      TH400 Speedo Question

My speedo has started cutting out on me. There doesnt appear to be a probem with the gauge, so my guess is that it is the speedo (VSS). It is a two wire speedo. My question is, how hard is the VSS to replace?

      Thanks to all that respond.

I've never met a TH400 with a VSS. All of them I've seen have speedometer cables, a mechanical setup. Can you help a poor, uneducated brother out?

I may be off base also. But I don't see any mechanical cables at all.

OK, so what's feeding your speedometer, a cable or a wire? Because that sure looks like a TH400 to me. I'm not saying it's not a cable, I'm just asking questions. What car is this in? What kind of gauges?

1BAGTO: If your car has its stock trans and speedo, the connection is mechanical. It is a pain but try to remove the cable and put some grease on the inside. Either that or replace the cable. The problem is likely that your cable is binding up since the grease is 40 years old. You can also check the speedo gears in the trans as they are plastic and can have worn.

Cant really help any more than theory as I replaced my speedo with an electronic Autometer and their speed sensor.

      Good luck!

Only one thing, don't use grease (sorry). Use graphite powder. I know because I did it wrong the first time.

But the best idea is replace the speedometer cable. They're still available and after 40 years it's probably due, don't you think?

It is not the stock tranny, and there is no cable. It is a two wire set up with Stewart Warner gauges. The only question that I have is how hard is the sensor to change out? It looks like on small bolt that holds the retaining clip on, but what after that?

      OK, just never seen one.

If it's like my 4L80e there's nothing to it. Pull the bolt, pop it out, pop the new one in, put the bolt back in. It's that simple.
