View Full Version : Updating my '69 Camaro

Well this has been in the works for a while. I've been wanting to mini-tub and update my Camaro for quite some time. And get rid of my beloved TTII's which everyone online hates  As you all know one thing leads to another. I've learned from the best on this site :D
I'm an oldschool, tried tested and true kind of person. I had been wanting a set of Fikse's for years. And when the company closed shop about a year ago I was crushed. Don't get me wrong, I love alot of the Forgeline, Rushforth, Boze, Newgen etc wheels. But when Frank from Prodigy posted some killer deals on some classic Fikse wheels I had to jump on it. I originally wanted the Profil 5s. But after I kept looking (many, many hours  ) at Jay's (JamesS113) Killer '69 Project, I decided that the FM5's were such a classic killer look and just fit the '69 Camaro so perfectly. I've always liked them since I saw them on the Mule and SW's '69 many moons ago.
So, on with the updates. I ended up ordering 18 x 8.5 fronts and 18 x 12 rears in Technipolish from Frank. I like polished wheels with the paint colour of my car the best. Again, a little oldschool but I think it works the best. Black and and dark centers look good, but more of an undertstated race theme. Not what I want for my car.
With the re-org of the company the wheels ended up taking about 6 months to get. I was patient to wait for what I always wanted. Frank helped stay on top of them to get them completed and delivered.
In the meantime I sent Frank and a few other suppliers like Speedtech about a million emails about rear suspensions and rear end options. I really liked the Speedtech Torque Arm and DSE Quadra link, but when Frank told me that the Alston G-Link could be installed under a stock trunk floor that kind of sold it for me. The other main things were packaging. I could re-use my stock width Ricks tank, could get my rear exit tail pipes to work (the G-link seems to have the best tailpipe clearance which was very important for me) and I would re-use my current sway bar and subframe connectors.
Now if the car were in the shell, builder stage I would have probably went with DSE but my car is currently complete, driving etc. I wanted a kit with the least invasive install and best exhaust clearance. And I liked the fact that the triangulated 4-link design is good for road course and drag racing applications vs the other styles.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/11/040401mainpp-1.jpg
I also went with the Moser 12-bolt 33 spline axles, Tru-Trak posi with 3.73's. I have not recieved this yet, just waiting to send Frank the measurements. I considered the wave-trac with 35 spline but Franks says it's overkill.
These are pics of the wheels when I first got them. I originally ordered 6.375" BS on the rears. And when I got them I just wasn't happy, I wanted a deeper lip. So I contacted the Rep Danny Gol and we made a deal to re-hoop the rears to 5.375" BS. This took a few months as well. Fikse is a little slow, but they were very good to deal with and they are local to me now under new ownership.
Anyways, onto some pics.

So the other updates I have going on are some on-going minor problems. The car has been making a rattling noise under acceleration for a little while. I had a buddy go through the car trying to figure it out. He ended up doing the following:
- Installed solid motor mounts. (for some reason my car has trashed 2 sets of poly mounts)
- New poly trans mount
- Fixed some wiring and gauges
- checked the entire exhaust for leaks and tightened everything up
- new header gaskets
- installed a new GM t-stat and did a coolant flush.
While he had the car, he had a tranny shop listen to the noise, well the owner convinced him it was the tranny for sure. So he ended up pulling the Tranny and we had it rebuilt with the Stage II kit from The Gearbox Co: 600-650 hp capacity
http://www.thegearbox.org/catalog/item/3838217/7824166.htm
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/08/T56_Stage_2_kit-1.jpg
Once the Tranny was pulled apart it ended up needed new 5th, 6th and reverse gears and sychros.
I also ended up going with a brand new Spec Stage 3+ Clutch. 900+ ft lbs capacity
All in all, cost me about $2k to rebuild the tranny and clutch. But it now feels very solid, the new clutch engages really nice but the damn noise still persists.

The Fikse's look hot mocked up under the car, very nice.
I noticed you stated that you had solid motor mounts installed with a poly trans. mount, check to make sure with the manufacture that you don't need a solid trans. mount. as well with the solid motor mounts . The reason why I mention this is that I have seen the transmission case crack or bust with solid mounts and a rubber cushion OEM style trans mount on a Pro Street truck back in the early 90's. It was running a SBC w/400 Turbo and it destroyed the case.
I hope this doesn't happen to your ride and I'm not looking for something to pick at, I just thought I'd mention it. Gerald

Thanks Gerald, I was told the opposite. Solid/solid can cause the tranny case to crack.

Gonna look killer man! Thanks for taking the time to stop and take pics of the install. Awesome to see someone taking on the challenge of actually doing a mini-tub and G-Bar install on an otherwise "finished" car. Nice work.
And hey - TTII's might not be the most original wheel out there but I don't care what anyone says, they still have a classic look to them that noone has managed to mimic decently IMHO. Don't get me wrong, love Fikse & Forgeline but I will always like TTII's.

coming along great im on your heels doing my tubs what did you use to finish off the truck is it that zylotone stuff? of? one more? did you order rear end than fiqure out wheel spacing or did you get what ever backspacing you liked than ordered rear end width from frank?
john p.s. are you going to weld in the g bar bracket might be a good idea

Nice wheel choice. You are going to love the G-bar setup it hooks up nicely. Wish I woulda mini tubbed prepaint. Not as easy to do on a vert after paint. I agree the polished wheels look better with your paint scheme, it's all about the BLING..

I'm not sure what brand type of paint it is, I'll have to check with the shop. I'm sure it's just a generic splatter paint. Am looking for an OEM look in the trunk.
Wheels and backspace were ordered first, mocked them up in the car and then ordered the rear-end from Frank.
G-Link brackets are welded according to the shop.

Yes they are never done, mine is in Florida now getting a DSE front subframe and some other upgrades. Frank advised strongly against me doing mini tubs, unless I wanted to possibly repaint. So not anytime soon. Maybe in a couple of years I will send it down to freshen up the paint and get the mini's done then.
I always liked your car cause it was one of the few candy red I could find when I was doing mine candy. Still love that color on a first gen, especially with ghosting.
I was thinking about some engine upgrades but they are kinda pointless without some more grip out back, so I will do that when I do the tubs.
Rybar
12-11-2010, 01:22 PM
Yes, sounds like a plan. Engine upgrades and mini-tubs. Why would you have to repaint if doing the tubs? Should only be the underside and trunk needing paint??

Well here it is, everything is back together. Had a few minor hiccups. Moser Rear end got delayed in shipping, Baer brakes e-brake cable caused some problems and the exhaust was a bit of work to fit but they got it to work with my stock width Ricks tank (unmodified) and kept my tailpipes exiting like I wanted. Also they figured how to re-use my rear sway bar. Should have the car back next week.
Back end needs to settle and then we'll lower the ride height to get a better stance. And the Fikse center caps on the front don't fit. Need to get some raised ones to clear my spindle/rotor dust covers.
Also wanted to mention the shop that did the work. Radical Rides in Surrey, BC, Canada. Owner Bill gave me some great service, great price and really great customer service. And did the work in a very timely fashion. Had the rear end not been delayed I would have had the car done a few weeks ago. I'm definately going to recommend them and take my car back for some future mods. http://www.radicalrides.ca/main/
Bill also figured my rattling noise problem, the tranny shifter was tapping the trans tunnel shifter hole. It was clearanced a bit and shop owner Bill says it's gone. Real happy about that!
I'll get some better pics up when I have it back.

Thanks Mike, yup good old Burnaby. Your in Chilliwack I assume?
Future plans are this, aftermarket subframe and 10" wide fronts with 275 rubber. And a carbon copy of Steve Rupps RHS 460 LS motor. But these aren't going to happen anytime soon. Going to run the car as is for now.
We should meet up, there is a local gathering in about 1 month that myself and a few other guys are going to. It's a cruise to Spanish Banks and possibly Langley as well. Some very nice rides usually come out.

Didn't know you were in Kamloops, I'm not up there very often. PM me if you ever come down.
Looks good.
Joe
Thanks Joe.
Ryan, beuatiful car, just got better. Please post up how the g-bar feels in comparison to the leaf springs. I'm trying to decide on a triang. 4 bar or torque arm suspension for my 69.
Thanks Erik and will do.
Looking good! Nice meat in the back :smoke:
Thanks Ed, your project thread was real helpful to visualize the install with the similar G-bar setup.

Well Bill adjusted the height, says this is as low as it can go without the suspension binding. The springs still need to settle. They are 175 lb springs. Have to say I'm a little disappointed, I wanted the rear to sit lower than this but hoping once it settles it will? Any ideas or thoughts are welcome.

I think it is tough to judge on such a closeup. A more distant profile shot would help. I like the touch of rake your car had in the picture you still have in your sig line, that's the sort of stance I hope to achieve.
I'm looking forward to some more pics.

I just spoke to Bill. He's going to rebuild the upper shock cross member to raise the shock and lower the car more. I'm picky about the stance. This kind of sucks had I known I would have gone with the DSE kit but at least it will get the car sitting where I want it.

Nice upgrades Rybar, and the car looks awesome. I know how it feels, it is really disappointing when things turn out not the way you want especially when it comes to the stance. I wonder how the stance in other camaros built by Prodigy Customs turned out nice with their G-Link.

The ride height deal is a bit weird with the G-Link. I just mocked my rear up in my 69 to weld brackets on/etc. Was a little surprised to see that it won't go super low, and the rear cover actually will end up hitting the shock cross-member.
I think mine will be OK for my tastes when done, but I do wonder how some of the other G-Link equipped cars are so low.

Joe and Jim, thanks for the replies. Joe I think your 69 looks Killer.
So Bill ended up installing a shorter spring. Car is sitting alot lower now and the only problem he can see is the top of the diff pumpkin hitting the trunk floor as I have about 1.5" of travel. The new springs are 200 lb.
Sorry for the crappy pic:

Yes, Bill installed a shorter spring and moved the shock position. He drove the car yesterday and said it drove well. No problems. I should have it back Monday I will post up my thoughts.

Amazing looking car. I hope my 69 looks that good soon. this winter im going to start on the suspension and with all the diff options its hard to really know what to go with. I decided i think maybe to go with the g bar or air bar just for easy of installation. Does the quadralink allow the car to sit lower or offer more clearance for exhaust. And then i thought ill just at air rides air springs in to get the car to sit low when its parked but im afraid that the car at driving height will sit way to high. I really dont know which to go with.

Thanks man, I couldn't tell you what has the best exhaust clearance. I studied many photos online before I made a decision and I figured the G-link had some decent clearance since it doesn't use a panhard bar. But the upper links do cause clearance issues. I think most of the 4 links will require custom tailpipe routing. The DSE Quadralink may require the tank to have the 45 degree cutouts on each corner at the front like you see most of them. Airbar will let you slam the car low when parked but not sure how low you can run it when driving.

Not really an update of my car but cool none the less, this past weekend was a pretty large local car show and the evening before alot of guys cruise their cars. So I got together some gearhead buddies of mine and went for a cruise. Sorry for the crappy pics, it was dark when I took these. But met up with some cool rides I thought I would share. One is a 66 or 67 Chevelle with a Roadster Shop chassis, Asanti wheels and a Magnacharged LS3 and his brother just built an LS9 powered 69 Camaro. It's sporting AME front and rear clips and Forgeline 19" fronts and 20"x12" rears. The other cars are friends of mine, the Viper is my buddies it's running headers and full exhaust and the Jetstream Blue '08 Z06 is another friend of mine it has minor mods and 360 Forged wheels (which look sick in person) and then another buddy Alvin whom I met on this site has the super clean original ralley green 69 Z28. He has the orig motor/trans stored away and it's running a built 406 SBC and TKO 5-speed and billet ralleys. Super nice guy. We also cruised with a new 5th gen that's soon to be modded.
Anyways, enjoy the pics:

So far I'm really happy with them. I haven't put a ton of miles on them but I can tell there is a ton more grip than my old 275 BFG's. Very little road noise and like I said have not put too many miles on them to see any wear. From what I remember they price out quite fairly so if they do wear fast I'll just replace with new ones, but can't really see that happening with street use.
I'll take any one of those rides. All of them are awesome.
Thanks man, it was a fun night and we had a few more nice rides lined up to meet that couldn't make it, if everyone had a little more notice it would have happened.
