I am planning on building a 1968 Dodge Charger, I have had all the metal replaced where needed and firewall is now smooth, I am at the point where I have to make some choices 1. Stock K Member or aftermarket, 2. re-build 383 & 727 or 6.1 Hemi..., type of interior ETC.. I know most of this should have been planned out, but the car was supposed to be a buy finnish and sell to make some money for my next project, but I did a trade with the paint and body guy so now the body will be too good to give away....42276

I'd go with an aftermarket k member.... but maybe thats just me. I'm putting an schwartz chassis under my charger.

I think you already know the right answers to your questions or you would not be on this website. Get a new gen Hemi motor for it and go all out on the suspension. Check out my '68 if you want a little bit of direction

If you haven't finished out the floors and trunk yet then a modern chassis graft is a good idea. My '68 is on a 2007 chassis and although it is not a hardcore "PT" car it is a good all around car. There is a large aftermarket for the LX platform. I am just north of you in Torrance CA. Email me if I can help. Here is a photo of the finished graft.

if the budget allows, id go with the aftermarket k member, many benefits. but im torn on the old school vs new powerplant. I am still trying to decide myself whether to go with the 6.1 in my bee. good luck and keep us posted on this build.

I debated the same things with my 70 Cuda and went with a 440 6bbl and all bolt on suspension stuff. It allowed my car to look like a restoration, but drives and handles much better than they ever did stock. That being said, when I drive my 72 Chevelle with the LY6 and TKO 600, I sort of wish I had a modern powerplant in the Cuda also. If you plan to drive the heck out of it, I would ditch the old stuff and embrace the modern stuff.

Good, now just resist the urge to paint it orange with an "01" on the side and it will come out great!

Hang on because it is a fun ride. Looks like a cool project. An ex girlfriend had a one, and I always wanted to do something with it.

Budget?? good question... I was supposed to be able to build the car as I bought it, it was a "new"metal car will 95% of parts to complete project, well it was a bondo bucket, and a lot of the "new" parts are very used and not usable, and this cost me 17K, I have since sold the engine (383) an trans (727) for about 1k and I have just committed to Bouchillion for the whole 6.1+auto trans+++ package "turn key" with RMS alterKtion and Willwood disc on all 4 wheels that is about 24k, and the only other things I have so far are XV subframe connectors, and AAW Hwy 22 wiring set up. I am so deep into this I have had to sell my 68 Camaro 427, 4spd Convert to keep this project going, Oh yea Body work and paint will be about 16k. So lets see 17k for car, 24k drivetrain, $400 wiring, $200 subframe, 16k body & paint. Lets say 58K so far and I have a long way to go... Interior. electric windows, soundproofing, steering colum, Master cyl, steering wheel, and a lot of stuff I don't even know yet... OH YEA, an some labor...
Oh yea, I plan on driving the car a lot, I travel for a living so when I am home I will prob rive it most everyday about 8-10k miles a year

That's a lot of coin.
If it is just a driver and not being used in a competitive environment where the infinite adjustability of coil overs is necessary, you could save about $5k on the Alterkation by going with the XV Level 1 kit instead. This retains the stock t-bars and leafs, but replaces them with rate matched components and high end shocks. But at $59k and counting, 5 grand aint much.

Thanks for the info, I considered the XV level 1, also Hotchkis TVS, but at the end of the day the AlterKtion was my splurge item, and allowed me to use different headsets and get rid of torsion bars., plus power rack, brakes etc, was only about 2K different when all was said and done. I wish I could just put something together and drive it, but it would drive me crazy knowing. It is a sickness....
