This vehicle belongs to my customer, Tom, and is currently powered by a TPI 350/700R4 combo. When it comes to the shop in May, it will be getting a new LS 376/480 crate engine and a new crate 4 speed auto, complete with the GM controllers. BRP Musclerods is supplying the mounts and long tube 1 7/8 headers. Thanks to Jeff Tate at Days Chevrolet here in Acworth for the great deal on the GM parts. I'm planning to post the full install here, along with all the parts used so anyone can duplicate this. Tomorrow, I'll post a few pics of the new engine and the GM controllers. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask!

I have only seen a few pics, but it looks like a very nice car. I have always liked the G-bodies, and there's just something cool about these wagons. Most project cars we get, I enjoy the building process the most, but this one...I can't wait to drive!

The Malibu will be hitting the shop either this week or next (depending on some paint touchups being made), but we got the LS3 376/480, and the GM controllers for both the engine and transmission (GMPP 19244043, the Supermatic 4L70E). The trans should be here any day now, and we'll have the BRP Musclerods swap kit and Heddman/Musclerods coated 1 7/8 full length headers in the next couple of days, along with the Kwiq Performance accessory drive.

those G body wagons are cool, but I wish somone would figure a way to make the rear door windows functional! one of the worst cost cutting measures GM ever made.
some of these wagons came from the factory w/ a V8 and a 4 speed, cool stuff!

I'm glad to see the interest in this car; I'm very excited about it personally. I get to work on all kinds of cool projects every day, but this one is special. Not only is it a really nice car, the owner is a really nice guy (something I can't always say). I always strive to be sure that my customer is happy with anything we do, but this one is going to take some extra effort from our whole crew. I don't want to get into his personal situation, but suffice to say we have pushed this build to our highest priority, to ensure that its completed to our high standards in a short period of time.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank Phil Brewer, and Nick and Jeff and the crew at BRP/Musclerods for all their help and support in making this project possible.

Sorry, thats all I have so far, and the car isn't here yet. Should be here sometime next week, along with a lot of parts that are on order. Yes, the TPI setup looks nice, but the customer says he was having some issues with it. How serious, I don't know. Not sure what his plans are for the old setup, but if it becomes available I'll post it here first.

Tony_SS

What are the details on the fuel setup? Let us know when you find out...

BulldawgMusclecars
05-04-2011, 12:20 PM
The customer says it has an inline pump currently, and that whoever did the TPI install didn't do a very good job. Depending on what we find, I may swap it over to an in-tank style pump. I'm anticipating having to replace all the lines, since I'm pretty particular about that sort of thing...from a safety, as well as appearance, standpoint.

We got the bracket kit in from Quick Performance today...basically their version of a Corvette setup, only set up for a Sanden-style compressor. I got the Sanden compressor and Type II pump from them also. I'll just need to get an LS2 style tensioner, and the belts and I'll be good to go. The MSD tach adapter also came in. I'll post some pics shortly.

Let us know what route you take..

BulldawgMusclecars
05-05-2011, 10:49 AM
I have used them before, and they work well enough for straightline or cruiser type applications, or a car with a sumped tank or cell (to ensure the pickup doesn't get uncovered). I don't like them so much in any car that is going to be driven hard in the curves, autocrossed, etc. In this case, I'm thinking the best route may be to sump the original tank (since I doubt it interchanges with any later tanks with a factory EFI option, being a wagon). I don't think a $1500 fuel tank is in the budget on this one. The parts total is over $15k now.

Here is the exhaust system we're going with (Magnaflow #15898, 3", stainless, dual side exit exhaust). Not a direct fit (its a Chevelle system), but should be fairly close:

love the build so far.

Just a little input on the whole in-tank vs in-line discussion. I've done both in moderate (350-375whp) & insane (600+rhwp) cars and learned a great deal.

In-line pumps are fine for basic, moderate set ups, but definitely need plenty of ventilation and need to be sized so that they don't over-work themselves. I think this is the key. Crazy as it sounds for some people, for in-tank pumps, the fuel acts as a coolant for the pump. So the pump can work a great deal more and stays cooler. Look at Aeromotive inline pumps: huge heat-sink area in the aluminum housing etc.

I have used, in the same Mustang a Walbro inline 255lt/hr pump, then the Aeromotive 1001 with great results. However, the modified Mustang tank with a custom fuel-pump stand. I took a stock 87-93 Mustang tank, cut it 6" square around the OE EFI fuel pump stand & grafted it into my Mustang II tank. Fuel pressure, fuel temps, and driveability all went over the top better. Literally 255 ltr/hour inline vs intank 255 from the same company, same lines, same filter, all other variables, identical.

I'm not sure what it is about the intank set up but it ran better. Then when I built the King Cobra (the first time) I automatically went in-tank. Quieter, no fuel delivery issues.

I know lots of hard-core racers use in-lines for 1,320ft at a time, but for a street driven/autocrossed/tossed around vehicle, the in tank is just simply more stable/reliable.

Hope that helps someone with their build.

Rob

Thanks for your thoughts on the pump, Rob!

I have been thinking about this as well, and for the intended purpose of this car I think the in-tank is going to be the way to go, even if it does take a little more fabrication. This car will be driven on long trips (at least from my shop back to the customer's home several states away), and the cooling effect of the gasoline on the pump could be an issue. The last thing I want is for the customer to have a fuel pump failure, even if it is on the frame rail and easy to access. I'm not sure if the G-body wagon tank is shaped significantly different than other G-bodies, but if its similar I may try to locate a GN style sending unit/pump assembly...with a larger pump of course.

ModedCB2
05-06-2011, 02:15 PM
Joe, no problem glad to lend an experience.

Like I said. What I have been doing is grafting the main "pump stand" area from a known sufficient application, in my case the tried-n-true 87-93 Mustang into my older Red-Headed-Step-Children Mustang II tanks. The Depth of both tanks is nearly identical in my case, so if a GN/T-type/Monte SS tank is basically the same general depth dimension, then you don't have the head aches of fuel level inaccuracies. That was the way I approached my hybrid tank. My Mustang II tanks are only 10 gallons, but the internal depth is nearly identical to within 1/8". So it was easy. Safely vacate the Fox tank, cut a 6" square area around the pump/sender stand. Then cut a 4" square area out of the Mustang II tank, solder/weld the Fox stand on top. Done. I just know when the gauge says E... it REALLY means Empty.. lol.

This way the aftermaket support for my fuel pump needs are 87-93 mustang not Mustang II or high-$$ fancy in line pumps.

I would bet that if you did a lil digging, a caprice, GN or even a basic Regal/cutlass with an EFI pump would be the tank to search for. Then just Warlbo 255 or bigger, never look back.

I'm all over the Rick's Tanks Stainless Bling, but I don't have $900+ for a tank. I just don't. So that $$ is spent on other areas. Working smarter not harder.

I overheated in-line fuel pumps for nearly 2 years before I finally just bit the bullet. I was only originally making 425-450 rwhp and the pump was over heating the fuel on crazy hot days. I always run 1/2" or -8AN feed and 3/8" or -6AN return which everyone says is overkill. Still the in-line was working too hard.

Nothing more frustrating than fuel issues on Hot Rod Power Tour. Having to sit out for 5 hours waiting.

Anyway. More pics! Love the wagons!

Ask and ye shall receive...

The first one shows a slight interference problem that I had to address. The alternator hit part of the bracket (there were two seperate mounting holes, to accomodate other application alternators I guess), and had to be clearanced slightly. No bigee. The alternator is for an '08 Silverado 5.3 (O'Reillys).

EDIT: Turns out, I needed a Corvette alternator, and have since picked one up, since the GMPP wiring harness is set up for a 3 pin plug instead of 2 like the truck alternator. The mounting is different between the two also, and the Corvette alternator would bolt right up with no mods. Since I cut the bracket, I'm getting a replacement from Wayne at Quik. I also sent him pics so he could see the mounting issue with truck alternator. The truck alternator I was using has an aftermarket case (O'Reilly's), and a stock alternator may not have this issue.

The next 2 shots show a sensor bolted to the head that has to be relocated for the AC bracket; no big deal.

You probably noticed the Corvette coil covers were removed in the later pics. Unfortunately, the passenger side cover doesn't clear the AC bracket, so its going to have to be modifed slightly (cut down at the front lower corner). I'll leave that part for Monday, which, incidentally, is when the car is due to arrive. I'll have more pics of the car then, and hopefully by day's end pics of the old engine and trans out of the car.

Rob, I hear you on Power Tour issues. I have been lucky so far. I don't know if my customer's health will allow a trip such as Power Tour, but if he chooses to do that I want to be sure he's only stopping for gas, not repairs, or for a pump to cool down. I'll probably do something similar to your pump solution, if there isn't a bolt in unit that can be easily modifed to work. Are you doing the Tour this year? If all goes according to plan, I'll be Long Hauling it for the first time this year (sadly, not in one of my all-unfinished projects, but probably in the wife's '09 Mustang GT 'vert).

ModedCB2
05-06-2011, 04:27 PM
this year is unlikely for us. My oldest son is going to be 8 in July & my youngest will be 6 in June. My oldest has expressed an interest in building & painting. So we are going to do a small project together first and I hope that before Kaden is 9 he will have a paint gun in his hand. We have LOTS to do on the King Cobra before we can even remotely think about a cruise. Its a total reconstruction. I'm hoping that I will start a build log in late August when we start.

Being in Dallas/Metro there are lots of small/local things to spark the boys' interest. I just focus on seeing what they gravitate toward. Sports, music, cars, whatever. My wife & I did Power Tour 2002 & 2003. We moved to Dallas in 2005 when my oldest was 2. We've been living vicariously through this and other forums until we can really make the boys first tour special.

anyway... back to your build. I'm searching for a '56-65 Ford Wagon right now. If I find the right Wagon, all the Mustangs get put on hold, because Momma deserves a fresh ride. I built her a wicked '89 Fox-body Mustang coupe right before my oldest was "discovered"... she drove it maybe 5 months. Momma deserves a cruiser. She wants something slick & lean. I want something FoMoCo & hopefully tu-tone & pretty for her to enjoy...

Maybe we'll see you next year...by then I'm hoping to have 1 of my personal projects done!

The wagon is due in tomorrow morning, and we're going to start doing the disassembly as soon as it gets there. I should have the BRP/Musclerods parts (engine and trans mounts, and 1 7/8 full length headers) tomorrow evening. Still waiting on the trans (GM backorder), the oil pan kit (GMPP Musclecar kit), the convertor, and a few other incidentals like the starter bolts. The exhaust system is due to arrive tomorrow, and the Afco radiator should be in this week, too. I can't wait to get started!

Today was pretty productive. We got the TPI unit and front accessories off the engine, along with the valve covers (to prevent damage), and pulled the engine and transmission. There were the usual issues...a stripped u-joint strap bolt, stripped transmission cooler line fittings, etc...but nothing major. The TPI wiring is best described as a rat's nest. I'll give some credit, it DID work, but its pretty cobbled up. Looks like an original Camaro harness, with lots of added red wire and tape. I'll post pics tomorrow; my camera battery died, and my iPhone isn't cooperating either (bad signal in this old building).
We got the Musclecar Pan Kit in from Day's, along with the Corvette tensioner for the accessory drive, and the Magnaflow Exhaust. A pair of new inner fenderwells came in also, to replace the original ones damaged by the bad front lowering job (HEATED coil springs!). Once the engine is in and the car is running, we'll fit some new springs and cut them as needed for the right ride height.

Agreed, I'll be using them in the future I'm sure. I'm about to start on a G-body for my son very soon... a 1987 Buick Grand National. Its all stock right now, but won't be for long. I'm not going too crazy with the engine, but it will be built solid so that the boost can be dialed up later.

Off to gather some more parts...the torque convertor is in (GM's recommended unit for this crate engine) at Day's Chevrolet, and I'm going to get the Corvette regulator/filter assembly.

Heddman east coast makes some very nice stuff. The coating is much nicer than most on the market, too...its done by Performance Coatings in Jonesboro, GA. I use them for all my ceramic and powder coating.
I have all but given up on the other major name brand headers, due to fitment issues. These are specifically engineered to work with BRP's mounts, too, so there is no guesswork.

The ride height looks great, and the rear is dropped properly, but the front springs are still the heated originals. I'll be ordering a new set of springs today, and swapping them out while we still have everything apart. They may have to come back out to be cut once the engine is in, though, but that is to be expected.

The plug on the truck alternator I purchased is different than on the harness, so I have a Corvette alternator on the way. I could change the plug out, but I'd rather not start modifying a brand new harness. I also ordered a sending unit/fuel pump bracket assembly and the Vette regulator/filter assembly; both should be in on Friday.

The fuel tank and lines are out, as is the TPI wiring and computer. We'll do some detailing on the front suspension, frame, and brakes while we are at it.

Here is the original tank. I was surprised how small it is.

This afternoon was mostly spent cleaning, painting, and detailing parts. The lowering springs will go in tomorrow. Since we are this far in, and have to break the spindles loose anyway, we will remove, clean, and repaint the a-arms, spindles, sway bar, steering linkage, and the steering box.The whole underside is getting pressure washed, and freshened up before any parts go back on. We should also get the new battery box in tomorrow.

Thanks Jim! The headers are BRP/Musclerods/Hedman # 45036. They sell them direct for $699, but I am a dealer for them and can knock $20 off that (Summit sells them for $879.95!). If you want a set, send me your address and I'll get a shipping quote from BRP.

As you can imagine, this is already an expensive project (everything is new), but the owner is interested in doing a brake upgrade if we can do it affordably. I have some ideas, including possibly C5/6 parts in the front, and 4th gen F-body rear. That way, if there is ever an issue on the road, repairs are not a big deal.
We're going to look into selling all the takeoffs. That should easily pay for the whole 4 wheel disc conversion. The 305 and TH700R4 wouldn't be cost effective to ship, but if anyone is interested in the other components (the complete TPI, the Concept One accessory drive, the ball milled aluminum valve covers, a like new radiator, etc), let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Neil,
The front springs are from Hotchkiss, part # 1902F. They are going on the car now. The existing front springs were heated originals, which are being trashed. I'm not sure what brand the rear are, but I'll find out.

We got a lot done today. The whole front supension and steering has been removed, and all the components have been cleaned up and painted. Chris and I took off to the local Pull-A-Part after lunch, and got the spindles we will be using. They are from a 2002 S-10 Blazer 2WD, and are a direct bolt in replacement for the G-body (and earlier S10) spindles.

The front brakes are going to be a pretty cool, yet relatively inexpensive, setup. We could have just as easily snagged the 2 piston calipers and rotors that came on these spindles, and had a decent upgrade, but with over 500hp on tap we're going to need more than decent. I had originally expected to do some spindle cutting, and using an aftermarket bracket on the original spindles, but a talk with Tobin at Kore3 put me on the right track. He advised using the S10 Blazer spindles and hubs, since its already set up to accept a 2 piston style caliper, and he has a bracket kit that will allow the use of C5/C5Z06/or base C6/Z51 calipers. I'll be using the C6 Z51 style abutments (brackets), and the corresponding 13.3 inch rotors. Jeff Tate has ordered the abutments for me, and I'm still checking around on the rotors and calipers, but it looks like the total parts bill for the front discs will be about $7-750. Using F-body stuff for the rear, and a C5/C6 master cylinder, we'll have a serious 4 wheel disc braking system for less than a grand!

We just received the new front rotors. They are C6 "J55" front rotors, from the Z51 suspension package. They use standard C5/C5 Z06/C6 base calipers (all the same), but a taller abutment. The calipers and pins are on the way, and the abutments should be in today also.

Comparing the old rotors to the new is like comparing tea saucers to trash can lids!

Joe, will the paint & interior be staying? refreshed? Looks like its a mechanical update, more or less.

looks great so far. My wife is gonna kill me when she finds out I picked up an '89 Mazda 323 Wagon for the next "mini project"... I have a complete 2.2L turbo stroker engine a guy wants, but he doesn't hvae the mechanical ability to do the swap. So it'll be a money maker to finance the King Cobra.

Nice work, good to see someone using all top=shelf parts.

We're not doing anything with the interior or paint, just mechanicals. The car is in very good shape paint and interiorwise...not flawless, but far nicer than most G-bodies I run across. It gets more attention than just about any car that has ever been in my shop.
We have repainted the engine compartment (semi gloss black), and are painting the frame, and coating the underbody with spray-on bedliner. There will be a lot of paint detailing on the smaller parts...gas tank and straps, etc...and all new lines run for fuel and brakes...but the focus of this build is on the mechanicals. We love doing full builds, but we also do quite a few like this one (engine and transmission swaps/upgrades, along with suspension and brake upgrades, on a basically sound or finished car). We're doing a '67 Camaro like that now. Honestly, I prefer jobs like this one, since its easy to get bogged down in the paint and bodywork, and those are often "budget killers"!

Question - are you going to paint that gold plated crap on the brackets?

I think its some kind of plating they put on metal. I've had a few swaybar brackets that have been covered in it, and after a few years start to rust out. So everytime I see that type metal finish, I always scuff it and spray bomb it.

Also - nice choice on the z51 brakes - I still have my setup sitting in storage till I can bolt them on a project car, haha.

BulldawgMusclecars
05-14-2011, 12:39 PM
Yes, definitely...it looks good now, but I agree, it will be rusty in no time. I have a few items that I may just powder coat, if I can get it done quickly enough so as not to hold up the build too much.

To me, after looking at the options, the Z51s are pretty much a no-brainer. Sure, the rotors cost a little more than a regular C5 rotor (I paid about $90 each with my discount from O"Reilly's), but for the price of a cheaply made, Chinese stock-size disc brake kit for an old musclecar we're getting something proven, and that can be serviced easily anywhere. There are probably more pad choices for a C5/C6 than anything on the road. I'm duplicating this setup on my son's 87 GN when we get the build started, hopefully sometime this summer. He's not quite 13, so we hav a little time to get it done.

Thanks Kevin! We're pretty excited about it too. If all goes well we should be bolting in the LS3 and transmission tomorrow!

Right now we're getting the steering box and steering linkage cleaned up, and I just ordered the rear brake setup from Hawk's. We'll be using late 4th gen F-body rear discs (98-02 Camaro/Firebird). I spoke to Tobin at KORE3 about the brake system, and he advised that while we could go C5/C6, we would be giving up the parking brake to work with our existing rearend, due to the offest of the rear Vette rotors. If we used 9" Torino style housing ends, it could all be bolted up and made to work, but thats more fab/time than we want to spend for what would be a marginal improvement. The F-body rear rotors are 11.93 inches, so the stopping power will be very good, and we'll still retain the parking brake (which to me is vital for a street car). We'll get some replacement rotors that are drilled to match the fronts, and detail paint them to look more like the front discs. We'll use the original master cylinder, and a Wilwood combination valve. I'll be fabbing all the brake lines.

BTW, I'd like to thank Tobin at KORE3 for all his help in setting up the brake system. He is a wealth of information, and I'd recommend him and his products to anyone looking to do a brake upgrade.

I spent a good part of the day chasing parts and talking to customers, so now that the shop is quiet I'm getting some stuff done. Fortunately my crew got lots of cleaning and detailing done while I was busy, so hopefully we'll be installing the engine in the morning. Still lots to do before its ready to fire.

The original Corvette pan was still on the engine, so I decided to get started on changing it out for the "musclecar" pan.

I just removed the pan, and the pickup, before remembering I should be taking pics. Doh! Its been a long day. The widage tray isn't much different than the replacement (different part #s, and a few subtle differences).

We ran into a small issue with the front brakes yesterday...not engough clearance from the spokes to the calipers, which is a common issue with this type of wheel. Its going to require a little too much to use a slip-on style wheel spacer, so we are going with some billet wheel adapters that will give us the extra clearance. Fortunately, they aren't too expensive, and since they bolt up o the hub just like a wheel would, and then use another set of lugs for the actual wheel, they are safe. I'll post pics when they come in (hopefully tomorrow or Friday).

We did get some other goodies in yesterday...some of the fuel system fittings, and the new Afco radiator. Its designed specifically for LS swaps, and has the correct size inlet and outlet to work with LS-style hoses. Adapters to splice 2 different hose sizes are available, but I'd rather not use them unless absolutely necessary, since its just adding 2 more places to leak on each hose. We also started planning the fuel pickup mods, and built a prototype, and we're hopefully going to get the final version done today, and get it in the tank. On non-wagon swaps, you could just bolt in a Buick GN-style pump/sending unit...that is the unit we are using, with a Holley 255lph pump...but for wagons, the tank is much deeper, and the pickup and float assembly need to be positioned further down. The same may be true on El Caminos, but I don't have one here to verify that.

You can see in some shots there is a little aluminum foil...that was for "quick masking" some areas when the firewall and underside was being sprayed. We're not going for the Ridler here, but want a good, fresh, clean surface with a stock look, to better show off the engine. There are still a few touchups to be made here and there, and the routing of the new brake and fuel lines, and the rear mounted battery, will start tomorrow. We're still waiting on the rear brakes (thought they would be here by now).

I had been thinking about asking Tom, the car's owner, if he was interested in taking the car on the upcoming Hot Rod Power Tour, but he beat me to it! I'll probably be on the Tour from the start, and meeting up with him in Montgomery, to convoy up to Indy. So, if you see the car on the Tour, come introduce yourself!

We got the rear disc brakes in from Hawk's Third Gen today http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com and there was a problem with the rear calipers...someone had done some enthusiastic grinding on them, probably in an attempt to fit their 15" drag wheels. Hawk's owners, Bruce and BJ Hawkins, were very apologetic and got replacements item out today for me...after texting me a picture of them to be sure they met my approval. Mistakes happen, but the mark of true good businesspeople is correcting the problem. I have purchased parts from Hawks many times in the past, and will continue to do so.

Got a couple of goodies to show you guys today. First, the billet wheel adapters. These bolt up in the same manner a wheel would, and will give the extra clearance needed due to the location of the calipers and the curvature of the wheel spokes. I had hoped this wouldn't be an issue, but its always a possibility with this type of wheel. Its an easy enough fix, and relatively inexpensive. Note the adapters are set up for 5 on 4.5 and 5 on 4.75, so you could use the same adapter to run a GM pattern wheel on a Ford or Mopar.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/IMG_0889-1.jpg

Here is one of the adapters installed.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/IMG_0893-1.jpg

Here is the Wilwood combination valve. I'll mount it a little lower on the frame, out of sight yet still accessible.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/IMG_0890-1.jpg

The battery box, from Summit Racing. Its being installed in the spare tire well, to clean up the underhood area as well as help with traction. Since the car has a convential lead acid battery, rather than a gell cell, we'll have to run a vent tube to let any hydrogen gas escape. Its a good practice to add one anyway, just in case you ever have to put in a conventional battery.

Almost forgot, the brake pads we are using are Performance Friction Z-Rated, for a C5/C6 application. They are a good performance pad, without being too grabby, and also have the advantage of not dusing as heavily as some pads. More time cruising, less time polishing those Americans!

It comes in very handy, especially for semi-finished "late model" (showing my age there!) vehicles! On a full build we would remove everything, but its isn't practical to do so in this case.

I spent some time in the shop this weekend, but didn't get much done on Grocery Getter. I did mount the Wilwood combination valve to the frame with some ARP stainless bolts, and started to bend the hard lines for the brakes, but then I realized that I didn't have the right size fittings on hand. I started on the final version of the fuel pump/sending unit assembly, though, and should get that finished up in the morning. Once that goes in the tank, we'll reinstall the tank, mount the AC Delco filter/regulator assembly, and start running the new hard line. We'll modify the housing ends to accept the disc brake components, too, and get the car "rolling" again. Hopefully the new rear rotors, and the calipers, will be in tomorrow.

The shop is getting hectic, but fortunately we have had some additions to our crew lately to keep up with the demand. We're finishing up a Boss 347 swap on a '67 GT500E convertible, reassembling a '67 Camaro after some suspension and brake upgrades, doing bodywork on a '66 Mustang GT, and installing a Vintage Air unit on a '72 Buick GS. Fortunately, we're used to long days!

Joe - I think I've seen this car in the SE section of CorvetteForum - probably the Power Tour 2011 thread....

As for those pads - hate to say it - unless PF has reformulated those pads they still dust quite a bit - I had them on Chevy Beretta and they dusted pretty well.

Not nearly as bad as my Hawk HPS pads I have with my C6Z brake setup.

Bonecrusher,
That's more what I meant...they don't dust badly for a performance pad.

Sorry for being a little slow to update the last couple days...things have been pretty crazy around the shop, and there are lots of pictures to take at this point.

Here is one of the things we have come up with to make LS swaps a little bit easier. When pulling or installing an engine, most guys use a chain, or in the case of a carbureted engine, a lift plate. The only problem with a Gen III/IV engine is that the intake is plastic and easily marred with a chain, even if you're careful, and a conventional lift plate with a 4 barrel pattern on it is useless.

Several years ago, I purchased a lift plate from TPI Specialties in Minnesota, called "The Happy Hooker". It was designed to allow easy engine removal from the top on LT1 and LT4 equipped vehicles. Basically, it bolted to the fuel rail bolts on top of the intake, and the curved portion with the loop allowed the engine to be manuevered from under the cowl, turned sideways in the engine compartment, and removed. It was very handy for those cars, but TPIS also drilled it for several popular carb patterns so it could be used on any carbureted engine. Fortunately, they made the plate pretty large, so additional patterns could be drilled in it. I drilled this one to bolt up to the valley cover, so the intake can simply be removed and put aside. I will be offering our own, improved version of this lift plate for sale in the near future.

Corvette alternator installed. The truck alternator would have worked, but the wiring connector was different and I didn't want to modify the new GM harness.

The rear disc brake e-brake system. This setup is 4th gen Camaro, which works but isn't a direct bolt on. That is what drills and grinders are for!

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/IMG_0933-1.jpg

Here is a better shot of the e-brake cable brackets. These are cut-down F-body pieces from Hawk's. The originals sandwiched the LCA, and had an extra bracket that tied in at the panhard. Way overkill. We cut them down, painted them, and bolted them on with the LCA bolt.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/IMG_0929-1.jpg

These pics are a little dark, but you can see the original housing end was cut down and 2 extra holes drilled at the top to mount the F-body e-brake assemblies. This is very easy to do with a cutoff wheel and a good drill bit. I'll be doing another one soon, and will make a template for the modification. This one is on a tight schedule, and I didn't get any pics in time.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/IMG_0932-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/IMG_0931-1.jpg

I know some of you G-body guys are thinking...what are you doing about the clearance issue with the rear shocks? The banjo bolt for the rear caliper, and the line itself, will hit the shock tube. The conventional thinking is that the calipers need to be rotated (which sounds like too much of a pain), but if you look at the shock mounts, the solution is pretty simple.

On this car, there were spacers between the shock and shock mount that exacerbated the problem. So, they were removed...but still, not enough clearance. Shocks will accept a slight misalginment from their stock position (since they are mounted with rubber at the top), and the shock mounts themselves have a flat spot inboard of where the shocks are originally mounted. So, carefully mark and drill new holes. The old holes can be welded up, but I don't feel that they compromise strength in any way, so they can be left there if you wish.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/IMG_0930-1.jpg

As I mentioned previously, Tobin at KORE3 advised that the stock master cylinder would work well with this conversion, so we are keeping it and the factory brake booster. If you like Hydro-Boost, a factory unit from a "hot air" pre-'86 GN is a bolt in for any of these cars. We are bending all new lines for the car.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/IMG_0927-1.jpg

The Wilwood combination valve, mounted below the frame. I have started running the brake lines in this picture.

Where exactly is that Proportion valve mounted at? Is it in the stock g-body location or something completely different?

Its in the wheelwell, on the bottom side of the frame, with the knob pointed out. The stock location isn't good for an adjustable valve, with its proximity to the hot exhaust (1 7/8 header tubes in this case). There is too much of a possibility of burns. It could have gone under the master cylinder, like most people do it, but I've never liked that for appearance reasons. I wanted to move all the connections underneath for a cleaner look, without interfering with jacking or putting the car on a 2 post lift. That is really a concern on this build, since it isn't a local car (I'm in GA, the owner lives in West Virginia), and it may be serviced by people who aren't familiar with the car.The knob isn't that easy to get to, but it clears the wheel and doesn't interfere with anything else. It will be dialed in before the car leaves here, anyway, so adjustment won't really be needed.

Have you test fitting the headers in the car yet?

Looked back a few pages and didn't see them mounted.

You basically building one of my dream projects I've had rolling around in my head the last few years...

BulldawgMusclecars

In the pics, the trans wasn't bolted up, so we wanted to to do that first, then fit the headers. The engine was just sitting on the mounts (bolts in, with a couple nuts on to keep it relatively steady). I'm sure it will have to be lifted off the mounts some, esp on the drivers side. On these engines, the torque convertor bolts are accessed through a hole in the bellhousing (for the starter), so I was reluctant to install the headers ahead of time. I imagine clearance will be tight with the 1 7/8 tubes.

I'm about to lock up the shop tonight, after a long day! I got here at 7am, and we just finished up. Thanks to Chris (C5Golfguy) and Clark for sticking it out today, in the near 100 degree heat and high humidity, to really make some progress.

The GMPP harness is set up for an older style oil pressure sending unit (the small plug one at the top), and the LS376/480 comes with the larger, late Corvette style. We switched this out rather than alter the harness.

The transmission cooler line fittings that were supposed to fit...and didn't. We wound up buying a pair of 9/16-18 to AN6 steel adapter fittings from a local hydraulic supply for $2 each (rather than the $27.30 Summit gets for the ones that don't fit).

We had the usual bugs to work out the last several days, but thanks to the hard work of Chris, Jeremy, Clark, Curt, and Jose Project Grocery Getter was a success! After shakedown runs last night and this morning, and a few last minute fixes, we hit the road for Nashville, TN and joined up with the Hot Rod Power Tour!We got there pretty late, but still had a chance to talk to Vic Edelbrock Jr and his wife and daughter, and speak to a few G-body fans.
If you were there and didn't see us, we will be headed to Indy in the morning (after a quick stop to the Vette Museum), and plan to spend the day there.
I'd also like to report that with zero extra tuning, we knocked down 26.3 MPG, and temps didn't go over 205 degrees, even in the 95+ degree heat. Not bad for a 500hp Grocery Getter.

Thanks guys! Project Grocery Getter is now back with Tom in West Virginia, but I don't think you've seen the last of it! I have a few updates to make tomorrow, with lots of pics, but for now I'm beat after the thrash to get the car finished and Power Touring from Nashville to Muskegon. I left West Virginia midmorning yesterday, and just got home around 10 last night. I'm working on another project of sorts today (can't talk about it yet), but on a related subject we will be doing another G-body soon as a "shop car"... "Project GNxcess"! If anyone has or knows of a good straight Regal body somewhere in the southeast, please let us know. As the name hints, it will be turbocharged, but it won't be a V6!

Damn - missed this car on the Power Tour...

You missed a hell of a time at the long hauler event on Saturday.

You missed a hell of a time at the long hauler event on Saturday.

We were late making it to Nashville, and got to Indy early...through a little creative parking, I was able to get the car inside the midway and park it right beside GMPP. We made it to Muskegon, but after a long couple of weeks in the shop (100+ hrs), and going straight into the tour, I was (and still am) completely beat. The rain leaving the hotel on Friday morning didn't help.Sorry I missed you, and the long hauler event. I'll be back next year, hopefully in a single turboed, LS powered '80s Regal
(GNXcess)...and hopefully, without the last minute thrash!

Ok, just uploaded some from my digital camera...there are more on my iPhone, and Chris has some on his camera too that we will get uploaded later. The exterior shots of the car are in front of the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Sorry for the lousy quality of the other pics...I was the driver and photographer.

Am I seeing this right that the crossmember is mounted to the bottom of the frame rails rather than on top like stock?

I am working on doing a similar swap into our 88 MCSS but we are using a 200-4r behind the LS3 using the Muscle Rods LS Swap kit. We are having some issues with the crossmember hitting the floorpan on the drivers side when it is placed on the top of the frame rails.

I've read that this can be a body bushing issue, but this is a 20k mile car that we are starting with. Do you have any thoughts on this?

even the oem crossmember mounts to the bottom of the rails... I dont think you would ever have the room for bolts and the crossmember on top of them

Oh ok. I figured that the Malibu would be very similar, if not the same, to the Monte Carlo and Cutlass but apparently I was wrong.

nope you were right the frames are the same for the g-bodies except the elky's have a longer wheelbase

That shot was during the initial mock up, before the holes were drilled for mounting the crossmember. It actually installs to the top of the frame. It was only bolted up this way to mark the hole location.

This car had more like 100k, and we didn't have any issues with body bushings, or florrpan clearance. If you haven't already, call BRP and ask for Jeff or Nick. They can get you straightened out.

I looked at the pic again I thought he meant the top of the frame rail (like between the body and frame) but ya'll are talking about the top of the bottom flange....excuse me I'm not usually this slow:pat:

I've tried getting ahold of BRP for the last few days but I haven't been able to reach anyone. I also left a message the other day on what I think may be Phil's cell phone (got the number from Chris @ Hedman) but I got no response.

HELLO PRO TOURING WORLD

Finally I have an update on Project Grocery Getter. I got her back from Bulldawg muscle cars and the Power Tour in Mid June and have been steadily working to improve her to what I considered to be a world class vehicle. The following is a list of what I have done since the initial build.

1. The AC compressor on early Chevrolet Malibu V8's was located on the drivers side and LS engine conversion's locate's the compressor on the passenger side. Solution is 1986 V8 Olds Cutlass used passenger side AC compressor and we installed a new condenser from that year cutlass which eliminated AC hose's running across the front of the LS engine.

2. Installed a new AC Delco evaporator from Auto Parts Warehouse .com.

3. Had all new AC hose's the correct length for the changes made at local hose shop.

4. When you install an LS engine in G-body cars the engine is moved slightly to the passenger side for clearance issues and a drive shaft safety loop purchased over the internet caused the drive shaft to make contact with the loop. A local machine fabrication shop made me a loop out of 1/4" steel solving the clearance problem and worked out perfectly.

5. Removed the stock G-body radiator overflow canister and replaced with a Moroso Aluminum canister from Jeg's.

6. Replaced both transmission cooling lines with #6 AN braided steel hoses.

7. Purchased 2 front inner fender panels from Chicago Muscle cars, restored them and replaced the reproduction units. I had purchased earlier because they was brittle and shattered in use.

8. Replaced the stock 83 Malibu instrument cluster with a panel out of an 1986 Monte Carlo SS which gave me a 115 MPH speedometer. Also replaced the instrument circuit board with a new NOS circuit board Also installed shift indicator for OD Transmission equipped cars.

9. Installed a mew Sun Pro Tach with shift light on the A Pillar.

10. Replaced both upper control arms.

11. When you remove the front bumper and rear support braces as well as the LS aluminum engine you loose 250 to 300# off of the front end creating a suspension that is completely out of whack. To solve this problem I had the car professionally weighed by Rocket Chasis and the car weighed in at 3452 pound with a full tank of fuel. 883# pass front 939# driver front 819# pass rear 811# driver rear. With this info I was put in touch with Afco racing spring and a set of 900# 11" Street stock springs was installed along with Bell Tech S10 2" drop spindles and a new set of Bell tech shocks. After a front end alignment the car goes down the road straight with a decent level of ride.. Also a 1 1/4" sway bar and links was correctly installed.

12. Replaced all 4 wheels with a set of Foose 18x7 Front and 18x9 on Rear. Mickey Thompson Drag Radials on the rear. an additional set of wheels and tires for rally use is in the plans.

13. Tinted the windows with 20% tint.

14. Installed a ZEX 150 HP wet nitrous system complete with pressure gauge, safely evacuation tube and a MSD timing twister to retard the timing when NOS is used.

15. Installed the Abbott X Box for the speedometer and works perfectly.

16. Also and definitely the most importantly is to thank all of the people that made this car possible.

1. BULLDAWG MUSCLE CARS
2. DINK LOVE at LOVE PAINT
3. BILL CLARK
4. SCOTT MILES
5. STEVE STUTLER
6. JEFF PLETCHER
7. RANDY AMOS
8. PAUL CARVELLI
9. MARK SIMMS
10. JEFFRO at COMPTON METAL'S

This car is unbelievable handles like a slot car stops on a dime, unbelievable acceleration.

Everything I dreamed it could be.

Thanks for the update Tom! I'm glad to see that the Malibu is everything you wanted it to be. This project meant a lot to all of us here at Bulldawg, and we hope that you get many, many years of enjoyment out of it. You deserve it.

BTW, I like the artwork on the ZEX bottle! Your way of saying the car is "the cat's ***" ?

I was getting ready for work this morning ,and got a phone call from West Virginia. I immediately had a bad feeling, and unfortunately that feeling was legitimate. Tom Gerrard, the owner of Grocery Getter and a great friend, passed away yesterday. He had been battling cancer for quite some time, refusing all treatment, and his last several months were spent planning his ultimate, and last, hot rod. It was a great honor to not only meet Tom, but to be chosen to transform his wagon from a nice custom to a true Pro Touring car. He was not feeling well enough to drive it on Power Tour, though he did his best to hide it, but fortunately he did get a chance to drive it to a car show in Charleston recently, and apparently really enjoyed it. I only got to know Tom for a short time, but he was a great man and a great friend, and he will be missed. A major project I am working on, but can't talk about at this point, is being dedicated to him. Rest in peace, Tom.

That's too bad to hear, the loss of another hot rodder with great ideas and vision for his ride. At least you guys got it together in time enough for him to enjoy before passing. I hope it goes that way for all of us when our time is up. RIP Tom and prayers to his family.

Thanks guys. Tom's passing wasn't a surprise...he told me of his condition shortly before his car was trailered down to the shop...but it still hit me really hard. We put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into this car to have it finished for Power Tour, and even after the last 100+ hour week in the shop, it was all worth it seeing Tom's reaction as we met up with him just outside the stadium in Nashville.

I just got a call from the family, and it looks like Grocery Getter may be going up for sale. I should know more tomorrow, and will let you guys know. This would make someone a very sweet car.

Thanks Kissy! Please let us know if there is anything we can do. I saw the eBay auction, and that the car didn't sell.

BTw, I'm not sure if you saw this, but Tom's friend Mich (the guy from NY who bought his old Malibu) sent me a link to a video dedicated to Tom.

Although Tom's passing was expected, it is still very unfortunate. I'm glad he got a chance to experience a ride in a hot rod built by someone that really cares about the cars he touches.

I'm happy to announce that Project Grocery Getter has found a new home! No, I didn't buy it...though if I had thought that it would go so cheap, I would have! Its new owner is located in Florida, and he is very excited about the purchase. We had originally spoken about building another wagon similar to Grocery Getter, but he found that the original was still for sale, and made a deal! The wagon should be in its new home by the end of the week!

hello and i would like to thank you for the very very very insightful thread on this project!! im wanting to do something similar to this in my olds wagon but the snag i ran into in the planning process is the gas tank fuel pump setup. i have a complete donor car to get everything i need but im curious as how did you modify the gas tank for the grand national fuel pump set up to work? i have done countless google searches and i know rock valley and tanks can build me a tank but i dont really have that kind of dough to sink into a tank. any help is greatly appreciated~~
