I have Boyd coddington smoothie II's, there polished and I think there the cast wheel. Here's my ?, is it possible to get the wheels brushed or even do it myself, and how ?
Hello,
To brush the wheel properly and have uniformity, this is usually done before the center is welded in the rim at the factory. You can do it yourself with a fine scotch bright pad and work your rear off to make all look the same, but the downfall is that road oil, bugs, fingerprints, etc..., will constantly show their face due to the wheel center not being clearcoated after brushing. The only way I have found to keep non protected brushed aluminum looking decent is to use spray brake cleaner on a towel and wipe away.

Thank you for that info. Going off that, can I get the wheels powder coated clear after I do the work? Or even have them clear painted by a pro?
Thanks, Mark.

You CAN have them coated, either way, but I wouldn't... look at any factory aluminum wheel where the coating has been chipped and the aluminum is corroding underneath. Not pretty. Leave the rims bare aluminum. Yea, it's a little work to maintain them, but at least you CAN maintain them. The coating just works against any kind of polishing or cleaning and you will hate it.
Use a little WD40 when you are de-shining your centers. Works well as a lubricant and helps even out the finish. Wear rubber gloves if you don't want black hands. :)

Hi Mark,
You can but the life of the clear will be short and look awful as it fails. The problem is where the outer rim and center meet at the edge, eventually chipping or peeling. Does the center cap on your wheels say Boyds or Genuine Boyds?

First off I want to say thanks Mark and Perry for your help and advice on the wheels.
Perry- they are white stickers on the caps and say Genunie Boydcoddington.

Let me contact Genuine Boyds and see how much it would costs to have the wheels re-hooped and at the same time brushing and clear coating the centers before final assemby if you are interested.
Let me know...

If you dont mind that would be great. Funds are a little low for car wants right now, but the wallet seems to open up a little more in the winter.
So with your help it will give me something to look foward to. let me know what you find out.
Thanks, Mark.

If we reuse your hoops by using the same backspace or adding more positive backspace, we can redo the centers in brushed w/ re polished barrels for $160.00 per wheel.
Let me know...

That sounds like a fair price ,and I am interested. But it will have to wait till around november when I store the car for the winter. as I mentioned before the wallet is tight for car stuff through the summer months.
Thanks for the info I'm sure we will be doing this soon.
Mark.
