Best Tires to run for the 200+ Tred wear rating and above events

I need some help in picking the best tires to run for the RTTH and other events. I guess they need to be 200 or abaove tread wear. I need a 335/xx/18 rear and a 245/xx/18 front size. I have a RA1 tire on there now but it's a 100 rating. I guess I could run them but it wouldn't count.

Any insight would help.

I believe many are running the KDW tires in these sizes for these 200+ TW events.

I run Michelin PS-2s for the GoodGuys and Pro-Touring events on our '66 Chevelle, but there are a few others that are less expensive just not in the sizes I need. I have run Falken Azenis RT-615s and Nitto NT-05s with good luck on some of our other cars. You will find quite a few people running the BFGs as well. For the money the Falkens or Nittos are hard to beat though.

I have the Falkens on my Falcon. But I am still building my rear suspension so no test time yet.

The "best" tire is the Michelin PS2 but you are going to pay for them. If you want to save a few bucks and still have the 200 UTQG the Nitto NT05 or Falken RT-615K are the way to go. The BFG KDW2 is a 300 UTQG and is comparable to the Nitto NT-555. Either way we are in Corona and can get you all of the above!

Just to throw a couple others in the mix, Bridgestone Potenza RE050A and Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1, no experience with either one...but they fall into the same category.

I run the Dunlops in 265/40/17. They are the preferred "street tire" in SCCA autocross in moderate temperatures. (Kumho XS is better in hot, Toyo is better in cold, but both of those are under 200TW... SCCA defines "Street tire" as 140TW or higher)

Unfortunately, size selection is very limited with the Dunlops, as they're mostly only available in common SCCA ST* class sizes. They worked perfect for me, since I run 265s on 17x9s, which happens to be the same sizes as the rules allow in STX. :)

Nitto NT05 will not work for him as they come in a widest of 295 for a 18" wheel from what I can see...

PS2 are very good but not worth the 50-70% premium IMO over other good tires... I have run them.

I was running some older GoodYear Eagle F1 supercar tires with TW 220, they were obviously stail. But they were predictable. However, I switched to Nitto NT-05's which at the first event seemed a little wormy/jellowy. That has seemed to go away at my second event and they have become quite predictable with great grip. I thought they offered some 18" widths upto 315's. I could be corrected but check the Nitto web site for sizes.

My favs are the PS-2 for a excellent all-around tire; very predictable, lots of grip, quiet on the highway, awesome braking, etc. Also, I was surprised by the performance of my 275/295 KDW tires, they managed 1g on the skidpad. Not bad for a relatively hard compound.

Also, the first thing to do with a treadwear rating is throw it out the window. Speak with people who actually use the tires you are considering, especially if they use them in a competition environment. Comparing a 100 TW to a 500 TW is one thing, but a 200TW tire can easily be a grippier, better driving tire than a 140TW tire.

Thanks for all the info guys. I need to stick to the 335/xx/18 size in the rear and the 245/xx/18 in the front. It's the feed back from people that have run them that really matters. I don't really care on the tread wear as long as it's over 200 and sticks. I guess there is no one tire every one is running? I guess the best is the PS2, if $ is not a question. What are most running in the way of lbs in each? I have raced Pro Motocross for years and some Shifter karts and Air Presure is critical. I know each car and set up will vary, but a general idea will help. I hope to shake out the car before the RTTH event in Feb.

My best advice for you has nothing to do with the tire ratings or tires but, get a wider tire for the front. Your split front to rear is too much.
