Wiring a 10SI alt?

I have a 10SI alt on my Impala and was wondering if the wire that is supposed to go to the charge light has to be connected? I do not have the factory light working as I am going to put a Autometer volt gauge in instead.

I have the charge wire and the volt sensing wire to the main positive distribution block as per MAD electric. Just not sure where to put the idiot light wire to if anywhere?

Nope it is the 2 wire plug like the 10SI in this link........

Thanks, Thats the one, only I have eliminated my stock regulator and wiring for it.

I have the alt all wired up except for the wire that goes to terminal #2. It is for the idiot light on the dash except I dont have that either due to a custom dash and I am now using the Autometer volt gauge instead.

So the real question is do I have to connect terminal #2 to anything or leave it disconnected?

just leave it open...or make your own warning lamp for it.

put a warning lamp in your dash- it will tell you right away when the alternator stops charging. you have to use a regular light bulb since an LED won't have enough resistance to trigger the alternator.

since we're on the topic of dash lights- i always like to have functional temp and oil pressure lights, too.. that way you know right away if it gets hot or you lose oil pressure. plus all those lights look cool when you turn the key on and go off when you start the car.

So if I put a lamp in is the alt terminal used as a ground and the lamps other wire to positive or the other way around?

if the alternator is not setup as a 1 wire, you will need to put the light in to excite the alternator. You must use a standard incandescent bulb. One side of the bulb gets wired to ignition, the other to the alternator

Yes.

The two wires in the plug are remote sensing and excitor related. The brown factory wire works. It actually has redundancy built in from the factory in case the light burns out. The wire through the bulb gets resistance from the bulb. there is a parallell resisted wire. these 2 wires meet under the dash prior to entering the underhood as the brown wire. The alternator will not excite if it is not wired here.
