Ok now that the 63 F100 is coming to a close I have another project in the works. I was asked to take a 1946 Pontiac 4 door straight 8, three on the tree and turn it into some thing that would keep up with todays traffic, but had to be able to take it anywhere and buy parts on the go. So here is what we have come up with. Fatmans Mustang II front sub frame, LS1 GTO Engine and Trans. New Interior (stock looking) and leave the Old Paint that being the "SLEEPER LOOK". O and this is the first time it has been out of the garage in 15 years.

Bitchin car, will make a great cruiser. If you haven't already bought the fatman stuff here is an alternative. http://frameupwheelworks.smugmug.com/Projects/Chuck-and-Barb-Stikas-1940/11031768_JAEto#771705165_d8er6
It starts getting interesting at about page 3
It worked out really nice and is way beefier than a MII style setup.
Good Luck

I never said that it would not be welded. Fatman takes my measurements and makes the front sub to be welded In.
First thing was to get the front clip off and set the car up level and get all the measurements.

Next was to cut the old front off after all the Measurements were checked again.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/12/46pontiac0011-1.jpg
Now time to test fit the new front.

A lot of guys use 2nd gen F body subframes to mate with early Pontiacs....I've seen a couple with very good results.
I'd have loved to do the same to my old 52 Pontiac, but the registration authorities here don't allow frame chops like this....grrrrrr.
Nice project!

Well Ive got the LS1 pulled and every thing ready to mock up. Im going to try to use the stock GTO engine mounts and header but It looks like the GTO headers will not work ( you will see why later ).
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/02/100_5292-1.jpg
Here you can see why I cant use the stock GTO headers, they come out on top of the frame. So it looks like Maybe a set of Sanderson LS1 Blockhugger Headers are the best bet. If you guys know of some thing better please tell, This is my first Ls1 Install.

Looks like the stock mounts are going to work out ok pluse keeping them helps with the steering rod witch is close to everything. Im just starting to make the mounts so dont worry gussets will be In place tomorrow, but for now you can see how its coming together.
I love cutting out mounts.

Cool project. One thing I see that I think you need to address if you are not planning to. I don't see where you sleeved the clip so you need to weld some plates on the outside where your seam is. Just butt welding the frame is going to be too big of chance to fail.

I will, I just tacked them in place and bolted them on to see how they were going to line up with the frame. Pulse I wanted to hang them to see if the steering rod was going to be in the way of the boxing plates. If you guys see anything else please add.

I'm not talking about the motor mounts I saw where you said you will gusset them I was referring to where the old frame is spliced into the MII frame. If you did not sleeve the inside of it I think you need to overlap the seam with some plates. I am only looking at pictures but it looks like the two pieces are pretty much just butt welded? I would not trust for such a saftey related issue to to be held together like that.

Well she's back on the ground with the front sheet metal back on. I had to trim 14 1/2" off the Inner fender to get it to clear but other then that It set right In place. I will take the metal I turned up on the Inner fender and weld it back so that you can't tell I trimed it ( see Picture ). Next is to get the new Rear In and set the back down. O and the engine set down in between the fenders really nice too.

I wish I was that good...lol. I took the plates and put them in the sub frame first, then drilled hole and plug welded the plated to the sub frame. The slide every thing together and drill more holes on the stock frame and plug weld them. Next weld the main seam together and use the stock frame holes to inspect the welds from Inside. So now you have a full weld in the middle with the plates to act like a bridge and then you have all your plug welds on the sides. This picuter just dont show the plugs drilled.

Worked on the steering today. Ended up having to use three Joints to get the steering to clear the headers but everything lines up really good I think. I've still got to pick up a bearing for the bottom of the column but other then that she's nailed down.
Here you can see how much I had to come away from the headers.

Do you guys think a 2.73 posi rear end will be to high of a gear for this car with the ls1 and 4l60e trans? Remember gas is getting higher and this car will get used alot on the street not the track. I just dont want to kill the Performance. What is your alls take on this?
Motorcitydak
03-02-2011, 09:09 PM
What are the gear ratios of the trans? Rear tire size? Most importantly, what does the owner want the car to do? Another thing that must be considered is the power band of the motor. If it makes good torque over 3000rpm, then maybe a higher gear is needed. Id say check what the stock car would spin at 70mph and try to match that
r.a.w.rods
03-03-2011, 06:16 PM
Its all stock 04 GTO LS1 and Trans. I went back and looked at the stock rear end ratio and it was a 3.46 gear. The trans was a 3.06 1st, 1.63 2nd, 1.00 3rd, .70 4th. So Im thinking now maybe a 3.73 because the tires will be around lets say 25-27" tall, and I just found out he wants to pull a small motorcycle too...lol. So I think I better change to some thing lower.
Motorcitydak
03-03-2011, 06:54 PM
In that case, Id say that you are right on the money with that 3.73. Since this car will be heavier and less aerodynamic than the GTO, it could use some help in the final drive ratio to let it move around easily at 70-80
r.a.w.rods
03-04-2011, 03:57 PM
I finished up the stock steering column today. First thing I did was cut the steering tube and rod down to where I need it.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/03/46pontiac074-1.jpg
Next I picked up a bearing for a Go-kart that works great for the old column tubes. Its 1 3/8" OD and 3/4 In the center.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/03/46pontiac075-1.jpg
After that I ran a new horn wire and redrilled the hole so I could use the stock braket that holds the wire down. Then I pressed in the new bearing.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/03/46pontiac079-1.jpg
Last thing was to make the end of the stock steering rod into a DD shaft so I could put a new joint on the end. Now I can bolt it too the car.
Keeps that sleeper look when people look Inside the car and all they see is stock parts...lol

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/03/46pontiac082-1.jpg
Then I moved on to the Sway Bar. I made some plates that go Inside the frame so It would be easy to put your bolts In when the front Is Installed. I'll finish painting them when I pull every thing off for the last time.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/03/46pontiac097-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/03/46pontiac102-1.jpg
I also had to extend the Rack because the Pontiac track is wider. FatMan provides the part to do this. Just a matter of taking the rack apart and putting it back.

Today we removed the old heater box that was under the drivers seat. This left a big hold under the floor so we are making a block of panel to cover it up. Later donw the road when the car gets paint we can weld this new panel In. We also pulled the old wiring out from behind the dash.

Its a mustang rack (87-93) from fatman and then they send the adapter for this setup. I would give them a call and see what they have.

Well we got the car pulled apart today and welded up all the holes in the fire wall. We also Mocked up the fire wall brake pedal kit from speedway. Now that I know were the brake pedal hangs down at we can trim it back so it does not stick out so much. We also made a home made column holder on the floor so the stock column will stay put. Next we striped every thing back off and paint the front half of the frame and fire wall to look more pleasing for the LS1. Not really going for show as much as for go.

Today we got all the seals and gaskets, plugs, belts all that good stuff done on the LS1 before setting it back in the car. We put the front suspension back on and the front sheet metal to see how she was going to site. Looks like the front springs are going to need some work. Should have the wheels for the car next week and some bigger tires but this will give you a ideal so what were going with.

Now that the Truck show's are out of the way I can get back on the 46 Pontiac. We have all the holes In the fire wall welded up and the Brake booster In. Master will get some black paint later so it will blend In. As you can see we have started the wiring and trying to keep it as nice as we can. Its not going to be hidden like most of our show cars but still nice. The trunk wiring will be covered by Interior panels later. Steering rod's and joints are In and painted and the brakes are painted and back on for the last time.

I have been working on the fuel system for the 46 and have not had any luck with finding a gas tank for this car. So I decided to go with a 41-48 chevy EFI tank and just move my factory braces over so I could strap the chevy tank in place. I also made new T-bolts and straps to hold every thing together.
Stock location of brace.

Hey guys I need some help. I want to use my stock GM a/c compressor from my GTO with my Vintage Air system. I read some post that say you cant use the gm compressor because it dont work with the VA lines but I have there adapter to make it work so that I have taken care of. What Im not sure 100% about is the two wires that come out of the compressor. Can anyone tell me for sure that the green wire is the wire that I hook my VA system too and the black wire is just a ground wire.
The other thing that has me for a loop is I keep reading the the GTO compressor will freeze up my system and kill it? Why is that? I know I have seen other street rods running this compressor and have read other post were people have not had any problems, so can anyone post some light on the subject. O and one more thing why would Vingate Air have a Adapter for the compressor if its not good to use them?
Any help would be great. Thanks.

This kit is the Mastercool HYDRAULIC FLARING TOOL SET, I can do 45, 37 double and singal on any type of line and from 3/16 up to 1/2. Also does metric too. Yes I made the short line that you see in the picture above. My kit will do all the GM and Ford push lock Connetions. I love this kit, its not cheap but well worth it for what I do.

Not too much got done this week because my dad is in the Hospital getting two new Knees, but the good thing is he's up and walking and just about to get to come home. I did get a few things done in between running back and forth.

Just a thought......something that struck me looking at the battery location. Do you think perhaps putting on of those ON/OFF key style battery disconnects in the ground cable might be a good idea?
Just if something shorts and starts to burn, it'd be real hard getting to the battery to disconnect it.
Nice out of the way spot though...uses a dead space that would otherwise go to waste.

I do have one to put on when Im ready to hook the battery up for good. I took the pictures just to show what I had done and how I ran the cabels. Thats also why you see the "+" side of the battery not hooked up. The way that car looks, I'd seriously consider dumping the bling wheels and going with 15" painted steels with hubcaps and rings (wider than stock of course)....car would look great pretending to be stock.

Well just wanted to let every one know that the car is almost done. All that’s left is the Interior and I’m almost done with that too. I took the car on it first test drive/show and what a blast it was. I wasn’t sure if people would get what we were shooting for but looks like most of them really liked the ideal of taking a old solid car and making more modern. I even let the customer drive the car back to the shop after the show and I don’t think he could have smiled any harder then he was...lol. After we got out of the car he said he had not drive the car since 1996. So now that he’s happy I’m happy. Now its time too finish up and send her on the way. Here are two pictures from the show.
