Frame paint?

Just looking for suggestions. I will be pulling the wagon's frame and having it sandblasted. I've used Por 15 with good results in the past, but I don't want a black frame this time, looking for something more along the lines of pewter or charcoal gray. I checked Eastwood's catalog but in their durable chassis worthy paint all they sell is black. This car will see about 8-10,000 miles a year so I'd like something that can withstand the daily grind. Also prefer something I can spray on rather than the brushed on Por 15 that I did on my last car. Thoughts?

I have it on the belly of my 61 and it is real tough!! They can mix to any color code too, it was a perfect match to my body color.

Powder coating is the ultimate option but unfortunately out of budget. Thanks for the insight 61, that looks like a great resource if I can't find anything else.

I did a google image search this morning for gray frame paint and found a GTO forum that showed a guy that painted his frame with Eastwood's "Ceramic Spray Gray". From what I can see in the photo it's close to what I'm after... I think.

Eastwood only has a photo of the "Spray Gray" color. Wonder how their "Detail Gray" (stamped steel color) looks compared to the "Spray Gray" (cast gray color). Anyone else use this stuff?

x2 on the powder coat, cost me about $300.00 for a Camaro front sub, but I had power washed my frame prior so it was pretty clean when the powder coat shop got it (would have been 350 otherwise for them to clean it with all the grime).

I've had good luck with SEM products, online or your favorite auto paint store.
I use SEM rustshield in quarts on frames and chassis (comes in gray and about 6 other colors), combined with SEM 38008 hardener.
Makes for a hard durable surface, sprays well. I have tried 38008 in other paints experimenting, with great results.
It has a short pot life though once the hardener is added.

Any single stage catalyzed paint would work just fine for a frame. Look up the single stage efforts of the major paint companies.

I have used both the "detail gray" and "spray gray". I liked the detail gray the best. I did my driveshaft with it, but only time will tell on durability.

x2 on the catalyzed single stage. I painted the frame (actually the whole bottom of the car) on a '74 Z28 met. blue... had the car for ten years and still looked good when I sold it. (I did drive in the rain, but not in the winter).

Hey Ben,
Look at Rustleom... They have a lot of colors available that look good. I used their "Hammered" gray on the arms for my '49 F1 and it looked great. I will probably use the same paint for Bad Ast's arms...

powder coat is nice, but if and when it gets chipped ....your screwed. Thats why i went with KBS Rust Seal. Check out there products. There product and customer service is second to none. My 2 cents. Good luck. Pm me if you need any more info. I posted a thread a while back with pics.

I used the KBS also.
The frame detail kit is pretty extensive. Cleaner, etcher, and sealer paint.
The cleaner is very good and I have already dropped a hammer on it and it did not leave a mark.
And for $58 plus shipping that is in everybodies budget.

Check with a DuPont distibutor for a Kevlar additive that is added to paint to topcoat the LineX bedliner. I havent tried using this to spray any chassis parts,but I do know it is a VERY tough product. I will be looking at using it in the future myself.

I use the eastwood 2K Ceramic Chassis Black Satin Quart . I like it cause you can spill brake fluid,gas and other fluid and doesnt eat into it.

You can paint over POR15 with a quality paint but you have to follow their prep instructions. I think it intails a light coat of your paint sprayed over the still tacky POR15 to give the paint some bite into the POR15 IIRC. I think the same basic steps apply to Eastwoods & KBS to paint over them. They may have a primer also for bite into the rust sealer. Another option is rustoleum industrial enamels. Not available at the box stores but through places like Grainger & Fastenal.

I have a gallon of the 7400 system I'm using on my car and plan to get another color for other areas inside the car.

Here are some pics of the rearend for Bad Ast. This is Rustoleum Black Hammer Tone. It is close to a slate gray. I rattle canned it. :) 5 dollars. If you put on light coats the HAMMER is not as obvious. I sprayed this yesterday and it was dry to the touch in 15 minutes.

I will be doing the chassis with this paint also. 12 bucks a quart and it looks pretty good.

I'm in the same boat, but with a camaro subframe. I've already tried POR15 from in a previous attempt. What was interesting was when I finally pulled it out to clean it up, long story, I power washed it and the por15 peeled right off any bare metal area. I love the product on the back of welds or rust prone areas, but didn't work well as a chassis coat.

I just ordered the two part epoxy chassis coat from Summit and I'll let you know how it goes. I won't have time to spray it till the 27th. We'll see how it goes.

Also, I was bummed to see how fast brake fluid ate through por15... just a thought for a daily driver.
