Wow, that sure goes back a bit.
I remember seeing the Boydster in 93, wearing some very cool billet wheels at the time.
I am not sure if other manufacturers were out there at that time, but it seemed to me
that Boyd was a leader in that area, if not 'the' leader.
It may have been incredibly good salesmanship, but thanks to him, the wheel market grew
exponentially.

Not exactly how I remember it. Seem to recall that lil' John did the first billet wheels, but, and I think I'm paraphrasing him here, he thought there was only a market for a few dozen sets. lil john was on the leading edge of billet. Less well known than Coddington, but Coddington was much better at self-promotion.
I worked for Boyd when he had the shop in Stanton CA right down the street from Knotts Berry Farm, Man the 80's were good times,,,:hand: did i just show my age? I even had Boyds on My Family Volvo wagon back then!!! :rotfl:

You are right Twentyover, lil John actually figured out how to build the first billet wheels. He built several sets for himself and his son, but he didn't see the potential beyond just a few sets so he taught his friend Boyd how to do it. Boyd made the billet wheel a commercial product and it went upward and outward from there.

Lil' John Buttera and his son Chris were awesome fabricators and did a lot to migrate the street rod influences to the muscle cars. Anyone remember the 69 Camaro and then later on the 65 Nova with the Vette chassis in Hot Rod? Hell! Lil' John built race cars for Drags and Indy too!
I still have a set of his rare "Hollywood" two piece billets he made for a custom Sport Truck project we did back in 90! That was when Brad Fanshaw who now runs Bonspeed with Michael Anthoney, worked for Boyd.
The name still moves on....
