View Full Version : Cragar-like 17" five spoke wheels?
Hi all, I'm working on a 65 GTO convert for my wife. She had one in high school & I'm kinda cloning it. She always wanted Cragars on the original & I'd like to surprise her this time. I am looking for 17" wheels to clear disc's front and rear.
The problem is that they don't make them with the proper backspacing for the 65. Everything I read says I should have about 4.5 b.s. on 7 inchers & 5.5 for 8 inchers on the rear. The car has a wider late model rear under it.
Is there a 5 spoke wheel out there with broader, flatter spokes? Most of the billet 5 spokes I see have kinda narrow, peaked spokes,
Any help on this would be welcomed.

Not sure I can post a pic but here's a link to the wheel.

These are about as close as I could find to a "flatter" type spoke. They can be made to any backspacing you need...

I bought aluminum 17x11 Cragar S/S wheels with custom backspacing. They have 7, 8, 9.5 and 11 inch widths. I can only assume that they offer custom backspacing in the narrower sizes, but I would call Cragar. They were part of the "612 Series" if that helps. I called Cragar and they gave me the minimum and maximum backspacing they offer and then they had me order them from Summit Racing. Here is a bad picture, but that is all I have at the moment.

There are also some American Racing options at the bottom of this page.

IMHO, those Oasis Old School wheels that look kind of like the Hurst wheels would be PERFECT on a 66 GTO if they have the right backspacing. Bookmarked for later reference.

Try Billet Specialties. They have something that's pretty close. Lots of back spacing options as well.

Thanks again for the help! Anyone know how the Cragar 612's clear the brake calipers? I was wondering if they clear LS Camaro brakes.
Autox, Thanks for the info & I sent you a PM. I hope you don't mind.

Murf,
I have a set of the 17 inch Cragars that I don't use anymore. They cleared the 1969 style factory brakes on my 68 GTO with no problems. The Baer GT brakes (Corvette C5 brakes) do not clear the spokes and required a small spacer between 1/4 and 1/8 inch. They are 17x7 and 17x8. Let me know if you want more info.

y not just get 17 inch cragars
cuz at the time of my first post, I didn't think I could get enough backspace to fit. Now there is some ? about the spokes clearing the calipers.
How about Genuine Boyds Smoothie III and Vintage 5.
Available in 17x7, 17x8, 17x1, 17x11 with 1/8" increments in backspace options.
