i pulled the trigger on a ls-2 for my 68 f body it has what i was told a corvette pan (no wing's) any way this is the question, i have seen where some folks have modified some of the stock pans to fit the first gen's and other's. so what would be the problem with the lh-8 pan (hummer pan) if you where to cut the sump to make it shorter? ok i get the obvious less oil but would it be enough to hurt it? or maybe i should notch the one that came with the motor. one more question a found a post that i thought was here where some one had posted all the ls pans to compare them but cant seem to find it agian?

Take a look at the Mast pan. They put a lot of thought into it. Shallow at the front, shallow LH8 sized sump.
there's a lot of questions to ask before you select a LS swap pan, will you be using stock style steering or rack-n-pinion, also do you want a remote oil filter arrangement or stock style, and does the pan you select require a different oil pick-up (do they also supply that) or can you use the stock one, hope that didn't confuse you any

I installed my mast pan yesterday. I am very happy with it.

i have a third gen steering box with a stock sub. i agree there are a lot of variables with the pan selection. i have been looking at the mast pan. the plans for this engine are a heads and bump stick a little down the road.for know i will leave it as is, that said i do plan on winding this engine up with the 4:11's that are in it and pulling some real g"s with this car. i for sure don't want to hurt it before i really get to enjoy it!from what i have read some folk's seem to have oil pressure issue's with some of the ls-2 so i want to be sure i have good oil control and plenty of it.

Rod pretty much nailed it. What I will add is I modified a F body pan (before Mast pan was out) much less than S&P does and it fits. I extended the pick up tube a little and modified the baffle plate so it would work and had to remove the cast in "V" on the bottom of the pan. Not on the road yet so no real idea of oil control yet but I will say if I had to do it over I would buy an aftermarket one like the Mast piece.

I ordered my oil pan from Mast today. I researched all of them, and this one came out on top.

If you have a stock truck pan already installed you will have everything you need. I have an LS2 out of a Trailblazer - the installation took about 30 minutes...
1. removed the stock pan
2. removed the pickup tube
3. installed Mast pickup
4. Drilled out stock pan gasket rivets
5. installed gasket onto mast pan (riveted the gasket back on)
6. installed and torqued pan. (mast provides three new allen head bolts for the rear of the pan
7. Install filter and LS1 oil level sensor (which are on the way for me).
slightly different than the stock pan...

i have the corvette pan, doe's it make a difference? what else will i need. not sure what your putting your engine in, but i was reading where some folks are swithing to the big block heater core to make a little extra room for the ls motor's in first gen f-body's. seem's like a good move has anyone else heard of this or done this? if you can would you post the dimensions of the mast pan?

There are no baffles at all in the Holley pan, its just a pan that holds oil, where the Mast pan had oil control in mind when they designed it....

the holley has a sump baffle like the mast, what other baffle's are in the mast?

holley pan is just a bucket of oil http://holley.com/360Degrees.asp?partNumber=302-1
mast pan http://www.mastmotorsports.com/2010/product-view.php?cat=Oil Pans&id=160 has baffles cast into the sump
Not saying the Holley pan is bad, just that the mast pan is better
The mast link won't work but go to www.mastmotorsports.com and you can see the pan under GEN IV products

Has anyone used the GMPP LS rear wheel drive muscle car pan? Its in the pace perf catalog for $150. Kit includes everything it seems:
pan
pickup tube & screen
pan gasket
pan bolts
windage tray
tray bolts
dipstick & tube
PART#19212593
I need a pan for a 5.3 in 68 firebird and was thinking of using this.

That is the Hummer pan as far as I know and it sits too low, roughly 2 inches below the crossmember.

I read somewhere that the Mast doesnt have the holes to bolt to the bell housing and Holley's pan does, is this true? If it is, how important is this?

It does not have the holes that bolt to the transmission bellhousing. I am sure that this makes the setup a little less strong, but I have no worry about it.

As Chris and others have stated.... The Mast pan is a super nice piece! I have sold and installed many of these since they have been out. They are a perfect fit in many applications. Been watching Chris.... Looking good bro!

Yeah Trav...too bad it took a while for you to be a Mast distributor... I bought my Mast pan as soon as the engine arrived at Brian's... BTW, the motor is in the car and we forgot to punch out the dip stick plug... Is it the one on the pax side and can we do it with the engine in the car??

Yea TC... its on the passenger side just forward of the starter in the block. You can do it with it in the car..... a little patience is required. Its basically a very small freeze plug. Im going to start sending out a sheet with the motors with this info on it to try and help solve this. Its very easy to over look this when doing the pan swap.

Yep... I had a minor freakout when I went to install the dipstick and there wasn't any hole to put it in :hmm:
Punched it into the pan and spent over an hour digging it out :). With the pan off it would have been a 30 second ordeal!
One of the many fun moments in the swap!

I just found this on their website, lots of pictures. It doesn't look those holes are there http://www.mastmotorsports.com/2010/pdf/mast_oil_pan_views.pdf My Keisler bellhousing doesn't have the holes to bolt to the pan either.

Thanks Travis! I'll make sure I let Brian know... I was at the shop yesterday and he is almost finished with a track car that needed to be done for a guy (bumped my car to the back burner). Brian should start hitting it this weekend!
