JMHO, but consider a bit of boldness. All of them are wonderful cars, but it's really hard to distinguish a build of one of those three because so many are out there. Any "off the wall" ideas you have but maybe at first thought seemed a little too "out there"?

What are your plans, goals, and budget?
The Chevelle is my favorite, but it's at a disadvantage in autocross because of its long wheelbase. It does have an advantage of being able to fit the biggest tires in stock sheetmetal. (275/315) Also, you can fit the whole family in it, and enough bags for a weeks vacation in the trunk, although if you're keeping the '66, that may not be as important.
The Camaro has the best geometry in stock form, and can fit pretty good size tires also. The wheelbase is 4" shorter than a Chevelle, better weight balance, and lighter weight. Performance advantage goes to the Camaro for sure.
Nova can't fit much tire, and pretty much requires an aftermarket subframe to get decent handling out of it. It will take more money and time to get the chassis to work than the others. Cool car, and less common so you're not as likely to see others like it.
I can't really decide... I have a '69 Chevelle now, and plan on a 70-73 Camaro for my next build. I like the Chevelle more, but I can be much more competitive in a Camaro.

True - you crack me up! :)
Overall that's a tough decision; they're all cool cars. It all comes down to vision, goals, budget and personal preference. I've always been a Camaro freak, but the Chevelles are so cool and the early Novas are getting alot of play these days. I say screw the poll, build what you want!

IMHO It shouldn't rally matter what everybody else wants you to build Its what you have a need to build. I like what Derek says he makes great point, but its what you want to build that matters. I have a 69 chevelle and its a great build big enough for the family to cruise with and has room for some stout tire (I'm runnin 295/35/20 on back) and a big block fit right in. the nova your a bit limited with the chassis and motor choice. As for the Camaro that's my next build for many of my own reasons but the 70 1/2 RS just does something for me and screams to be built Pro-Tour style. JMHO.

Thanks for the input I am keeping the 66 so the size of the next car is not important I do like the idea that I will get the most performance out of the camaro and I love the 2nd gen camaro and have owned 2 and I like the design and they are great to work on as is the chevelle. My freind has a 66 nova and I have helped him work on it I love the looks of the car but I am not wild about the way it is built and you are right you need a subframe and alot of other mods just to get started. This will be a streetcar/showcar that will be driven I will probably autox but not all the time and just for fun. Leaning towards the camaro just need to find a good roller as far as budget goes I am going to do all the work (except for body and paint) and try to keep it around 50k including the purchase of the car.

OK, I voted 70-73 Camaro, but ONLY if you use a real RS split-bumper front with the proper grille and turn signals (no split-bumpers on the flat grille nose)
Otherwise, my vote is for 68-69 Chevelle.

If you don't go for a Dart with Supra motor, which I'd love to see, do Nova, way too many Camaros out there

I feel like a lucky man because I have 2 of those 3 cars. 70 camaro and 69 Chevelle. Originally I only had the 69 Chevelle and I was going to do a full tilt PT build on it. Now that I have both I am looking at it differant. I am building each car to its strengths. The camaro will be the more aggresive street fighter type build geared towards the track. While the chevelle will be geared more towards being a comfortable street performance family cruiser. My suggestion would be to think about what it is you want to do with the car and choose the car that best fits that ideal.

Build the Nova.
Read Ron Schwarz's $5000 Mustang thread in the Project Updates forum for ideas about framing it and fitting more tire.

Nova! Or be really different and build a 74' GTO, which is basically a rebadged Nova, but then again I'm very partial to Pontiacs. I agree as others have stated, way to many Camaros out there.

I think you have built a Chevelle which is a little "boxier" of a car. Now you should go with a car that has some curves. I would vote for a early second gen F-body from your list there. Particularly if you are going for a better handling platform. The Nova and the Chevelle would both be great choices, just seems like you would be going down a similar path to your Chevelle.

From your list, Camaro
I am considering going protour instead of drag on my 73 apollo, ls 6.0 motor and pedals

I would defiantly build something that you want and not worry too much about what everyone thinks. There is a reason that there are so many first gens and other popular cars out there, allot of people like them.

Considering you have a Chevelle already, I would do an early second gen Camaro. They handle well, look cool, and are ridiculously easy to find parts for.

Try a second gen Firebird.....look better than a Camaro and you can run more tyre.....parts aren't too hard to get.

How about "None of the the Above"!
Why build what everyone else is building???? He/She with the most money wins that contest!
Why not think outside the box with something different. Anybody can build a Nova, F body Camaro/Firebird or a Chevelle!!!!
Look at ole Uncle Billy Howell for inspiration. Look at the media whore he has become over the last 5 years with 2 very different and defintely not main stream Pro-Touring builds. For Bill it's not all about the money but what HE LIKES! This is something you should really consider.
Answer this question. Name a person and their Pro-Touring car/cars they built that were not out and out show cars or were vendor built cars that have received as much print coverage, television coverage and enthusiast interest in the last 5+ years as Bill Howells 2 DIFFERENT CARS? Nobody! People still talk about the GTO and the Charger is recognized EVERYWHERE it goes.
All it takes is a catalog, money and wrench to build a NOVA, Chevelle or a Camaro.
It takes vision, thought and foresight to build a car that's "Outside the Box".
I vote for NONE OF THE ABOVE to be added to your poll!!!!

That's been done way to much also! Another catalog car!
Build something will actually be driven and enjoyed instead of for the money.
ANYBODY ever see any of those Vette builds out drivng/autocrossing other than for a television show test, magazine shoot or a single Goodguys autocross to "qualify" for some award like Street Machine of the Year?

Hi vintage racer I respect your opinion but I am not sure what you are so angry about. First who said I was not going to drive it ? I take my chevelle everywhere and park it anywhere and dont worry about rain or anything else and I will do the same with the next car I build no matter how much or little money I put in. Some people have money and no talent some have talent and no money it does not matter how and why people build there cars it all just hot rodding no matter what name you put on it and it has been since the begining. I think the reason build the more popular cars is becouse they are good looking and offer nice finished products If someone wants to build a one off or different car thats fine to I have a freind building a 63 volvo with an ls2 not my thing but I respect it as a build. My father likes different vehicles we had a driveway full of amc pacers as a kid and now he is into pontiac feiros not my thing but he seams to like things out of the norm. If you dont like the popular cars Im sorry but you dont have to bash them.

Vintage racer one other thing a midyear vette is hardly a catalog car it is probably one of the most sought after, timeless looking cars out there stock or modified IMO

Isn't that all the more reason for building one up and then using it as a real car? I mean, just because you choose to build a car that most others neither drive regularly nor drive hard more than once or twice does not mean that you have to fall into lock-step with their car use philosophy.
It's a real treat to see a nice build - or restoration, for that matter - being driven on the street (during the week especially) or taking runs at autocross. At a static car show, the same cars are . . . just "nice".
Even a "work in progress" being commonly driven > a shiny finished car that you rarely see.
