for the rest of the body. Inside the car,
I have a master screw kit that is labeled for each area to make sure the small details
are correct.

Just ordered the new heat exchanger from C&R Racing.
Part number 56-00010.
This is a direct fit heat exchanger.
No mods needed other than one drilled hole in the
radiator support!

C&R saved me a boatload of $$$$, as I would have had to have one custom made
and modify my hood latch \ support.

The exchanger is designed for ZR1 ZL1 LSA high horsepower applications, so will
be perfect with my forged LS3.

C&R worked directly with Vintage Air on this part.
It is said to work perfectly with the Vintage Air condenser!

Purchased it from Summit Racing for $599 shipped.

C&R is one of those little known gems. They do all of the cup cars. They don't use epoxy or cheap cores. I've been a fan for awhile now. Getting ready to order their LS swap radiator for my El Camino project. Will never run another brand. Eager to hear how you enjoy yours!

Went to drop off some loom for my wiring today (replacing all plastic loom with fiberglass\fabric loom)
My car is sitting next to the Spurs 1969 Camaro.
I was talking to the electrician working on my car, telling him what all mods, etc I am doing to my car.
He remarked by saying "It will never be what the Spurs Camaro is"
I asked why wouldnt it be? He said that the Spurs Camaro was "built for the Spurs"
I asked him what the Spurs Camaro would sell for. He said they probably have 200k in it and
went on to say that I could never afford it, and to not make him laugh.

I only have 100k cash in my car so far, so he must be right.
I am in sales and have rarely, if ever, had someone say something so out of place to a customer.
Hes very good at what he does, just set me back a little with his words.

So I had to Google what the "spurs Camaro" was after reading this.
Meh... Besides the ZL1, it just looks like a dated overhaulin' wanna be.
This is exactly why I have a picture of my '95 integra from high school on my fridge. With its huge spoiler/body kit and clear tail lights, it was the hottest ride in the parking lot..now it just looks silly(although I maintain to this day that my rare JDM Mugen spoiler was the ****)

Heres an issue I really need input on.
Using an American Autowire harness
My electrician is telling me I will see an 8 inch run of wire from the factory pre cut hole for the fusebox to the back of the motor

Cant the fusebox be relocated to the other side of the trans tunnel??

Any other ideas?

Any help here is much appreciated!

Update: Ended up spacing the fusebox off the firewall and running the wires
through the passenger compartment. My idea!

This is the Aeromotive Phantom setup in an E85 tested pump vs standard pump
Tank has a really nice baffle provided by Aeromotive to prevent starvation.
Before anyone comments, baffle has been tested for a long while and doesnt degrade with E85 (I confirmed with Brett at Aeromotive)

I am thinking I will do a full polish on the tank.

P.S; I know its over a year old but I would say there was a solid bit of jealousy behind the comments from your auto sparky re; Spurs....yes its a nice build and I have a soft spot for the RamJet as I am also running one but that not the point, its certainly not a flawless car and at the end of the day you build a car for yourself, how you want, not to try and be like someone else....amazing he would dare speak like to a client!

I used the DSE bracket but our pedal doesn't work work the bracket so i just drilled 3 more holes and made it fit. I wonder if DSE would like to use my bracket so they can modify their existing ones?

There is more durable coatings available. If it's been changed , I apologize for mentioning it. I'm in agreement with your statement about not wanting it to drive old. I have old and new. My 32 is old and my 51 is new. :)

If high end is determined by cost of parts, I am over 100k so would be considered a high end build.
John Deere Blitz Black was purchased as a recommendation by many hotrodders as a fade (has a great UV blocker)
and chip resistant, durable coating

OK? Ya wanna explain this seasonal thing?
So... In the summer its ok to drive your car but in the winter your screwed because the paint is seasonal?
Really, who said this? Why would they think its seasonal?

JDBB held up in the "the weather room" where the worst type of hell was unleashed upon it. From acid rain to salts. Paints from A to Z were compared to BB, and BB came out on top. It wasn’t formulated for bling bling it was made for hard core industrial applications.

So for the price, formula, durability, ease of spray, JDBB is the best bet. We will NOT be able to out use it. We will be dirt nappin long before BB will fail.

It is a good paint. My frame has been transported, installed, and uninstalled.
No chips, etc on the frame. Still looks the same as when I first painted it.
I used it on the frame and undercoating only.

Rest of all metal parts are powdercoated satin black.

I primed it using John Deere primer and thinned it accordingly
Had it sprayed by a body shop

Couldnt powdercoat the frame as I will be welding the subframe connectors which will burn the powder.

Sorry for the late reply.
Somehow the thread settings were changed and didn't see this until today.
Console, dash panel, a\c panel and door panels will be leather wrapped and double stitched.
I also have a trim plate that fits over the slot in the shift plate, so will look good.
Wilwoods are 6 piston front, 4 piston rear. Think they are Dynalites.
Wheels are Rushforth Nightrain.
