Run Flat Tire Mounting Machine?

My new wheels(Boyd Coddington) came in today at my buddies tire store and he is having problems trying to get them mounted. He called Boyds and they told him he needs a run flat machine to mount them. He said he doesnt know what a run flat machine is. He has had his Les Schwab tire store for almost 20 years and has done run flat tires alot with no problems. Yesterday he did a set of 18's and 19's on a newer vette with run flat tires and they went on fine. So what exactly is a run flat tire machine and where might we look for someone that has one? He is 130 miles from me so I wont be able to go take a look till the weekend. The wheels are the F-22 style, 18x12 and 18x10 with 335/30/18 and 275/35/18 michelin pilot sport tires.

Hello,

First lets make sure your wheel is not a reverse mount and if I could get a pic I could tell you. If it is then this may explain the problem. When mounting short profile tires especially 30 and 35 series some machines with out assistance can ruin your day. You have to get the top bead started below the rim drop opposite of the run flat sensor and as it spins around again you need a second hand to help pull the tire away from the sensor as you do the last 1/3 spin on the tire mounting. Also as your mounting the tire make sure the tire bead is riding on the machine shoe and not below or it will bind up, rip the bead or gouge the billet wheel. Lots of lube is key here also. If you would call me with the work order or reference number on the wheels I will call Boyd to make sure if the reverse mount is required on the wheels. F-22 is a soft lip wheel, requires reverse mounting. (from the backside) Any reputable tire shop should be able to mount them for you.

i work at les schwab tire center in eureka ca the run flat tire just has a stiff side wall that's all ask the manager of the store to help you if he cant do it have him call me at store#609 any one form les schwab that has bin there longer than 5 years can do anything i have never ran into a tire i couldn't fix, mount, dismount, balance etc. I have worked in many les schwab tire stores in three states MT, ID, and CA

Mitch is exactly right. The tire is most likely old and stiff, especially being a run flat. I know, even with our big bad ass Snap-on machine, it still takes two of us, and precise workmanship to get those suckers off.

My advise, coming from a Viper pilot, is to ditch the run flats and run the viper-spec ps2s. Vipers get special tread compounds. Call tire rack or JonB (viper tire specialist) for the correct ones. A lot of viper racers, however, are switching to others brands like Kumhos since Michelin no longer sponsors our ViperDays races. Hoosiers seem to be the hottest track tire, but many still like the Pilot sport Cup. I've been running the cups for a while, but am going to try Toyo or Kumho next.

there is no such thing. Im a store manager at a tire shop. You just need to fig out which way the rim should be mounted and then mount the tire like any other tire
